Jenny Irwin Claims All-America Honors At NCAA-II Outdoor Championships
Junior Jenny Irwin (Scottville/Mason County Central) of the Ferris State University women's outdoor track and field team claimed All-America honors with a fourth-place finish in the 1,500 meters Saturday (May 28) at the NCAA Division II Championships held at Abilene Christian University's Elmer Gray Stadium in Abilene, Texas.
Irwin was timed in 4:30.60 during Saturday evening's final round of competition in the event. She previously clocked the fourth-fastest preliminary time (4:40.18) in Thursday's (May 26) opening day of action at the NCAA-II Championships to advance to the finals.
The event was won by Alisha Williams of Western State (Colo.) in a time of 4:28.53. Olha Kryv'yak of Abilene Christian took second (4:29.47) and Lindsay Stalker of California-San Diego placed third (4:30.02) as only two seconds seperated the top four finishers among 12 finals competitors. Irwin's five points in the event gave Ferris State a share of 42nd place in the final team standings at the national meet.
Irwin had entered the national meet with the sixth-best (4:30.11) seed mark of 16 individuals selected to compete.
Freshman Kamitra Carroll (Flint/Carman-Ainsworth) also competed in the national meet and took 11th place in the shot put on Friday (May 27). Carroll's best toss was 45-11.25 in the event. Ninteen student-athletes competed in the shot put, which was won by April Burton of Cal-State Bakersfield with a throw of 50-5.25. Carroll was the highest finisher of four Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) competitors in the event.
Entering the NCAA-II Championships, Caroll's seed mark (47-3.75) ranked seventh overall of the 19 throwers. She previously also finished 11th in the shot put (44-2) at the 2005 NCAA-II Indoor Championships (March 11-12) held at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston, Mass.
Irwin becomes the 11th track and field athlete in FSU women's history to earn outdoor All-America recognition. The school's most recent outdoor All-America showing prior to this season came in 2002 when former student-athlete Tianna Kirkland placed among the top eight individuals in both the shot put and discus.
This season marked the second consecutive year Irwin had been chosen to compete in the national outdoor meet as she placed 11th overall in the 1,500 meters (4:40.73) as FSU's lone representative at the 2004 NCAA-II Outdoor Championships (May 27-29) held in Walnut, Calif.

Ferris Student-Athletes Compete At Dr. Keeler Invitational
Three members of the Ferris State University women's outdoor track and field team competed in the Dr. Keeler Invitational hosted by North Central (Ill.) College Friday (May 13) evening in Naperville, Ill.
Junior Jenny Irwin (Scottville/Mason County Central) won the 1,500 meters (4:30.39) in a field of 36 competitors.
Freshman Kamitra Carroll (Flint/Carman-Ainsworth) took first place in the shot put with a toss of 47-3.75.
In addition, junior Leanna Wolf (Fountain/Mason County Central) placed 13th in the 800 meters (2:19.28) for FSU.
All three student-athletes will await the official notification of the final participant list for the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships slated for May 26-28 in Abilene, Texas. The list of meet competitors will be announced later this week.

