FERRIS STATE'S KARLA WHITE CLAIMS GLIAC WEEKLY HONOR
Junior Middle Hitter Hitter Earns North Division Player Of The Week Kudos
Junior middle hitter Karla White (New Baltimore/Anchor Bay) of the 2005 Ferris State women's volleyball team has been named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) North Division Player of the Week in an announcement made today (Aug. 31) by the league office.
White led Ferris State to a perfect 5-0 mark last weekend as she totaled 57 kills, 32 total blocks and six service aces while registering a .286 attack percentage. The 6-0 White netted a personal career-high 20 kills and had nine block assists in Ferris' 3-2 triumph Friday (Aug. 26) over 24th-ranked Lock Haven (Pa.) in the FSU Holiday Inn Invitational held at Ferris' Ewigleben Sports Arena in Big Rapids, Mich. She also chipped in 15 kills and 14 total blocks in the Bulldogs' 3-2 home invitational victory Saturday (Aug. 27) against Wheeling Jesuit (W.Va.). White averaged 2.85 kills and 1.60 blocks per game in the five-match stretch while being named to the nine-member FSU Holiday Inn Invitational All-Tournament Team.
White compiled 263 kills, 112 total blocks and 14 service aces in 30 matches in 2004 as the Bulldogs claimed their ninth GLIAC Championship and advanced to the NCAA-II Tournament for the 12th time in school history before concluding the year with a 25-7 overall record. She ranked third among the squad’s kills leaders and placed second in blocks while recording GLIAC All-Academic Team honors. White was also a co-recipient of Ferris State's 2004 Coaches Award.
The Bulldogs defeated West Virginia State last Thursday (Aug. 25) in their 2005 season opener at home and then won four consecutive matches in the annual FSU Holiday Inn Invitational held Friday and Saturday (Aug. 26-27). FSU was the only school of 10 teams participating in the event to finish with an unblemished record.
Ferris State, which was ranked 17th in the 2005 CSTV/American Volleyball Coaches Association Division II National Poll, will take part in the Amerihost-Grand Valley State Fall Classic this Friday and Saturday, Sept. 2-3, in Allendale, Mich. The Bulldogs will face non-conference foes Wheeling Jesuit (W.Va.), Minnesota-Duluth, Central Washington and Arkansas Tech in the event.
