Tianna Kirkland Garners All-America Honors At National Meet

Tianna KirklandSenior Tianna Kirkland of the Ferris State University women's outdoor track and field team registered two All-America performances this past weekend (May 23-25) at the 21st annual NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships held at Angelo State University's Multipurpose Sports Complex in San Angelo, Texas.

Kirkland broke two school records en route to a pair of top eight finishes. On Friday (May 24), Kirkland finished sixth overall in the discus with a school-record toss of 153-7. She added a fifth-place shot put finish (47-0.25) in Saturday's (May 25) competition while bettering her own school record. A third-team 2000-01 Women's Basketball Bulletin All-America performer, Kirkland became the school's first female two-sport All-America athlete with a fourth-place (46-11) shot put finish at the 2002 NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships (March 8-9) held in the Reggie Lewis Center at Boston, Mass.

Two other FSU athletes also took part in the national meet. Senior Katie Chapman finished fifth overall (2:12.43) in the third heat of the women's 800-meter dash preliminary round on Friday while senior Morgan Buckner was sixth overall (14.49) in the second heat of the 100-meter hurdle preliminary competition on Friday. Both athletes failed to reach the final round of their respective events.

The Bulldogs tallied seven total points at the national meet under sixth-year head coach Jeff Kavalunas.

THREE FERRIS STATE TRACK ATHLETES ADVANCE TO NATIONALS

Senior Trio Slated To Compete At 2002 NCAA-II Outdoor Championships

Three current Ferris State University women’s outdoor track and field athletes have been selected to compete in the 21st annual NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships (May 23-25) at Angelo State University’s Multipurpose Sports Complex in San Angelo, Texas.

Seniors Morgan Buckner, Katie Chapman and Tianna Kirkland were among the final championship meet entries announced today (May 15) by the NCAA Division II Men’s and Women’s Track and Field Committee. A total of 620 student-athletes qualified for the meet by reaching the automatic and provisional standards established for each event.

An 800-meter run qualifier, Chapman has recorded the fourth fastest time (2:08.63) of 23 competitors entering the 8:25 p.m. (EDT) preliminary round (Friday, May 24). A 2001 NCAA Division II Indoor and Outdoor All-America (800 meters) selection, Chapman reached the provisional qualification mark with a first-place finish at the 2002 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Outdoor Track and Field Championships (May 3-4) held at Northwood University’s Fisher Track in Midland, Mich. She placed third overall (2:09.30) in the event while recording the program’s highest all-time individual finish at the 2002 NCAA-II Indoor Track and Field Championships (March 8-9) in the Reggie Lewis Center at Boston, Mass. The 800-meter run finals are slated for Saturday, May 25, at 8:40 p.m. (EDT).

Buckner, Ferris’ 2001-02 Helen Bennett Award (outstanding female athlete) recipient, clocked the nation’s 15th-best 100-meter hurdle time (14.48) en route to a first place school-record showing at the GLIAC meet. Eighteen athletes will take part in next Friday’s 6:55 p.m. (EDT) preliminary race with the semifinal round scheduled for 8:55 p.m. (EDT). The final round is next Saturday at 7:40 p.m. (EDT). A second-team 2001 Arthur Ashe Jr. Track and Field Sports Scholar, Buckner earned 2002 NCAA Division II Indoor All-America recognition with an eighth-place (8.86) 60-meter hurdle performance.

One of 17 competitors in both the shot put and discus, Kirkland holds the sixth-best overall shot put toss (46-11) heading into next Saturday’s 6:30 p.m. (EDT) final-round event. Her top seasonal performance (46-11), which came in a first-place Ferris State Bulldog Invitational (April 6) finish, broke her previous school mark of 46-1 set during the 2000 campaign. Kirkland presently ranks 13th overall (149-8) entering next Friday’s 6 p.m. (EDT) discus competition. She placed third in the discus (149-8) and fourth in the shot put (45-11) at the GLIAC’s outdoor meet. A third-team 2000-01 Women’s Basketball Bulletin All-America performer, Kirkland became the school’s first female two-sport All-America athlete with a fourth-place (46-11) shot put finish at this season’s indoor national championships.