Ferris State Teams Place Sixth At GLIAC Championships
ThThe Ferris State University men's and women's outdoor track and field teams both took sixth place in the 2005 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championships held Thursday and Friday (May 5-6) at Grand Valley State's Lubbers Stadium in Allendale, Mich.
The Bulldog women's team registered 64.50 points in the 10-team field while the men's squad totaled 44.50 points in their nine-team division. Meet host Grand Valley State won both the women's and men's team titles with 259 and 220.50 points, respectively.
Junior Jenny Irwin (Scottville/Mason County Central) led the women's squad with a pair of runner-up performances. She placed second in both the 1,500 meters (4:34.90) and the 3,000 meters (10:11.17) to earn all-conference accolades in each event.
Freshman Kamitra Carroll (Flint/Carman-Ainsworth) also claimed All-GLIAC honors with a second-place effort in the shot put (46-6.75) as did junior Jessica Gladding (Fenwick/Central Montcalm), who finished third in the discus (126-3). Senior Sharon Smith (Inkster) took third place in the 100-meter dash (12.45) as the top three individual performers in each event picked up all-league recognition.
Smith also was fourth in the 200 meters (25.77), sophomore Ashley Farr (Detroit/King) placed fourth in the 400 meters (57.32) and junior Leanna Wolf (Fountain/Mason County Central) finished fourth in the 800 meters (2:14.19).
Senior Michele Vanderhyde (Howard City/Tri-County) recorded a seventh-place performance in the pole vault (10-4), freshman Dia Price (Mt. Morris/Beecher) took seventh place in the triple jump (34-11) and senior Mary Miller (Sault Ste. Marie) placed eighth in the 10,000 meters (39:20.13). Freshman Stephanie Root (Ludington/Mason County Central) tied for eighth place in the high jump (5-1.25).
The Bulldog women's team also finished fifth in both the 4x100-meter (50.60) and 4x400-meter (3:58.08) relays.
Senior Kurt Peterson (St. Louis) sparked the men's team by placing among the top eight finishers in four events. He earned all-conference laurels with a third-place showing in the pole vault (14-3.25) and also was seventh in the javelin (156-3), eighth in the long jump (21-0) along with eighth in the triple jump (42-0.75).
Sophomore Kyle Schuberg (Big Rapids) received All-GLIAC honors in two events as he took third place in both the 200 meters (22.26) and the long jump (22-4.25). Schuberg also placed fifth in the 100 meters (11.17).
Freshman Joe Mielke (Westland/Franklin) registered all-league kudos by taking third place in the high jump (6-5.50), senior Ryan Rouse (Macomb/Richmond) placed fifth in the pole vault (14-3.25) and junior Brent Harkness (Jamestown, N.Y.) finished sixth in the pole vault (13-9.25).
Mielke also tied for sixth place in the long jump (21-4.75) while the Bulldog men took sixth place in the 4x100-meter relay (44.94).
Selected squad members will compete in the North Central (Ill.) Dr. Keeler Invitational Friday, May 13, in Naperville, Ill.

Ferris State Competes In 39th Annual Hillsdale Gina Relays
The Ferris State University men's and women's outdoor track and field teams competed in the 39th annual Hillsdale Gina Relays Friday and Saturday (April 29-30) at HC's Ken Herrick Track in Hillsdale, Mich.
The non-scoring field included athletes from schools at a variety of levels, including NCAA Division I.
The Bulldog women's team recorded top 10 performances in six different events. Junior Jenny Irwin (Scottville/Mason County Central) highlighted the effort with a third-place finish in the 1,500-meter run (4:30.11).
Freshman Kamitra Carroll (Flint/Carman-Ainsworth) took fourth place in the shot put (47-3), senior Mary Miller (Sault Ste. Marie) finished ninth in the 3,000 meters (10:53.83) and senior Sharon Smith (Inkster/Oak Park) was 10th in the 100 meters (12.39).
The FSU women's team also finished seventh in the 4x400-meter relay (4:07.28) and placed 10th in the 4x100-meter relay (49.80).
Freshman Joe Mielke (Westland/Franklin) led the men's team by tying for third place in the high jump (6-8).
Sophomore Kyle Schuberg (Big Rapids) was fifth in the 200 meters (22.19), 11th in the 100 meters (11.11) and 16th in the long jump (21-10.75).
Senior Kurt Peterson (St. Louis) took ninth place in the triple jump (40-11) and tied for 10th place in the pole vault (14-0).
The Bulldogs also captured 14th place in the men's 4x100-meter relay (44.62) and finished 17th in the 4x400-meter relay (3:37.77).
Ferris State will take part in the 2005 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Outdoor Track and Field Championships Thursday and Friday, May 5-6, in Allendale, Mich. The meet will be hosted by Grand Valley State with Thursday's opening events set to begin at 3 p.m. (EDT).

Six Bulldog Athletes Compete In Eastern Michigan Twilight
The Ferris State University women's outdoor track and field team had six members compete in Friday's (April 22) Eastern Michigan Twilight Meet in Ypsilanti, Mich.
The non-scoring meet, which featured student-athletes from a variety of schools at all levels, was held under cold, wet and windy conditions on EMU's Olds-Marshall Track.
Junior Jenny Irwin (Scottville/Mason County Central) placed fifth in the 3,000 meters (10:00.97) to lead FSU. Junior Leanna Wolf (Fountain/Mason County Central) took sixth place in the 800 meters (2:17.80).
Sophomore Ashley Farr (Detroit/King) was 11th in the 400 meters (59.55), junior Geneva Jones (Detroit/Cooley) finished 13th in the 1,500 meters (4:48.45) and senior Mary Miller (Sault Ste. Marie) took 16th place in the 5,000 meters (18:49.05). In addition, freshman Chandra Robinson (Warren/Mott) placed 19th in the 800 meters (2:23.13).
Ferris State will take part in the Hillsdale "Gina" Relays this Friday and Saturday, April 29-30, in Hillsdale, Mich.

