Jenny Irwin Places 11th At NCAA-II Championships

Sophomore Jenny Irwin of the 2003-04 Ferris State University women’s track placed 11th overall in the 1,500 meters on Saturday at the 23rd annual NCAA Division II Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships held in Hilmer Lodge Stadium on the campus of Mount San Antonio College in Walnut, Calif.

Irwin clocked 4:40.73 in the final round of the event after previously placing fourth in the first of two preliminary heats with a time of 4:36.90 on Thursday (May 27).

Alisha Williams of Western State (Colo.) claimed first place in a time of 4:21.08 while Abilene Christian's Adeh Mwamba placed second overall at 4:26.69.

The national championships were hosted by California State Polytechnic University-Pomona. The top eight finishers on Saturday in each event earned All-America recognition.

Ferris' Jenny Irwin Advances To 1,500-Meter Run Finals

Sophomore Jenny Irwin of the 2003-04 Ferris State University women’s track and field team advanced into the 1,500-meter run finals by posting the eighth-fastest preliminary qualifying time Thursday afternoon at the 23rd annual NCAA Division II Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships held in Hilmer Lodge Stadium on the campus of Mount San Antonio College in Walnut, Calif.

Irwin placed fourth in the first of two preliminary heats by clocking 4:36.90 to earn a berth in Saturday's (May 29) event finals. The top five finishers in each heat plus the next two fastest qualifying marks will take part in Saturday's finals, which are set to begin at 7:37 p.m. (EDT).

The national championships are being hosted by California State Polytechnic University-Pomona.

Irwin held the ninth-fastest time (4:33.11) of 20 competitors selected to participate entering the prelims. The top eight finishers on Saturday will earn All-America recognition.

Irwin met the national provisional standard and broke the school’s outdoor record by placing fourth overall (4:33.11) in the 1,500 meters at the 2004 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Outdoor Track and Field Championships (May 6-7) in Hillsdale, Mich. A 2003-04 GLIAC Indoor Track and Field All-Academic Team honoree, Irwin captured all-conference recognition and posted the school’s second-best all-time effort (10:20.78) by winning the 3,000 meters at the league’s indoor championships (Feb. 27-28) in Findlay, Ohio.

The 2003 NCAA Division II Cross Country Coaches Association Individual All-Academic Team pick presently has recorded a combined six first-place indoor and outdoor individual track and field finishes this campaign. She claimed first-team All-GLIAC accolades with a seventh-place (22:29.8) finish at the 2003 GLIAC Cross Country Championships (10/25), which was hosted by Ferris State at Katke Golf Course in Big Rapids, Mich.

Ferris Athletes Compete In Two Different Events

Selected members of the Ferris State University women's outdoor track and field team took part in the University of Windsor (Ontario) Open on Friday (May 14) at Windsor, Ontario.

Junior Sharon Smith placed second in the 200 meters (25.11), sophomore Leanna Wolf took third place in the 800 meters (2:15.67) and senior Kristyn Buck captured fourth-place honors in the pole vault (10-10). Sophomore Jenny Irwin added a fifth-place effort in the 800 meters (2:20.19).

In addition, the Bulldogs won the 4x100-meter relay (48.83). The quartet included Smith, seniors Crystal Kuzma and Jennifer Delmatater along with freshman Elizabeth Engle.

FSU also sent student-athletes to the Aquinas Twlight Invitational held Wednesday (May 12) in Grand Rapids, Mich. Senior Rachel Cox claimed the 5,000 meters (18:38.38), Buck was fourth in the pole vault (10-6) and junior Michele Vanderhyde finished 10th in the pole vault (10-0).

The official list of NCAA Division II national qualifiers will be release later this week.

Ferris Finishes Sixth At GLIAC Outdoor Championships

The Ferris State women's outdoor track and field team took part in the 2004 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Outdoor Track and Field Championships held Thursday and Friday (May 6-7) at Hillsdale, Mich.

The Bulldog women's team placed sixth of 10 teams with 52 points. Grand Valley State won the women's crown.