Ferris State, under sixth-year head coach Jeff Kavalunas, placed third (123 points) of nine teams at the 2002 GLIAC Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships and recorded the program’s top national meet finish (15th place - 12 points) at the 2002 NCAA-II Indoor Track and Field Championships.

FSU Records Two Top Five Finishes At Final Regular Season Meet

The Ferris State University men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams registered two top five finishes at the University of Michigan’s Len Paddock Invitational held this past weekend (May 10-11) at Ferry Field in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Junior Jennifer Brogger placed fourth overall (128-1) in the women's javelin to lead FSU, which had only six athletes compete in the outdoor season’s final regular season meet. Junior Adrianne Desenzio tied for 12th place in the pole vault (11-0), senior Katie Chapman placed 12th in the 400-meter dash (58.07) and senior Tianna Kirkland finished 15th overall in the hammer throw (137-1) for the Bulldog women.

In the men’s competition, senior Eric Hincka was fifth in the javelin (152-0) and senior Jason Thompson placed eighth in the long jump (22-6).

Five Bulldog athletes have reached provisional qualification marks for the 2002 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships, which will be held May 23-25 at Angelo State University in San Angelo, Texas. The list includes sophomore Jennifer Delamater in the 200-meter dash, Chapman in both the 800 and 1,500-meter runs and senior Morgan Buckner in the 100-meter hurdles. Brogger has reached the provisional javelin mark while Kirkland has provisionally qualified in the shot put, discus and hammer throws. The final meet participation list will be released this Tuesday (May 14) by the NCAA.

Four Bulldog Athletes Claim League Titles At GLIAC Championships

The Ferris State University women’s outdoor track and field team registered 22 top eight finishes and had four individual champions at the 2002 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Outdoor Track and Field Championships held this past weekend (May 3-4) at Northwood University’s Fisher Track in Midland, Mich.

The Bulldog women totaled 123 points en route to a third place team finish. Grand Valley State claimed the women’s title with 238 points while Ashland placed second (165 points).

Senior Katie Chapman broke the GLIAC’s outdoor 800-meter run record while recording a first place time of 2:08.63. Senior Morgan Buckner, the league’s defending 100-meter hurdle champion, was a repeat winner as she clocked a school-record and national provisional time (14.48). Buckner also earned all-conference honors with a third place (5-4) high jump finish. Ferris had nine overall women’s all-league (top three) performances.

Junior Adrianne Desenzio won the women’s pole vault (10-10) and also placed fourth in the triple jump (34-10) and seventh in the long jump (17-0.50). FSU’s other individual champion was freshman Atesha Olds, who won the javelin (125-1) while recording the school’s third-best all-time outdoor toss. Olds also finished sixth in the discus (132-0).

Senior Tianna Kirkland finished among the top four in three events. She was third in the discus (149-9), fourth in the shot put (45-11) and fourth in the hammer throw (157-6). Junior Jennifer Brogger earned runner-up honors in the javelin (122-10) as the Bulldog women scored 37 points in the women’s weight events.

Sophomore Jennifer Delamater was second with a school-record time in the 200-meter dash (24.85), fourth in the 100-meter dash (12.48) and fifth in the long jump (17-4.50). Senior Michelle Terry was sixth in the 1,500-meter run (4:44.50), freshman Sarah Duesing tied for fourth place in the high jump (5-2) and senior April Smith placed sixth in the 10,000-meter run (39:39.84) with FSU’s fifth-best all-time outdoor performance. Sophomore Molly Machinski was seventh in both the 100-meter hurdles (15.55) and the 400-meter hurdles (1:07.07). The Bulldogs also finished second in the women’s 4x100-meter relay (48.46) and were fourth in the 4x400-meter relay (3:56.21).

Ferris State will take part in the University of Michigan’s Len Paddock Invitational next weekend (May 10-11) in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Bulldog Women Tie For Team Title At USTCA Quadrangular

The Ferris State University women’s outdoor track and field team recorded 11 first-place finishes at the United States Track Coaches Association (USTCA) Quadrangular held Saturday at FSU’s Top Taggart Field in Big Rapids, Mich.

The Bulldog women totaled 200 points while sharing the team championship with Saginaw Valley State. Alma placed third with 104 points while Aquinas finished fourth overall (84 points).

