ASHLEY NUGENT JOINS FERRIS STATE VOLLEYBALL PROGRAM
Prep Hitter From Jackson Inks With FSU For 2007 Campaign
The Ferris State University women’s volleyball program has announced the addition of prep hitter Ashley Nugent (Jackson/Northwest), who has committed to FSU and will join the Bulldogs for the upcoming 2007 fall campaign. The announcement was made by 12th-year Ferris head coach Tia Brandel-Wilhelm.
The 6-0 Nugent tallied 518 kills along with 480 digs during the winter 2006-07 season while leading Jackson's Northwest High School to a 38-12 overall record and a Capital Area Activities Conference (CAAC) Championship.
"Ashley is a powerful and strong hitter, who will immediately supply needed attacking depth to our outside hitter position," Brandel-Wilhelm said. "She will certainly add a great deal to our program based on her strong work ethic and determination to succeed."
Nugent totaled 292 kills and 90 solo blocks for the Mounties as a prep junior in 2005-06. The two-time all-conference pick served as a team captain in her senior year and was chosen as the squad's Most Valuable Player. Nugent's prep volleyball team won a silver division championship at the Ferris State Invitational in 2007.
The daughter of Jerald and Kelly Nugent, Ashley also competed in basketball and softball at the varsity level during her prep career in additon to being on the school's link crew team for two years. She was an all-league basketball pick as a senior and attained conference honorable mention accolades in softball during the 2006 campaign. Nugent played club-level volleyball for the MICA Volleyball Club coached by David Saenz, who also served as her high school coach.
"We're truly excited to add Ashley to our volleyball program at Ferris State," said Brandel-Wilhelm. "She'll be a great addition to the returning players we have coming back along with the other incoming freshmen we've added this year."
Nugent joins middle/outside hitter Susan “Danielle” Hamilton (Galesburg/Galesburg-August) and libero/defensive specialist Lisa Tobiczyk (Marysville) as incoming recruits for the 2007 campaign. Both signed with the Bulldogs during the early signing period last fall.
The Ferris State women’s volleyball squad posted a 21-9 overall record and reached the NCAA-II Tournament for the 14th time in school history this past fall. FSU also posted its eighth 20-win campaign in the last nine years to date while reaching the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Postseason Tournament for the ninth consecutive year.