The FSU women's team posted four NCAA Division II National Provisional Qualification marks and two school records during the event. Junior Sharon Smith set a new school record and met the national standard with a third-place finish in the 200 meters (24.75). Sophomore Jenny Irwin also registered a school-best and NCAA qualification performance while placing fourth in the 1,500 meters (4:33.11).

Sophomore Leanna Wolf recorded the school's fourth-best all-time mark and reached the national provisional time en route to a third-place finish in the 800 meters (2:13.61). In addition, the women's 4x100-meter relay squad posted FSU's second-best all-time effort with a third-place NCAA-qualifying mark (47.90).

Senior Rachel Cox placed second in the 5,000 meters (18:00.67), senior Kristyn Buck was fourth in the pole vault (11-3.50), junior Mary Miller finished sixth in both the 5,000 (18:24.61) along with the 10,000 meters (41:31.73) and senior Crystal Kuzma took seventh place in the 100 meters (12.36).

Irwin added a sixth-place finish in the 3,000 meters (10:20.91), senior Jennifer Delamater was eighth in the 100 meters (12.65) and sophomore Jessica Gladding placed eighth in the discus (115-5). FSU also was sixth in the women's 4x400-meter relay (4:03.16).

Selected FSU student-athletes will take part in the University of Windsor (Ontario) Open this Friday (May 14) in Windsor, Ontario. The meet begins at 2 p.m. (EDT).

Ferris Athletes Compete At Butler Twilight Meet

The Ferris State University women's outdoor track and field team sent a handful of athletes to the Butler (Ind.) Twilight meet held Saturday (May 1) in Indianapolis, Ind.

Junior Sharon Smith placed third in the 200 meters (25.43), senior Kristyn Buck tied for third place in the pole vault (10-6.25) and sophomore Jenny Irwin took fourth place in the 3,000 meters (10:06.00). Senior Rachel Cox finished 10th in the 5,000 meters (17:57.28) while setting a new school record in the process.

The Bulldogs also placed third in the 4x400-meter relay (3:58.64) and tied for sixth in the 4x100-meter relay (48.74).

Ferris Prepares For GLIAC Championships By Taking Part In Northwood Open

The Ferris State University women's outdoor track and field team took part in the non-scoring Northwood Open held Saturday (May 1) in Midland, Mich.

The Bulldog women's team recorded 12 top-six finishes, highlighted by sophomore Jaime Lyberg's first-place effort in the 400 meters (1:01.14).

Sophomore Kathryn Lange placed second in the 1,500-meter run (5:05.24), junior Mary Miller was second in the 3,000 meters (10:34.70) and freshman Larenda Hintz took third place in the 400-meter hurdles (1:08.35).

Junior Michele Vanderhyde finished third in the pole vault (10-6), freshman Julia Viel registered a fourth-place performance in the 3,000 meters (10:54.50) and freshman Jennifer Walsh placed fourth in the 100-meter hurdles (16.93).

Freshman Katie Hanover was fourth in the pole vault (9-6.25) and sophomore Jessica Gladding placed fourth in the shot put (38-3.25).

Ferris Takes Part In Hillsdale Gina Relays Meet

The Ferris State women's outdoor track and field team took part in the 38th annual Hillsdale "Gina" Relays held Friday and Saturday (April 23-24) in Hillsdale, Mich. The non-scoring event was the largest collegiate meet in the state with more than 3,000 student-athletes competing.

The Bulldog women's team had 14 top-20 performances, including a fourth-place finish from sophomore Jenny Irwin in the 1,500 meters (4:37.76).

Freshman Julia Viel placed seventh in the 3,000 meters (10:48.10), sophomore Leanna Wolf took eighth place in the 800 meters (2:15.44) and freshman Ashley Farr was 13th in the 400 meters (58.80).

Senior Kristyn Buck took 11th place in the pole vault (11-0.50), junior Sharon Smith tied for 12th place in the 100 meters (12.70), sophomore Kathryn Lange finished 13th in the 3,000 meters (11:00.40), sophomore Kristen Balla was 14th in the 3,000 meters (11:05.90) and Smith finished 14th in the 200 meters (25.62).