Senior Tianna Kirkland won three individual events to lead FSU. She won the shot put (45-10), discus (149-4) and hammer throw (149-5) while registering the school’s third-best all-time outdoor discus mark and fourth-best all-time hammer throw performance. Senior Morgan Buckner was a double winner for Ferris State in the 100-meter hurdles (14.4) and the high jump (5-2).

Senior Katie Chapman claimed the 400-meter dash (58.89), sophomore Jennifer Delamater won the 200-meter dash (25.69) and freshman Stefanie DeLong took the 3,000-meter run championship (11:16.92) as the Bulldog women recorded 18 first or second place finishes.

FSU swept the women’s weight events as junior Jennifer Brogger placed first overall in the javelin (125-7) to go along with Kirkland’s three individual wins. Freshman Emily Kooiker won the pole vault (8-10) as FSU captured six of the eight women’s field events. The Bulldogs also won the women’s 4x100-meter relay (49.62).

Junior Adrianne Desenzio finished second in the triple jump (33-3.75), junior Jessica Berube was second in the 400-meter hurdles (1:08.02) and sophomore Angela Herzog took runner-up honors in the 400-meter run (1:00.58). Freshman Atesha Olds recorded a second-place discus toss (126-2), senior April Smith was second overall in the 5,000-meter run (19:22.56) and freshman Sharon Smith placed second in the 100-meter dash (13.63). Senior Michelle Terry also finished second in the 800-meter run (2:23.50).

Ferris State will take part in the 2002 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Outdoor Track and Field Championships next weekend (May 3-4) at Northwood University in Midland, Mich.


April 22

Two Bulldog Athletes Reach Provisional Marks at Eastern Michigan Twilight Meet

Senior Tianna Kirkland and junior Jennifer Brogger reached NCAA Division II provisional national qualification marks at the Eastern Michigan Twilight Meet, which was held last Friday (April 19) at EMU's Olds-Marshall Track in Ypsilanti, Mich.

Kirkland recorded the school's third-best all-time outdoor discus mark while meeting the provisional standard with a first-place toss of 148-3. Brogger finished second (133-6) in the javelin while reaching the provisional qualification distance and notching FSU's second-best all-time outdoor performance.

FSU had eight top five finishes. Kirkland took runner-up honors in the shot put (44-11.75), freshman Atesha Olds placed third in the javelin (119-8) and senior Katie Chapman was third overall in the 1,500-meter run (4:38.50). Freshman Sarah Duesing finished in a fourth-place high jump (5-3.75) tie. Chapman recorded Ferris' second-best outdoor 1,500-meter run time while Olds had the school's fourth-best javelin toss.

The Bulldogs placed second in the 4x400-meter relay (3:58.35) and were fourth in the 4x100-meter relay (49.1). Sophomore Angela Herzog recorded a sixth-place 800-meter run finish (2:18.84), sophomore Jennifer Delamater placed seventh in the long jump (16-5.75) and junior Adrianne Desenzio tied for seventh place in the pole vault (10-10). Desenzio had FSU's second-best outdoor pole vault mark while freshman Emily Kooiker recorded the school's fourth-best vault (9-10) en route to a 12th place overall finish.

Ferris State will host the United States Track Coaches Association Quadrangular this Saturday (April 27) at Top Taggart Field in Big Rapids, Mich. The meet is slated to begin at 11 a.m. (EDT).


April 13

Bulldog Athletes Fare Well At SVSU Invitational, Tennessee Sea Ray Relays

Two Ferris State University women’s outdoor track and field athletes claimed individual titles this past Saturday (April 13) at the Saginaw Valley State Collegiate Invitational held at SVSU’s Morley Field in University Center, Mich.

Senior Michelle Terry claimed the 1,500-meter run (4:45.53) title while junior Jennifer Brogger won the javelin (122-3). The Bulldog women recorded 15 top-eight finishes in the non-scoring meet.

In the women’s competition, the Bulldog 4x400-meter relay team finished second (4:10.26), junior Adrianne Desenzio placed third in the triple jump (32-9) and sophomore Molly Machinski was third in the 100-meter hurdles (15.77). Freshman Atesha Olds took third in the discus (120-7), javelin (113-6) and the shot put (37-5) while also recording a fourth-place hammer throw (118-11) finish.