Saturday's Northwood Invitational Cancelled
The Ferris State University men's and women's outdoor track and field teams were to take part in the Northwood Invitational Saturday, April 23, in Midland, Mich. However, the meet has been cancelled due to the weather forecast for Saturday in Midland.
The forecast is calling for a temperature of 35 degrees, 30 mph winds and three to five inches of snow for the area.
Selected FSU athletes will instead compete in Friday's (April 22) Eastern Michigan Twilight meet beginning at 3 p.m. (EDT) in Ypsilanti, Mich.

Ferris Claims Team Title At Saginaw Valley State Invitational
The Ferris State University women's outdoor track and field team claimed the team championship in Saturday's (April 16) Saginaw Valley State Collegiate Invitational held at University Center, Mich.
FSU outdistanced the host Cardinals in the women's division with 161.50 points. SVSU placed second (139 points) while Siena Heights was third (134) in the 10-team field.
Ferris State posted 26 top-six performances in the women's competition and claimed titles in three individual events. Junior Jenny Irwin (Scottville/Mason County Central) won both the 800 meters (2:15.01) and the 1,500 meters (4:34.72). In addition, freshman Kamitra Carroll (Flint/Carman-Ainsworth) registered a first-place effort in the shout put (46-1).
Sophomore Ashley Farr (Detroit/King) earned runner-up kudos in both the 200 meters (26.84) and the 400 meters (59.43). Junior Leanna Wolf (Fountain/Mason County Central) finished second in the 800 meters (2:17.23), junior Geneva Jones (Detroit/Cooley) was second in the 1,500 meters (4:48.01) and the Bulldogs placed second in the women's 4x400-meter relay (4:05.96).
FSU received third-place performances from sophomore Julia Viel (Big Rapids) in the 3,000 meters (11:00.16), freshman Chandra Robinson (Warren/Mott) in the 800 meters (2:18.41) and senior Jennifer Delamater (Edmore/Montabella) in the 100 meters (13.42). Delamater also placed fourth in the 200 meters (27.57) while junior Kristen Balla (Farmington) finished fourth in the 3,000 meters (11:13.25). Junior Sarah Duesing (Sault Ste. Marie/Sault Area) tied for third place in the high jump (5-0).
Sophomore Larenda Hintz (Kingsford) took fourth place in the 400-meter hurdles (1:07.00), senior Michele Vanderhyde (Howard City/Tri-County) received fourth place honors in the pole vault (9-6) and freshman Dia Price (Mt. Morris/Beecher) was fourth overall in the triple jump (33-8.50).
Freshman Lacey Shavalier (Newaygo/White Cloud) claimed fifth place in the 400-meter hurdles (1:09.43), Price was sixth in the 200 meters (28.15) and freshman Ashley Sholl (Fort Wayne, Ind./Bishop Luers) placed sixth in the 400-meter hurdles (1:12.16). Freshman Stephanie Root (Ludington/Mason County Central) took sixth place in the high jump (4-10), sophomore Sonya White (Allegan) was sixth in the hammer throw (137-9.50) and Carroll finished sixth in the discus (115-4).
Junior Jessica Gladding (Fenwick/Central Montcalm) placed in three events as she was third in the hammer throw (151-11), fourth in the discus (120-2.50) and fifth in the shot put (39-8.50).
Ferris State will next take part in the Northwood Invitational Saturday, April 23, beginning at 11 a.m. (EDT) in Midland, Mich.