Senior Jennifer Delamater tied for 15th place in the 100 meters (12.77), senior Crystal Kuzma was 17th in the 400 meters (59.12) and junior Michele Vanderhyde placed 19th in the pole vault (10-6). FSU also finished sixth in the 4x100-meter relay (48.28) and seventh in the 4x400-meter relay (4:00.10).

Ferris will take part in the Northwood Open Saturday, May 1, beginning at 11 a.m. (EDT) in Midland, Mich.

Bulldogs Win Six Events At Non-Scoring SVSU Invitational

The Ferris State University women's outdoor track and field team took part in the non-scoring Saginaw Valley State Invitational Saturday (April 17) in University Center, Mich.

The Bulldog women's team posted 20 top-three performances, including six individual championships.

Senior Crystal Kuzma claimed the 100 meters (12.42), junior Sharon Smith won the 200 meters (25.42) and freshman Ashley Farr emerged victorious in the 400 meters (58.34). Sophomore Jenny Irwin finished first in the 800 meters (2:15.65), sophomore Crystal Flutur took first place in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (11:53.17) and senior Kristyn Buck won the pole vault (11-0) for Ferris State.

Smith was second in the 100 meters (12.43), sophomore Leanna Wolf earned runner-up kudos in the 800 meters (2:19.13) and sophomore Kathryn Lange placed second overall in the 1,500 meters (5:03.13). Junior Mary Miller finished second in the 3,000 meters (10:47.78), junior Michele Vanderhyde tied for second place in the pole vault (10-6) and FSU was second in the women's 4x400-meter relay (4:01.40).

Sophomore Jessica Gladding placed second in the discus (127-8.50) and third in both the shot put (38-8.50) and the hammer throw (138-10.50). Junior Abigail Bearman was third in the javelin (98-8.50).

Other third-place efforts included Farr in the 200 meters (26.05), sophomore Jaime Lyberg in the 400 meters (1:00.07), sophomore Geneva Jones in the 1,500 meters (5:06.49) and freshman Elizabeth Engle in the 100-meter hurdles (15.97).

The Bulldogs will compete in the Hillsdale Gina Relays Friday and Saturday, April 23-24, at Hillsdale, Mich. The meet is set for a 5 p.m. (EDT) start on Friday.

Ferris State Hosts Annual Bulldog Invitational

The Ferris State University women’s outdoor track and field team hosted the annual Bulldog Invitational Thursday (April 8) at FSU’s Top Taggart Field in Big Rapids, Mich.

The non-scoring meet included student-athletes from Aquinas, Grand Valley State, Michigan Tech, Northern Michigan and Northwood in addition to the host Bulldogs.

Junior Sharon Smith won both the 100 (11.90) and 200 (25.30) meter runs for FSU. Sophomore Jenny Irwin claimed the 3,000-meter run (10:05.80) while sophomore Leanna Wolf was victorious in the 800 meters (2:17.00).

Sophomore Jessica Gladding placed first in the shot put (38-10.25) and was second overall in the discus (117-4). Senior Jennifer Delamater finished second in the 100 (12.0) and 200 (25.9) meters for FSU. Senior Crystal Kuzma and freshman Ashley Farr both earned runner-up accolades in the 400 meters (59.4) while senior Molly Machinski took second place in the 100-meter hurdles (15.3).

Sophomore Crystal Flutur received runner-up honors in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (12:12.20). Ferris State also finished first in the women’s 4x100-meter (48.10) and the 4x400-meter (4:04.10) relays.

Senior Kristyn Buck also competed in Saturday's (April 10) Michigan State Spartan Invitational. She placed third in the pole vault (11-6.25) while setting a school record and reaching the NCAA-II Provisional National Qualification mark at East Lansing, Mich.

The Bulldogs will take part in the Saginaw Valley State Invitational Saturday (April 17) in University Center, Mich. The meet is set for an 11 a.m. (EDT) start.

Ferris Women Finish Second At Bluffton Beaver Invitational

The Ferris State women’s outdoor track and field team took part in the Bluffton (Ohio) Beaver Invitational Saturday (April 3) at BC’s Salzman Stadium in Bluffton, Ohio.