Senior April Smith was fourth in the 10,000-meter run (41:52.5), sophomore Angela Herzog finished fourth in the 800-meter run (2:21.26) and junior Jessica Berube placed fourth overall in the 400-meter hurdles (1:06.92). Freshman Sharon Smith recorded a fourth place finish in the 200-meter dash (27.45).

The Bulldog women’s team also had five athletes compete this past weekend (April 12-13) at the University of Tennessee’s prestigious Sea Ray Relays in Knoxville, Tenn. Freshman Sarah Duesing posted the school’s fourth-best outdoor high jump performance (5-5.75) while finishing in a six-way tie for seventh place.

Senior Tianna Kirkland finished 10th in the shot put (44-7.50), senior Katie Chapman was 17th in the 800-meter run (2:10.87) and senior Morgan Buckner placed 22nd overall in the 100-meter hurdles (14.81). Sophomore Jennifer Delamater clocked 25.33 while finishing 33rd overall in the 200-meter dash.

The Ferris State women’s team will take part in the Eastern Michigan University Twilight next Friday (April 19) at 5 p.m. (EDT) in Ypsilanti, Mich.


April 7

Ferris Sets Two Meet Records At Annual Bulldog Invitational

The Ferris State University women's outdoor track and field team recorded eight first-place finishes, set two meet records and posted three of the school's top five event marks at the annual Bulldog Invitational held this past Saturday (April 6) at Top Taggart Field in Big Rapids, Mich.

In the women’s competition, senior Morgan Buckner won the 100-meter high hurdles in a meet record time (14.95) to lead Ferris State. Buckner also finished in a second-place high jump tie (5-2) behind Ferris freshman Sarah Duesing, who broke the meet record and posted the school's fourth-best all-time outdoor mark (5-4).

Junior Jennifer Brogger won the women's javelin (128-6), senior Katie Chapman claimed the 800-meter dash (2:13.42) and sophomore Jennifer Delamater emerged victorious in the 100-meter dash (12.43). Freshman Stefanie DeLong finished first in the 3,000-meter run (11:19.59) and the Bulldog women won both the 4x100-meter (49.70) and 4x400-meter (4:06.43) relays.

The FSU women also had seven runner-up finishes. Senior Tianna Kirkland bettered her own school mark in the shot put (46-11) en route to a second-place finish. Kirkland also earned runner-up honors in both the discus (141-2) and the hammer throw (142-9). Other second-place finishers for Ferris State included sophomore Jessica Berube in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles (1:08.20), junior Adrianne Desenzio in the triple jump (32-2) and freshman Emily Kooiker in the pole vault (9-0). Kooiker recorded the school's fourth-best all-time outdoor vault performance.

Ferris State will take part in the Saginaw Valley State Invitational next Saturday (April 13) at 11 a.m. (EDT) in University Center, Mich. Selected members will also compete in the University of Tennessee’s prestigious Sea Ray Relays beginning this Thursday (April 11) in Knoxville, Tenn.

Bulldogs Finish Second At Indianapolis Meet

The Ferris State University women's outdoor track and field team finished second overall (102 points) behind meet host Indianapolis this past Saturday (March 30) at the Gerald England Track and Field Invitational at Key Stadium in Indianapolis, Ind.

FSU had five first-place finishes in its first outdoor meet of the year. Senior Katie Chapman placed first overall in the 400-meter dash (57.65), senior Morgan Buckner won the 100-meter hurdles (14.76), freshman Sarah Duesing claimed the high jump title (5-2) and junior Adrianne Desenzio won the pole vault (10-4). FSU also won the women's 4x400-meter relay (4:05.60).

Sophomore Angela Herzog took second-place honors in the 400-meter dash (1:00.62) while senior Tianna Kirkland was second in both the shot put (44-0) and discus (133-10). Kirkland reached the national provisional qualification distance in the shot put. Desenzio added a runner-up triple jump finish while senior Michelle Terry placed second in the 1,500-meter run (4:49.35).

Ferris State will host the annual Bulldog Invitational this Saturday (April 6) at FSU's Top Taggart Field. The meet is slated to start at 10 a.m. (EST).