Ferris Wins Four Events At Annual Bulldog Invitational
The Ferris State University women's outdoor track and field team hosted the annual Bulldog Invitational Saturday (April 9) at FSU's Top Taggart Field in Big Rapids, Mich.
The non-scoring meet included athletes from Grand Valley State, Lake Superior State, Cornerstone, Saginaw Valley State, Northwood, Calvin, Aquinas and Michigan Tech among other schools.
The Bulldog women's team had four individual event winners. Freshman Chandra Robinson (Warren/Mott) claimed the 800 meters (2:19.08), junior Jenny Irwin (Scottville/Mason County Central) won the 3,000 meters (10:07.21) and junior Sarah Duesing (Sault Ste. Marie/Sault Area) earned first-place honors in the high jump (5-2). Freshman Kamitra Carroll (Flint/Carman-Ainsworth) also placed first in the shot put (47-0.25).
Freshman Dia Price (Mt. Morris/Beecher) tied for second place in the high jump (5-0) in addition to receiving fourth place recognition in the triple jump (34-1.25). Sophomore Ashley Farr (Detroit/King) took third place in the 400 meters (59.16), junior Geneva Jones (Detroit/Cooley) placed third in the 1,500 meters (4:50.73) and sophomore Julia Viel (Big Rapids) finished third in the 5,000 meters (19:20.36).
Junior Kristen Balla (Farmington) was fourth in the 5,000 meters (19:27.06), freshman Stephanie Root (Ludington/Mason County Central) placed fourth in the high jump (5-0) and junior Jessica Gladding (Fenwick/Central Montcalm) finished fourth in the hammer throw (141-5).
Senior Michele Vanderhyde (Howard City/Tri-County) took fifth place in the pole vault (9-6), senior Abigail Bearman (Port Huron/Northern) captured sixth place in the javelin (101-6) and senior Jennifer Delamater (Edmore/Montabella) was sixth in the 100 meters (13.24).
The Bulldogs also placed fifth in the women's 4x100-meter relay (50.51) and sixth in the 4x400-meter relay (4:10.47).
The Bulldogs will return to action by competing in the Saginaw Valley State Invitational Saturday, April 16, in University Center, Mich. The meet is set to begin at 11 a.m. (EDT).

Bulldogs Finish Second At Saint Joseph's Invitational
The Ferris State University women's outdoor track and field team took part in the second annual Saint Joseph's (Ind.) Gene and Rose Edmonds Invitational held Saturday (April 2) in Rensselaer, Ind.
The Bulldog women placed second of five teams with 141.5 points. Host Saint Joseph’s won the women’s competition with 160.50 points. Ferris registered 27 top-six performances, including four individual event winners.
Senior Sharon Smith (Inkster/Oak Park) won the 100 meters (12.36), junior Sarah Duesing (Sault Ste. Marie/Sault Area) tied for first place in the high jump (5-0) and senior Michele Vanderhyde (Howard City/Tri-County) took the pole vault (9-6). In addition, freshman Kamitra Carroll (Flint/Carman-Ainsworth) met the NCAA Division II National Provisional qualification mark in winning the shot put (44-10.75).
Freshman Chandra Robinson (Warren/Mott) placed second in the 400 meters (1:02.07), junior Geneva Jones (Detroit/Cooley) earned runner-up honors in the 800 meters (2:26.07) and junior Jenny Irwin (Scottville/Mason County Central) finished second in the 1,500 meters (4:44.40). Sophomore Larenda Hintz (Kingsford) was second in the 400-meter hurdles (1:09.24), sophomore Julia Viel (Big Rapids) took third place in the 5,000 meters (19:43.74) and senior Abigail Bearman (Port Huron/Northern) placed third in the javelin (98-2).
Sophomore Ashley Farr (Detroit/King) finished second in the 200 meters (27.49) and third in the 400 meters (1:02.17) while senior Crystal Kuzma (Wixom/Western) placed third in the 100 meters (12.74) along with sixth in the 200 meters (29.62).
Senior Jennifer Delamater (Edmore/Montabella) registered a fourth-place finish in the 200 meters (29.54), Caroll was fourth in the discus (129-7) and freshman Anna Barrington (Jonesville) captured fourth-place kudos in the shot put (35-8). Barrington also finished fifth in the discus (115-10) along with sixth in the hammer throw (114-7) while sophomore Sonya White (Allegan) placed fourth in the hammer throw (130-2) and sixth in the shot put (34-1.25).
Freshman Ashley Sholl (Fort Wayne, Ind./Bishop Luers) took fifth place in the 400 meters (1:10.28), junior Kristen Balla (Farmington) was fifth in the 5,000 meters (20:02.13) and senior Mary Miller (Sault Ste. Marie) placed sixth in the 5,000 meters (20:24.05). Freshman Stephanie Root (Ludington/Mason County Central) finished fifth in the high jump (4-10) and freshman Lacey Shavalier (Newaygo/White Cloud) earned sixth-place recognition in the 100-meter hurdles (16.35). Ferris also was second in the women’s 4x100-meter relay (51.26).
FSU will host the annual Bulldog Invitational Saturday, April 9, beginning at 12 p.m. (EDT). The meet will be held at FSU’s Top Taggart Field in Big Rapids, Mich.