In addition to Ferris State and host Bluffton, the meet also included student-athletes from Defiance (Ohio), Albion, Taylor (Ind.), Notre Dame College (Ohio), Tiffin (Ohio) and Bowling Green State.

The Bulldog women’s team compiled 136 points en route to a second-place finish behind NCAA Division I member BGSU, which posted 337 points.

Sophomore Jenny Irwin set a school record in the 5,000 meters by clocking a first-place time of 18:03.21. Fellow sophomore Crystal Flutur also broke a school record with a first-place effort (11:58.26) in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

Senior Rachel Cox won the 10,000 meters (38:43.99) while recording the school’s fourth-best all-time mark and junior Mary Miller registered FSU’s fifth-best all-time performance in the same event by finishing second overall (39:23.77).

Sophomore Geneva Jones earned runner-up honors in the 800 meters (2:20.87) and freshman Julia Viel placed second in the 5,000 meters (19:11.04) for the Bulldogs. Ferris also finished second in the women’s 4x100-meter relay (49.55).

In the women’s pole vault, senior Kristyn Buck finished first (11-0.25) while junior Michele Vanderhyde took second place (10-6) in the event.

Ferris will return home to host the annual Bulldog Invitational Thursday, April 8, at FSU's Top Taggart Field in Big Rapids, Mich. The meet, which is Ferris' only home outing this campaign, begins at 12 p.m. (EDT).

Bulldog Women Finish Second In Opening Outdoor Meet

The Ferris State women's outdoor track and field team opened the 2004 outdoor campaign by taking part in the St. Joseph's (Ind.) Gene and Rose Edmonds Invitational Saturday (March 27) at Rensselaer, Ind.

The Bulldog women's team placed second in the three-team field with 120 points. Saginaw Valley State won the women's division with 135 points while host St. Joseph's totaled 109 points in placing third overall.

Ferris had four individual champions in the women's field.

In the 5,000 meters, senior Rachel Cox placed first (18:45.42) overall. Junior Mary Miller finished second (18:59.37) while freshman Julia Viel was third (19:27.50) in the same event.

Sophomore Jenny Irwin won the 1,500 meters (4:44.24). Sophomore Geneva Jones took second place (4:56.25) in the event while sophomore Leanna Wolf claimed third place (4:59.45).

Senior Crystal Kuzma received first-place kudos in the 100 meters (12.50). Senior Jennifer Delamater won the long jump (17-4.25) and added a runner-up effort in the 100 meters (12.60). Freshman Ashley Farr placed second in both the 400 meters (1:02.38) along with the 200 meters (26.81) while sophomore Jaime Lyberg was second in the 800 meters (2:27.72).

Junior Abigail Bearman took third place in the javelin (98-11) and senior Kristyn Buck placed third in the pole vault (10-6). Sophomore Jessica Gladding was third overall in both the shot put (37-7.50) and discus (116-6). Senior Molly Machinski finished third in the 100-meter hurdles (15.87).

The Bulldog women's team also won the 4x100-meter relay (48.91) and placed third in the 4x400-meter relay (4:17.61).

GLIAC Indoor Track & Field Championships Results/Information

The Ferris State women's indoor track and field team placed sixth while the men's squad tied for seventh place at the 2003-04 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Indoor Track and Field Championships held Friday and Saturday (Feb. 27-28) at the University of Findlay's Malcolm Athletic Center in Findlay, Ohio.

The Bulldog women compiled 47 points in the team competition, which was won by Grand Valley State with 185.5 points. GVSU also won the men's division with 185 points. FSU totaled 12 points in the men's team standings.

Sophomore Jenny Irwin (Scottville/Mason County Central) captured the 3,000-meter run in a time of 10:20.78 to lead the Bulldog women. Her performance ranks as the second-best mark in school history.

The Bulldog women also placed second overall in the 4x800-meter relay, which clocked a school-record time of 9:14.16 in the event.