Seven Athletes Earn GLIAC All-Academic Honors

Seven Ferris State University women's indoor track and field athletes have been named to the 2002 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Women's Indoor Track and Field All-Academic Team. The list includes seniors Morgan Buckner, April Smith and Michelle Terry, juniors Jessica Berube and Adrianne Desenzio and sophomores Molly Machinski and Angela Herzog. Three Bulldog Athletes Earn All-America Honors At National Indoor Meet

Ferris State University women’s indoor track and field seniors Morgan Buckner, Katie Chapman and Tianna Kirkland earned All-America honors by finishing among the top eight performers at the 2002 NCAA Division II National Indoor Track and Field Championships, which were held last weekend (March 8-9) at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston, Mass.

Ferris’ three indoor All-America finishes represents the school’s best national meet performance. The trio compiled 12 points to finish 15th overall in the team standings. North Dakota State won the Division II crown (67.5 points) while St. Augustine’s (N.C.) finished second (45) and Adams State (Colo.) placed third (41).

Chapman recorded FSU’s highest individual national finish ever as she placed third overall in the 800-meter run (2:09.30) while breaking her own school record. She held the seventh-fastest time (2:10.42) of 15 competitors after the preliminary round. Both a 2001 NCAA Division II Indoor and Outdoor All-America (800 meters) selection, Chapman provisionally qualified for the national meet with a fifth-place finish at the Cannon IV Classic (Feb. 8-9) in Indianapolis, Ind.

One of 11 shot put competitors, Kirkland bettered own school mark (46-11) en route to a fourth place overall finish. Entering the national meet, Kirkland held the seventh-best qualifying toss (45-10). That performance, which came in a first-place Cannon IV Classic finish, broke Ferris’ school indoor record previously held by Jody Pavlik (43-0; 1997). Kirkland’s fourth-place finish marks FSU’s first top-eight women’s shot put placing.

Buckner posted the school’s top all-time 60-meter hurdle finish while placing eighth overall (8.86) in the 11-competitor field. In the preliminary round, Buckner recorded the seventh-fastest (8.89) qualifying mark. Her top seasonal performance (8.74) was attained while claiming the individual championship at the 2002 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championships (Feb. 22-23) at Hillsdale College’s Jessie Phillips Arena in Hillsdale, Mich.

Sophomore Jennifer Delamater failed to reach the 60-meter dash final round after placing 12th overall (7.84) of 13 sprinters in the preliminary competition. She held the 12th-fastest 60-meter dash qualifying time (7.70) entering the national meet, which was recorded in a fourth-place finish at the GLIAC Championships.

Ferris State placed third of eight teams at the 2002 GLIAC Women’s Indoor Track and Field Championships (85.5 points). The Bulldogs will open the 2002 outdoor campaign Saturday, March 30, at 11 a.m. (EST) in the Indianapolis Invitational at Indianapolis, Ind.

FSU Garners Four NCAA Division II National Indoor Championship Entries

Four current Ferris State University women’s indoor track and field athletes will compete in the 17th annual NCAA Division II National Indoor Track and Field Championships (March 8-9) at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston, Mass.

Seniors Katie Chapman, Morgan Buckner and Tianna Kirkland, along with sophomore Jennifer Delamater, are among the final championship meet entries announced today.

An 800-meter run qualifier, Chapman has the 12th-fastest seed time (2:13.55) of 15 competitors entering the 7 p.m. (EST) preliminary round (Friday, March 8). Both a 2001 NCAA Division II Indoor and Outdoor All-America (800 meters) selection, Chapman provisionally qualified for the national meet with a fifth-place finish at the Cannon IV Classic (Feb. 8-9) in Indianapolis, Ind. The 800-meter run finals are slated for Saturday, March 9, at 4:20 p.m. (EST).

Buckner clocked the nation’s fifth-best 60-meter hurdle time (8.74) while finishing first at the 2002 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championships held last weekend (Feb. 22-23) at Hillsdale College’s Jessie Phillips Arena in Hillsdale, Mich. Chapman, Buckner Lead FSU To Third Place Finish At GLIAC Championships

Two Ferris State University women's indoor track and field athletes claimed individual titles at the 2002 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Indoor Track and Field Championships held this past weekend (Feb. 22-23) at Hillsdale College's Jessie Phillips Arena in Hillsdale, Mich.