FSU Relay Team Claims All-America Honors
The Ferris State women's indoor track and field team had six student-athletes compete in the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships held Friday and Saturday (March 11-12) at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston, Mass.
FSU's women's distance medley relay team of juniors Jenny Irwin (Scottville/Mason County Central), Leanna Wolf (Fountain/Mason County Central) and Geneva Jones (Detroit/Cooley) along with freshman Chandra Robinson (Warren/Mott) earned All-America honors by finishing eighth overall in a time of 11:56.52.
Senior Sharon Smith (Inkster/Oak Park) placed 17th in the 200 meters (25.57), Irwin took 11th place in the mile run (4:58.38) and freshman Kamitra Carroll (Flint/Carman-Ainsworth) was 11th in the shot put (44-2).
Ferris State will open the outdoor season Saturday, April 2, at the Saint Joseph's (Ind.) Invitational in Rensselaer, Ind.

Ferris Finishes Tied For Fourth Overall At GLIAC Championships
The Ferris State University women's track and field team tied for fourth place at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Indoor Championships held Friday and Saturday (Feb. 25-26) in University Center, Mich.
The women's team totaled 51.5 points to tie Findlay for fourth place in the nine-team field. Grand Valley State was first (188 points), Ashland finished second (160.5) and Hillsdale placed third (96.5). The meet was hosted by Saginaw Valley State University in SVSU's Ryder Center Arena.
Junior Jenny Irwin (Scottville/Mason County Central) won the 3,000 meters (10:12.08) for Ferris State. She also tallied a sixth-place performance (5:00.70) in the mile run.
Freshman Kamitra Carroll (Flint/Carman-Ainsworth) earned runner-up honors in the shot put (45-10.75) in addition to posting the school's fourth-best all-time effort (47-11) to finish ninth overall in the weight throw.
Senior Sharon Smith (Inkster/Oak Park) placed third in both the 55 meters (7.27) and the 200 meters (25.31). Her performances in the 55 meters and 200 meters rank third and second, respectively, on FSU's all-time indoor charts.
Senior Mary Miller (Sault Ste. Marie) was sixth in the 5,000 meters (18:38.93), junior Leanna Wolf (Fountain/Mason County Central) took sixth place in the 800 meters (2:17.75) and senior Michele Vanderhyde (Howard City/Tri-County) finished tied for seventh place in the pole vault (10-4).
FSU also was second in the women's distance medley relay (11:51.89) and sixth in the 4x400-meter relay (4:03.14). The distance medley tandem of Irwin, Wolf, freshman Chandra Robinson (Warren/Mott) and junior Geneva Jones (Detroit/Cooley) set a school record and earned national-qualifying status with their performance.
Meet participants for the 2005 NCAA-II National Indoor Championships slated to be held Friday and Saturday, March 11-12, will be announced this Tuesday (March 1). The national meet will be held at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston, Mass.

FSU Competes In Central Michigan Jack Skoog Open
The Ferris State University women's indoor track and field team took part in the Central Michigan Jack Skoog Open held Friday (Feb. 18) at Mt. Pleasant, Mich.
The Bulldog women's squad compiled 18 top-five performances in the non-scoring meet, which included schools from several collegiate levels.
Senior Sharon Smith (Inkster/Oak Park) claimed the 200 meters (25.49) and placed third in the 60 meters (7.91) for FSU.
Junior Jenny Irwin (Scottville/Mason County Central) emerged victorious in the 800 meters (2:14.40), junior Leanna Wolf (Fountain/Mason County Central) claimed the 600 meters (1:37.85) and freshman Chandra Robinson (Warren/Mott) finished third in the 600 meters (1:39.85).
Sophomore Ashley Farr (Detroit/King) placed fourth in the 200 meters (27.16) and took sixth place in the 400 meters (1:02.94). Junior Geneva Jones (Detroit/Cooley) was fifth in the mile run (5:15.70), senior Crystal Kuzma (Wixom/Western) captured fifth place in the 60 meters (8.13) and sophomore Elizabeth Engle (Colon) finished fifth in the 60-meter hurdles (9.69). Senior Jennifer Delamater (Edmore/Montabella) took sixth place in both the 60 meters (8.20) and the 200 meters (27.24) while sophomore Larenda Hintz (Kingsford) placed sixth in the 60-meter hurdles (9.75).
In the field events, freshman Dia Price (Mt. Morris/Beecher) was fourth in the high jump (5-2.25). Freshman Kamitra Carroll (Flint/Carmen-Ainsworth) placed third in the shot put (43-6.50) and fourth in the weight throw (44-3.50). Sophomore Sonya White (Allegan) finished fifth in the weight throw (43-10.50).
FSU also recorded a fourth-place finish in the women's 4x400-meter relay (4:10.05).
Ferris State will compete in the GLIAC Indoor Championships Friday and Saturday, Feb. 25-26, in University Center, Mich. The meet will be hosted by Saginaw Valley State University.