Senior Crystal Kuzma (Wixom/Western) finished third in the 55 meters (7.28), sophomore Leanna Wolf (Fountain/Mason County Central) took fourth place in the 800 meters (2:17.12) and senior Rachel Cox (Gladstone/Battle Creek Lakeview) placed fifth in both the 3,000 meters (10:30.73) along with the 5,000 meters (18:23.66). Cox's times in the 3,000 and 5,000 meters rank fourth and third, respectively, among the school's all-time performers.

Sophomore Geneva Jones (Detroit/Cooley) was sixth in the 800 meters (2:19.19), Irwin placed sixth in the mile run (5:07.59) and junior Michele Vanderhyde (Howard City/Tri-County) finished eighth in the pole vault (10-6.75). FSU also took sixth place in the 4x400-meter relay (4:05.81).

In the men's competition, Ferris was led by senior Kurt Peterson's (St. Louis) runner-up effort in the pole vault (15-3). Sophomore Ben Petipren (Melvin/Brown City) finished eighth in the pole vault (13-9.25), junior Tom Swartwood (Morley/Morley-Stanwood) placed eighth in the shot put (46-10.25) and the Bulldogs took eighth place in both the 4x400 (3:34.29) and 4x800 (8:22.76) meter relays.

Freshman Kyle Schuberg (Big Rapids) was ninth in the long jump (21-6.25) and sophomore Michael Anderson (Farmington Hills/Royal Oak Shrine) finished ninth in the high jump (6-0.75).

The Bulldogs will open their outdoor track and field campaign Saturday, March 27, at the Saint Joseph's (Ind.) Invitational in Rensselaer, Ind. The meet is set for an 11 a.m. (EST) start.

Ferris Places Sixteen Competitors Among Top Eight At CMU Meet

The Ferris State University women’s track and field team competed in the Central Michigan Jack Skoog Open held Friday (Feb. 20) at Mount Pleasant, Mich. FSU totaled 16 top-eight finishes in the non-scoring meet, which included Central Michigan, Lake Superior State, Saginaw Valley State and Northwood in addition to the Bulldogs.

Sophomore Leanna Wolf ran the fastest (2:18.93) time in the 800 meters to lead Ferris State. Sophomore Jenny Irwin took third place in the mile run (5:10.44), senior Rachel Cox was third overall in the 3,000 meters (10:39.23) and sophomore Geneva Jones placed fourth in the 800 meters (2:20.61).

Freshman Ashley Farr finished fourth in the 400 meters (61.68), sophomore Jaime Lyberg took fifth place in the 400 meters (62.27) and senior Kristyn Buck tied for fifth place in the pole vault (10-6). FSU also finished fourth in the 4x400-meter relay (4:14.89).

Bulldogs Register Eight Top-Eight Finishes At EMU Classic

The Ferris State women’s indoor track and field team competed in the Eastern Michigan Classic Saturday (Feb. 14) in Ypsilanti, Mich. Ferris recorded eight top-eight performances in the meet.

FSU was led by sophomore Leanna Wolf’s fifth-place finish (2:18.98) in the 800 meters. Senior Crystal Kuzma took sixth place in both the 60-meter dash (8.15) and the long jump (15-10.50).

Junior Mary Miller placed seventh in the 3,000 meters (10:36.84), freshman Elizabeth Engle was seventh in the 60-meter hurdles (9.97) and freshman Jennifer Walsh took eighth place in the 60-meter hurdles (10.34). FSU also had two teams finish sixth (4:16.22) and seventh (4:18.92) in the 4x400-meter relay.

Selected student-athletes also competed in Friday’s (Feb. 13) Grand Valley State Mike Lints Laker Open in Allendale, Mich. Sophomore Jessica Gladding took third place in the shot put (38-1.50) and ninth in the weight throw (39-1) to lead the women’s team. Freshman Sonya White placed fifth in the shot put (36-8.50) and was 11th in the weight throw (35-0).

Ferris State will take part in the Central Michigan Jack Skoog Open this Friday (Feb. 20) in Mount Pleasant, Mich. The event is set for a 5 p.m. (EST) start.