Senior Katie Chapman won the 800-meter dash (2:14.40) and senior Morgan Buckner garnered 55-meter hurdle championship honors (8.17) as the Bulldog women's team finished third in the eight-team meet with 85.5 points. Grand Valley State won the women's division (194 points) while Ashland finished second (117.5 points).

The FSU women set four school indoor records and had five athletes claim all-conference honors by placing in the top three in their respective events. Sophomore Jennifer Delamater placed third overall in both the long jump (17-8.25) and the 200-meter dash (25.26). She also set a school record and posted a provisional NCAA Division II national qualification time (7.17) while finishing fourth in the 55-meter dash.

Senior Tianna Kirkland earned runner-up accolades in the shot put (45-1.25) and placed fourth in the 20-pound weight throw (51-4.50). Kirkland met the provisional qualifying standard in the shot put and recorded Ferris' second-best all-time indoor weight throw performance.

Senior Michelle Terry posted the school's fourth-best performance while finishing fourth and meeting the national provisional mark in the mile run (5:05.14). She finished ninth in the 800-meter run (2:24.22) and teamed up with Chapman, freshman Stefanie DeLong and sophomore Angela Herzog to place sixth and break FSU's indoor 4x800-meter relay record (9:38.96).

Sophomore Adrianne Desenzio was third overall in the pole vault (10-2), fourth in the triple jump (34-7.75) and eighth in the long jump (16-4.25). Besides winning the 55-meter hurdles in a school-record time, Buckner also finished seventh in the high jump (5-1.25), eighth in the 55-meter dash (7.49) and 10th in the long jump (15-3.25).

Freshman Emily Kooiker was fifth in the pole vault (9-8.25), freshman Atesha Olds placed eighth in the shot put (38-5.75) and sophomore Molly Machinski finished fifth in the 55-meter hurdles (8.73). Herzog clocked 2:21.37 while placing eighth in the 800-meter dash and FSU's 4x400-meter relay squad took sixth place (4:08.58).

Five Ferris State women's athletes have reached provisional qualification marks for the NCAA Division II National Indoor Track and Field Championships, which will be held March 8-9 at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston, Mass.

Michelle Terry Records First-Place Finish at Central Michigan's Jack Skoog Open

Three Ferris State University women's indoor track and field athletes reached NCAA Division II provisional national qualification marks at Central Michigan University's Jack Skoog Open, which was held this past Friday (Feb. 15) night in Mount Pleasant, Mich.

Senior Michelle Terry claimed FSU's lone first-place finish as she won the 800-meter dash (2:16.73) in a provisional qualification time. Senior Tianna Kirkland reached the provisional shot put mark with a third-place toss (45-8.50) while senior Morgan Buckner posted a personal-best effort (8.87) en route to a second-place overall finish and a national provisional time in the 60-meter hurdles.

The Bulldog women's squad had 11 top six finishes. Senior Katie Chapman finished fourth overall in the 400-meter dash (58.93) and was sixth in the 200-meter dash (28.10). Sophomore Jennifer Delamater placed fourth in the 60-meter dash (7.96) and took sixth in the long jump (17-7.50).

Senior April Smith was fifth overall in the 3,000-meter run (11:07.61), junior Adrianne Desenzio garnered fifth-place triple jump honors (33-8.75) and the FSU women's 4x400-meter relay team placed third (4:07.12). Kirkland added a fourth-place 20-pound weight throw finish (49-9).

The Ferris State University women's indoor track and field team will take part in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Indoor Track and Field Championships next weekend (Feb. 22-23) at Hillsdale College in Hillsdale, Mich.

Chapman Reaches Provisional Qualification Mark at Cannon IV Classic
TWO BULLDOG ATHLETES BREAK SCHOOL INDOOR RECORDS


Two Ferris State University women's indoor track and field athletes broke school records at the Cannon IV Classic, which was held Feb. 8-9 at the National Institute for Fitness and Sport (NIFS) in Indianapolis, Ind.

Senior Tianna Kirkland claimed the women's shot put championship and broke the school's indoor record with a toss of 45-10. She also placed seventh in the 20-pound weight throw (48-3) while posting FSU's third-best all-time indoor mark.