Ferris Turns In Solid Performances At Eastern Michigan Open
The Ferris State University women's indoor track and field team turned in some solid performances in the Eastern Michigan Open held Saturday (Feb. 12) at EMU's Bob Parks Track in Ypsilanti, Mich. The Bulldog women's team tallied 16 top-eight finishes in the non-scoring meet, which included schools from all levels.
Junior Jenny Irwin (Scottville/Mason County Central) led Ferris by claiming the mile run (4:58.96). Senior Mary Miller (Sault Ste. Marie) captured runner-up honors in the 3,000 meters (10:25.69), junior Leanna Wolf (Fountain/Mason County Central) placed second in the 800 meters (2:17.55) and freshman Dia Price (Mt. Morris/Beecher) was third in the triple jump (32-2) for FSU.
Junior Geneva Jones (Detroit/Cooley) took fourth place in the 800 meters (2:20.08), Price was fifth in the high jump (4-11.75) and sophomore Larenda Hintz (Kingsford) finished fifth in the 60-meter hurdles (9.72). Ferris also received a fourth place finish from senior Sharon Smith (Inkster/Oak Park) in the 200 meters (25.44) along with a sixth-place performance in the 60 meters (8.00).
Freshman Stephanie Root (Ludington/Mason County Central) was sixth in the triple jump (29-8.75), freshman Chandra Robinson (Warren/Mott) placed sixth in the 800 meters (2:26.26) and junior Crystal Flutur (Ludington/Mason County Central) finished seventh in the 800 meters (2:26.77). Root also tied for sixth place in the jump (4-11.75).
The Bulldogs also had sophomore Elizabeth Engle (Colon) place seventh in the 60-meter hurdles (10.20) and senior Michele Vanderhyde (Howard City/Tri-County) finish eighth in the pole vault (10-6). Ferris was fourth overall in the women's 4x400-meter relay (4:11.58).

Bulldogs Place Fourth At Division II Team Challenge
The Ferris State University women's indoor track and field team registered a fourth place finish in the annual Division II Team Challenge meet hosted by the University of Findlay on Saturday (Feb. 5) at Findlay, Ohio. The event was sponsored by the United States Track Coaches Association.
The Bulldog women's team scored 74 points among 13 participating schools. Hillsdale won the women's competition (110.50 points), Findlay placed second (102) and Indianapolis was third (79).
Junior Jenny Irwin (Scottville/Mason County Central) set a school record and met the NCAA national qualifying standard in winning the mile run (4:59.11). In addition, senior Mary Miller (Sault Ste. Marie) captured first place honors in the 3,000 meters (10:48.85).
Miller also took second place in the 5,000 meters (18:53.16), freshman Kamitra Carroll (Flint/Carmen-Ainsworth) was second in the shot put (44-4.75) and junior Leanna Wolf (Fountain/Mason County Central) earned runner-up honors in the 800 meters (2:18.75).
Senior Michele Vanderhyde (Howard City/Tri-County) placed third in the pole vault (10-0.75), junior Kristen Balla (Farmington) was fourth in the 5,000 meters (19:16.41) and sophomore Julia Viel (Big Rapids) finished fifth in the 5,000 meters (19:21.02).
FSU also received a fifth place performance from sophomore Sonya White (Allegan) in the weight throw (44-10.75), a sixth-place effort by freshman Stephanie Root (Ludington/Mason County Central) in the high jump (5-2.25) and a seventh-place showing from junior Geneva Jones (Detroit/Cooley) in the 800 meters (2:22.88).
Senior Sharon Smith (Inkster/Oak Park) placed seventh in the 60 meters (8.01) and eighth in the 200 meters (26.25) while freshman Chandra Robinson (Warren/Mott) finished eighth in the 800 meters (2:27.90). FSU also was seventh in the women's 4x400-meter relay (4:13.42).
Ferris State will take part in the Eastern Michigan Open Saturday, Feb. 12, in Ypsilanti, Mich. The meet is set to begin at 11 a.m. (EST).