Ferris Competes In Division II Team Challenge Meet

The Ferris State University women's track and field team took part in the Division II Team Challenge held Saturday (Feb. 7) at Saginaw Valley State's Ryder Center in University Center, Mich.

The Bulldogs posted 11 top-eight performances, including a first place (18:34.97) effort from junior Mary Miller in the 5,000 meters. Miller's time presently ranks third on Ferrris' all-time indoor chart.

Senior Rachel Cox placed third (18:42.71) in the 5,000 meters, senior Crystal Kuzma took third place (7.94) in the 60 meters and sophomore Jenny Irwin registered a third-place (5:11.30) finish in the mile run. Irwin also finished third (10:31.46) in the 3,000-meter run with the school's fourth-best all-time indoor mark.

Sophomore Leanna Wolf was sixth (2:21.89) in the 800 meters, sophomore Crystal Flutur captured seventh place (5:25.71) in the mile run and junior Michele Vanderhyde placed seventh (10-6) in the pole vault. Seniors Kristyn Buck and Michelle Blanch tied for eighth place (10-0) in the vault.

FSU also finished fifth (4:09.43) in the 4x400-meter relay.

The Bulldogs will take part in the Eastern Michigan Open this Saturday (Feb. 14) in Ypsilanti, Mich. The event is set for a 11 a.m. (EST) start.

Ferris Takes Part In Saginaw Valley State Invitational

The Ferris State University women's indoor track and field team took part in the 15th annual Saginaw Valley State Indoor Invitational held Friday (Jan. 23) in SVSU's Ryder Center at University Center, Mich.

Ferris recorded 11 top-eight performances in the women's competition highlighted by the Bulldogs' winning 4x800-meter relay team. The quartet of sophomores Geneva Jones, Crystal Flutur, Jenny Irwin and Leanna Wolf clocked a meet record time of 9:39.93 en route to a first-place finish.

Junior Mary Miller added a championship effort in the mile run with a time of 5:18.56.

Wolf placed fourth in the 400 meters (1:01.33), freshman Ashley Farr was fifth in the 200 meters (26.90) and senior Crystal Kuzma took sixth place in the 60 meters (8.21). Senior Molly Machinski finished eighth in the 60-meter hurdles (13.96).

In the field events, FSU senior Kristyn Buck tied for fifth place in the pole vault (10-6) while junior Michele Vanderhyde and senior Michelle Blanch both tied for seventh place in the event (10-0). Sophomore Jessica Gladding added a sixth-place performance in the shot put (38-4.50).

FSU also finished seventh in the women's 4x400-meter relay (4:18.53).

Ferris is idle until Saturday, Feb. 7, when the Bulldogs are slated to take part in the Division II Team Challenge at the Ryder Center in University Center. The meet is set to begin at 11 a.m. (EST).

Bulldogs Open Campaign At Grand Valley State Open

The Ferris State University women's indoor track and field team opened the 2003-04 campaign by taking part in Grand Valley State's Bob Eubanks Open held Friday (Jan. 16) evening in GVSU's Fieldhouse Arena at Allendale, Mich.

The Bulldog women's team registered 11 top-five finishes in the non-scoring event. Senior Kristyn Buck tied for first-place in the pole vault (10-6) while junior Michele VanderHyde and senior Michelle Blanch both tied for third place (10-0) in the same event.

Sophomore Jenny Irwin took championship honors in the 3,000-meter run (10:35.06), junior Mary Miller placed third in the 3,000 (10:41.16) and senior Rachel Cox captured fourth place (10:41.96) in the race.

Senior Crystal Kuzma recorded a second-place finish in the 55 meters (7.41), sophomore Jessica Gladding was third in the shot put (37-8.75) and sophomore Geneva Jones finished fourth in the 800-meter run (2:24.85). FSU senior Molly Machinski placed fifth in the 55 hurdles (9.14) and sophomore Crystal Flutur took fifth in the mile run (5:34.59).

Ferris State will return to action Friday, Jan. 23, by taking part in the Saginaw Valley State Invitational at University Center, Mich. The meet is set for a 5 p.m. (EST) start.