Sophomore Jennifer Delamater set a new school mark with a 16th-place finish in the 200-meter dash (25.53). She was 13th overall in the long jump (16-9.75).

Senior Katie Chapman, a returning 2000-01 NCAA Division II Indoor All-America (800 meters) honoree, provisionally qualified for the 2002 NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships (March 8-9 - Boston, Mass.) as she clocked 2:13.43 while placing fifth overall in the 800-meter dash.

Senior Morgan Buckner was 10th in the 60-meter hurdles (8.96) as the Bulldog women had five top 15 finishes.

Ferris State also had athletes compete at the Mike Lints Laker Challenge held Feb. 8 at the Grand Valley State University Fieldhouse in Allendale, Mich. Junior Adrianne Desenzio claimed the women's triple jump title (33-6), placed third overall in the pole vault (10-0) and finished seventh in the long jump (16-5.50) to lead the Bulldogs at the Laker Challenge.

Freshman Stefanie DeLong clocked 2:25.10 to earn runner-up 800-meter run honors. Junior Jessica Berube placed sixth in the 400-meter dash (1:03.24), sophomore Molly Machinski finished fourth in the 55-meter low hurdles (8.80) and freshman Atesha Olds was eighth in the weight throw (42-4).

Ferris State will return to action next Friday (Feb. 15) at Central Michigan University's Jack Skoog Open in Mount Pleasant, Mich. The meet is slated to begin at 5 p.m. (EST).

Buckner, Kirkland Reach Provisional Marks at GLIAC/GLVC Division II Challenge

Two Ferris State University women's indoor track and field athletes posted provisional 2002 NCAA Division II National Indoor Track and Field Championship qualification marks at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC)/Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) Division II Challenge held Feb. 1 at the University of Findlay's Malcolm Athletic Center in Findlay, Ohio.

Seniors Morgan Buckner and Tianna Kirkland led the Bulldog women's team as both provisionally qualified for the national indoor meet (March 8-9) to be held at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston, Mass. Buckner won the 60-meter hurdles (8.96) while Kirkland placed second overall with a school-record shot put toss (45-4 ½). Buckner also finished sixth in the 60-meter dash (8.20) and eighth in the high jump (5-1 ¼). Kirkland added a fifth-place (45-9) 20-pound weight throw finish.

Sophomore Jennifer Delamater was fourth in the long jump (17-4), junior Adrianne Desenzio finished fourth in the pole vault (9-2 ¼) and senior Katie Chapman clocked 2:18.47 to place fourth in the 800-meter dash. Delamater also took fifth place in the 60-meter dash (7.93) while Desenzio leaped 31-7 ½ to finish seventh in the triple jump.

The Bulldogs' 4x400-meter relay team placed fifth overall (4:10.13) while freshman Atesha Olds was sixth in the shot put (39-7) and senior Michelle Terry was seventh in the mile run (5:13.23). Sophomore Molly Machinski clocked 9.96 to place seventh in the 60-meter hurdles while sophomore Angela Herzog was eighth in the 400-meter dash (2:21.18). FSU will return to action this weekend (Feb. 8-9) at the Cannon IV Classic in Indianapolis, Ind.

Three Bulldogs Earn Four Individual Championships at SVSU Collegiate Open

The Ferris State University women's indoor track and field team claimed four first-place finishes at the Saginaw Valley State University Collegiate Open held Friday (Jan. 18) evening at SVSU's Ryder Center in University Center, Mich.

Sophomore Jennifer Delamater claimed both the 60-meter dash championship (7.91) and the 200-meter dash title (26.23) to lead the Bulldog women. She also placed fifth in the long jump (17-2).

Senior Morgan Buckner garnered 60-meter low hurdle championship honors (9.05) and was seventh overall in the long jump (16-3 ¼). The other first-place finisher for the Bulldog women was senior Michelle Terry, who clocked 2:18.75 while winning the 800-meter race. Terry also claimed a third-place finish in the 3,000-meter run (10:51.99).

In the women's weight events, senior Tianna Kirkland placed second in both the 20-pound weight throw (46-6) and the shot put (44-7 ½). Freshman thrower Atesha Olds finished fourth overall in the shot put (37-11 ½) and was fifth in the weight throw with FSU's fifth-best all-time indoor mark (41-3).