Ferris Sets Two School Records At GVSU Laker Challenge
The Ferris State University women’s indoor track and field team took part in the Mike Lints Laker Challenge hosted by Grand Valley State Friday (Jan. 21) in Allendale, Mich. The Bulldog women’s team recorded 13 performances among the top four finishers in their respective events.
Freshman Kamitra Carroll (Flint/Carmen-Ainsworth) posted a school-record toss (47-9.25) in winning the women’s shot put. Junior Jenny Irwin (Scottville/Mason County Central) also registered the school’s best mark ever in claiming the 3,000 meters (10:12.05).
The Bulldog women’s team also had two other top five all-time school performances as senior Sharon Smith (Inskter/Oak Park) placed second in the 55 meters (7.35) and sophomore Sonya White (Allegan) captured the weight throw (45-2.25).
Junior Geneva Jones (Detroit/Cooley) won the 800 meters (2:23.13), freshman Stephanie Root (Ludington/Mason County Central) took first place in the high jump (5-1) and FSU emerged victorious in the 4x400-meter relay (4:10.30).
Ferris also received a second-place finish from sophomore Elizabeth Engle (Colon) in the 55-meter hurdles (9.03) and third place performances from Smith in the 200 meters (26.90) along with sophomore Jennifer Walsh (Wyoming/Kellogsville) in the 55-meter hurdles (9.56).
Freshman Chandra Robinson (Warren/Mott) was fourth in the 400 meters (1:03.07), sophomore Brook Smith (Gaines/Swartz Creek) placed fourth in the 55 hurdles (10.18) and FSU “B” relay tandem took third place in the 4x400-meter event (4:32.30).

FSU Officially Opens Season At SVSU Cardinal Collegiate Indoor Open
The Ferris State University women's indoor track and field team opened the 2004-05 campaign by taking part in the 11th annual Saginaw Valley State Cardinal Collegiate Indoor Open Friday (Jan. 14) in University Center, Mich.
The Bulldog women's team recorded 16 top-five finishes in the non-scoring competition.
Freshman Kamitra Carroll (Flint/Carmen-Ainsworth) led the FSU women's team with a first-place performance in the shot put (45-8). Carroll, who also took fourth place (44-6.50) in the weight throw, reached the NCAA provisional qualifying standard in the shot put while posting Ferris' second-best all-time indoor mark in the event.
Freshman Dia Price (Mt. Morris/Beecher) claimed the high jump title (5-2), senior Michele Vanderhyde (Howard City/Tri-County) placed second in the pole vault (9-6) and sophomore Julia Viel (Big Rapids) was second in the mile run (5:31.30).
Senior Crystal Kuzma (Wixom/Western) captured second place in the 60 meters (8.10), senior Sharon Smith (Inkster/Oak Park) took third place in the 200 meters (26.36) and junior Crystal Flutur (Ludington/Mason County Central) registered a third place performance in the mile run (5:35.32).
Senior Mary Miller (Sault Ste. Marie) placed third in the 3,000 meters (10:45.45), freshman Stephanie Root (Ludington/Mason County Central) was third in the high jump (5-0) and sophomore Elizabeth Engle (Colon) finished fourth in the 60-meter hurdles (9.81). Senior Jennifer Delamater (Edmore/Montabella) took fourth place in the 60 meters (8.21), sophomore Ashley Farr (Detroit/King) placed fifth in the 200 meters (27.51) and sophomore Sonya White (Allegan) recorded a fifth-place effort in the weight throw (43-9).
The FSU women's team also won the distance medley relay (12:58.42) and finished second in the 4x400-meter relay (4:14.72).
Ferris State will take part in the Grand Valley State Mike Lints Laker Challenge Friday, Jan. 21, beginning at 5 p.m. (EST) in Allendale, Mich.
