FERRIS' DANIELLE BAUCHER EARNS GLIAC WEEKLY DISTINCTION
Senior Outside Hitter Picks Up Divisional Player Of The Week Honor
Senior outside hitter Danielle Baucher (Kalamazoo/Mattawan) of the 2006 Ferris State women's volleyball team has been named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) North Division Player of the Week in an announcement made Monday (Sept. 18) by the league office.
Baucher totaled 35 kills, 36 digs, six blocks and two service aces as Ferris split a pair of league road matches this past weekend (Sept. 15-16). She netted a team high 21 kills and had a match-best 20 digs along with six block assists as Ferris recorded a 3-1 triumph over Ashland on Friday (Sept. 15) evening. Her 14 kills in Saturday's (Sept. 16) 3-0 loss at nationally-ranked Findlay represented a team high while her 16 digs in the same outing was a match-best. Baucher averaged 5.00 kills and 5.14 digs per game in the two matches in addition to recording a .274 attack percentage on the weekend.
This week's honor marks the first time in her career Baucher has attained GLIAC Weekly Award laurels. She is the second Bulldog player to receive the honor this campaign as senior middle hitter Karla White (New Baltimore/Anchor Bay) earned the distinction earlier (Sept. 5) this campaign.
This season, Baucher became the 14th player in school history to notch 1,000 career kills and only the sixth Bulldog player ever to record both 1,000 career kills and digs in Ferris’ season-opening home win over St. Joseph’s (Aug. 24). The 5-10 Baucher currently has 1,195 career kills and is 27 shy of tying Alaina Olds’ (1999-02) 10th-place career total of 1,222 kills at FSU. Her 1,346 career digs presently is 22 away from matching Kathy O’Connor’s (1990-93) fourth-place mark of 1,368 digs on Ferris’ career leaders list. She ranks as Ferris' overall kills (4.19 kpg) leader this season along with second in digs (3.51 dpg).
The 5-10 Baucher, who was a first-team All-GLIAC honoree last season, registered at least 10 kills and 10 digs in 18 of her last 21 outings during the 2005 campaign. She totaled a team-high 408 kills along with 452 digs last campaign en route to receiving Daktronics Second-Team and AVCA Honorable Mention All-Great Lakes Region accolades. Baucher guided Ferris State to the school's 13th overall NCAA Division II Tournament appearance and a 22-10 overall record last year.
Ferris State is currently 10-3 overall and 2-2 in GLIAC action this season. FSU's 9-1 overall start this year through 10 outings represented the school's best season opening performance since beginning the 2000 campaign with a school-record 10 consecutive wins.
The Bulldogs are currently midst a five-match league road swing. Ferris will venture to Michigan's Upper Peninsula for three league road outings this weekend (Sept. 21-24) starting with Thursday's (Sept. 21) 7 p.m. (EDT) tilt at Lake Superior State in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.