FSU was second in the women's 4x400-meter relay (4:12.30) and freshman Emily Kooiker placed fourth overall in the pole vault with FSU's fourth-best all-time indoor vault performance (9-6).

Three other Ferris State women's athletes also finished among the top six performers in their respective events. Sophomore Molly Machinski was fourth in the 60-meter dash (8.52) and fifth in the 60-meter hurdles (9.79). Junior Adrianne Desenzio finished sixth in both the long jump (16-7 ½) and the triple jump (31-8 ¾) while freshman Stefanie DeLong clocked 5:28.36 to place fifth in the mile run.

Ferris State will return to action Friday, Feb. 1, as the Bulldogs take part in the Great Lakes Invitational at the University of Findlay in Findlay, Ohio.

Bulldogs Record Eight First-Place Finishes at Grand Valley

The Ferris State University women's indoor track and field team claimed eight first-place finishes in a dual meet loss Friday (Jan. 11) evening at Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Mich.

The host Lakers won eight events and had nine runner-up finishes en route to a 74.5-60.5 victory over FSU at the GVSU Fieldhouse.

Junior Adrianne Desenzio won both the pole vault (10-0) and triple jump (35-0) to lead the Bulldog women's team. She also picked up a third-place long jump finish (17-3 ½).

Sophomore Jennifer Delamater claimed the 55-meter dash championship (7.27) and finished second in both the 200-meter dash (25.54) and the long jump (18-0 ¼). She posted FSU's fourth-best all-time indoor long jump mark while attaining runner-up accolades.

Senior Morgan Buckner garnered 55-meter low hurdle championship honors (8.50) and was second overall in the high jump (5-2). Other first-place finishes for the Bulldog women included sophomore Angela Herzog, who won the 800-meter race (2:24.24), and senior Michelle Terry, who clocked 5:21.01 while winning the mile run.

In the women's weight events, senior Tianna Kirkland placed second while posting the school's fourth-best indoor 20-pound weight throw mark (46-7) and claimed the shot put title (44-0). Freshman thrower Atesha Olds finished second in the shot put (39-1). FSU won the women's 4 x 800-meter relay (10:00.27) and was second in the 4 x 400-meter relay (4:16.57). Freshman Emily Kooiker was fourth overall in the pole vault with FSU's fourth-best all-time indoor performance (9-0).

Ferris State will return to action next Friday (Jan. 18) in the Saginaw Valley State Indoor Invitational at SVSU's Ryder Center. The meet is slated to begin at 5 p.m. (EST).

The Ferris State University women's indoor track and field team recorded two first-place finishes in the 2001-02 season-opening Saginaw Valley State University Holiday Open held Friday (Dec. 7) evening at the Ryder Center in Saginaw, Mich.

Sophomore Jennifer Delamater won the 60-meter dash (7.77) for the Bulldog women's squad while senior Morgan Buckner placed first in the high jump (5-2).

The Bulldog women also had success in the weight events. Senior thrower Tianna Kirkland was second in the women's shot put (45-3 ½) and seventh in the 20-pound weight throw (41-10 ½). Kirkland set a new school record in the shot put and posted the fourth-best indoor 20-pound weight throw mark in school history. Freshman Atesha Olds placed eighth in the 20-pound toss (39-11 ½).

Senior Michelle Terry clocked 5:18.87 to earn runner-up honors in the women's mile run while senior Katie Chapman finished third in the 400-meter dash (1:00.54).

In the women's pole vault, juniors Kristyn Buck and Adrianne Desenzio tied for third place (9-0) while newcomer Emily Kooiker placed seventh (9-0) with the school's fourth-best all-time indoor vault performance. Desenzio also finished fourth in the triple jump (31-10).

Sophomore Molly Machinski placed seventh overall in the 200-meter dash (28.29) and sixth in the 60-meter hurdles (9.55). Buckner was second in the 60-meter hurdles (9.00) and seventh in the long jump (16-5 ¾). Sophomore Angela Herzog finished seventh overall in the 400-meter race (1:03.64) and the Bulldogs placed second in the women's 1,600-meter relay (4:11.82).

The next competition for the FSU women's team is a dual at Grand Valley State University slated for Jan. 11, 2002, in Allendale, Mich.
