KRISTY GILCHRIST NAMED GLIAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Ferris State Middle Hitter Earns Divisional Player Of The Week Honor
Sophomore middle hitter Kristy Gilchrist (Macomb/Anchor Bay) of the 2007 Ferris State women's volleyball team has been selected as the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) North Division Player of the Week after helping lead the Bulldogs to a 2-0 record in this past week's action. The announcement was made Monday (Oct. 15) by the conference office.
In the week's two home conference matches, Gilchrist paced Ferris State with six services aces and registered a team-leading 12 blocks (all block assists) while averaging a squad-high 4.50 points per game. The 6-0 middle hitter produced 15 kills and a team-best 11 block assists as Ferris recorded a 3-2 come-from-behind win over nationally 10th-ranked Hillsdale last Friday (Oct. 12) evening at FSU's Ewigleben Sports Arena in Big Rapids, Mich. She tallied a team second-best tying nine kills and hit .375 to go with a match-high five service aces as the Bulldogs bested Wayne State, 3-0, last Saturday (Oct. 13) for their fourth consecutive victory to date. Gilchrist concluded the two matches averaging 3.00 kills and 1.50 blocks per game while generating a .232 attack percentage.
The weekly conference honor represents the first for Gilchrist, who's the first Bulldog to receive such conference recognition this campaign.
This season in 23 matches, Gilchrist has compiled a team-leading 43 service aces while ranking second in kills (264), blocks (72), and attack percentage (.285). She has also notched season totals of 37 digs, eight eights, and a squad second-best 4.12 points per game average. Gilchrist's 264-kills output this fall represents a personal single-season high, eclipsing her 220 kills a season ago in 30 matches. Gilchrist has 15 double-digit match kill performances to her credit this season.
For her career, Gilchrist is averaging 2.48 kills per game (484 total) while hitting at a .255 clip in 53 matches. She has served 56 aces while garnering 45 digs and 183 total blocks (28 block solos). Gilchrist has averaged 3.31 points per game in 195 career games to date. She was redshirted for the 2005 season which represented her initial year at Ferris State.
Ferris State, which is currently 16-7 overall and sports an 8-4 GLIAC North Division mark, will venture to Michigan's Upper Peninsula this weekend (Oct. 19-21) for three conference matches. The Bulldogs open the three-match road swing this Friday (Oct. 19) against Michigan Tech with opening serve set for 5 p.m. (EDT). FSU then takes on Northern Michigan this Saturday (Oct. 20) at 4 p.m. (EDT) before wrapping up the weekend's action Sunday (Oct. 21) at Lake Superior State in a 1 p.m. (EDT) matchup.
