1999 Notes

Outdoor Season

May 27

The Ferris State University women's outdoor track and field team placed eighth in the final 1999 United States Track Coaches Association's NCAA Division II Dual Meet Rankings.

Ferris, under third-year head coach Jeff Kavalunas, totaled 187.20 points in the national rankings while North Dakota State was the nation's top-ranked team with 244.84 points. Besides Ferris, other teams ranked from the GLIAC Conference were Hillsdale College (7th) and Saginaw Valley (26th). The ranking's criteria is based on each team's top two performances per event.

May 10

Ferris finished in fourth place at the 1999 GLIAC Outdoor Championships on May 7. . .Junior Jamie Sollose was FSU's top individual place-winner with a second place finish in the long jump (17-10). . .Taking third places and setting school records in their respective events were junior Melissa Braxton (36-6.5 – triple jump) and sophomore Farrah Sewell (155-4 – hammerthrow).

April 26

The Bulldogs ran at the Hillsdale Relays last weekend. . .FSU's top finishes were a pair of thirds, one by sophomore Farrah Sewell in the hammerthrow (151-5) and the other by freshman Richelle Robinson in the 200 meters (25.54). . .Ferris is ranked sixth in the NCAA Division II Team Dual Meet rankings with 181.30 points.

April 19

The Bulldogs competed at the Saginaw Valley Invitational last Saturday. . .Junior Jamie Sollose won the triple jump (33-9) and placed second in the long jump (16-7).

April 12

Ferris hosted the Bulldog Invitational last Saturday at renovated Top Taggart Field, marking the first intercollegiate track meet at FSU in 12 years. . .Sophomore Farrah Sewell became a provisional qualifier for the NCAA Division II Championships with a school-record toss of 154-4 in the hammerthrow. . .Sophomore Jill Newberry broke the school record in the pole vault with a leap of 7-6.

April 5

The Bulldogs competed in the Northwest Ohio Track Classic hosted by Bowling Green last weekend. . .Junior Keisha Jones was FSU's top finisher, placing third in the 400 at 55.90. . .On April 10, Ferris will host the Bulldog Invitational starting at 10:30 a.m. at renovated Top Taggart Field. It will be the first home track meet at Ferris in 12 years. . .The last time the Bulldogs had a home meet was May 1, 1987, when FSU hosted the GLIAC men's and women's outdoor championships.

Indoor Season

March 8

Junior Kiesha Jones and sophomore Farrah Sewell each recorded a ninth place finish in their respective events at the NCAA Division II Women's Indoor Track and Field Championships, March 5-6, at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis.

Jones was ninth in the country after breaking her own school record with a time of 56.58 in the 400 meters. Sewell was ninth in the 20-pound weight throw with a toss of 49-7.25.

March 4

Junior Kiesha Jones and sophomore Farrah Sewell have officially qualified for the NCAA Division II Women's Indoor Track and Field Championships, March 5-6, at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis.

The pair received invitations to the nationals as a result of meeting national provisional qualifying performances in their events. Jones qualified in the 400 meters following her school-record time of 57.14 at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships. Sewell qualified in the 20-pound weight throw with her school-record distance of 53-1 at the Grand Valley Quadrangular.

February 22

Ferris took third place at the 1999 GLIAC Women's Indoor Track and Field Championships, Feb. 20 in Findlay, Ohio. Junior Kiesha Jones was conference champion in the 400 meters with a school-record time of 57.14. Head coach Jeff Kavalunas was named GLIAC Women's Indoor "Coach of the Year" for the second consecutive season.

Ferris compiled 90.5 team points to finish behind Hillsdale (122) and Ashland (119) at the GLIAC Indoor Championships. Eleven different Bulldogs placed in at least one event, including sophomore Farrah Sewell, who was second in the 20-lb. weight throw (50-6), and freshman Jakisha Sharps, who took second in the 55-meter dash (7.41). Junior Melissa Braxton was third in both the 55-meter hurdles (8.87) and triple jump (35-10.5).

Junior Jamie Sollose was third in the long jump (17-8) and fourth in the triple jump (35-7.25), while sophomore Jill Newberry was third in the pole vault (8-0), fourth in the 55-meter hurdles (8.88) and sixth in the high jump (4-11). Freshman April Smith was fourth in the 5,000 meters (18:50.81), freshman Richelle Robinson was sixth in the 200 meters (26.94), junior Sara Watson was sixth in the 800 meters (2:23.80), freshman Katie Klaver was sixth in the mile (5:22.61), and sophomore Mackenzie Woodring was sixth in the 3,000 meters (11:05.74).

February 15

The Bulldogs competed in the non-scoring Grand Valley Laker Invitational, Feb. 13. Junior Kiesha Jones won the 400 meters in a provisional NCAA qualifying time of 57.29 while sophomore Jill Newberry did likewise in the pole vault with a school-record 7-09 effort. Sophomore Farrah Sewell took top honors in the 20-lb. weight throw (47-10.5) and junior Jamie Sollose won the triple jump (34-05). The 1600-meter relay team of Sollose, Newberry, freshman Richelle Robinson and Jones turned in a first-place time of 4:03.03.

Ferris is currently ranked seventh (121.50 points) in the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Team Dual Meet Rankings.

February 2

The Bulldogs won the Grand Valley Quadrangular meet, Jan. 29, with 107 points. . .Individual winners included freshman Farrah Sewell in the 20-pound weight throw (53-1), junior Jamie Sollose in the triple jump (35-3.5), junior Melissa Braxton in the 55-meter hurdles (8.79), freshman Jakisha Sharps in the 55-meter dash (7.27), and junior Kiesha Jones in the 400 meters (58.26). . .Sewell's throw was a Grand Valley Fieldhouse record.

January 25

The Bulldogs ran at the Saginaw Valley Invitational, Jan. 22. Freshman Farrah Sewell finished fourth in the 20-pound weight with a school-record throw of 52-7. . .FSU's top finish was by junior Keisha Jones, who took second in the 400 meters (58.69).

January 19

The Bulldogs competed in the Eastern Michigan Open, Jan. 16. At the meet, sophomore Farrah Sewell finished second in the 35-pound weight throw with an NCAA Division II provisional qualifying distance of 49-0.5.
