Ferris State Notches Eight All-Academic Picks

Eight Ferris State University women's outdoor track and field athletes have been named to the 2001 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) All-Academic Team.

To be eligible to receive conference recognition, athletes had to be a major contributor during the season and post a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher.

The women's outdoor track and field squad featured FSU athletes Morgan Buckner, Katie Klaver, Alaina Olds, Pam Preston, Farrah Sewell, April Smith, Char Smith and Mackenzie Woodring.

Klaver posted the highest gpa for the Bulldog women as she earned a 3.94 average in the Ferris State nursing program. All eight FSU women's selections were 2001 GLIAC All-Academic Women's Indoor Track and Field Team selections.

Chapman Finishes Seventh at Nationals

Ferris State University junior Katie Chapman finished seventh overall in the final round of the 800-meter dash finals to earn her second All-America award Saturday night (May 26) at the 2001 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track Championships in Edwardsville, Ill.

One of two Bulldog athletes competing at the national meet, Chapman turned in a time of 2:15.00 in the 800-meter race at the University of Southern Illinois-Edwardsville’s 3,000-seat Ralph Korte Stadium.  Chapman advanced to the 800-meter dash finals with a second-place finish (2:12.25) in the third heat of the preliminary round Friday night (May 25) and had the ninth-fastest time overall heading into the final round.

Leva Zunda of Lewis (Ill.) claimed the 800-meter dash title as she clocked 2:05.19 in the final round.  Florencia Hunt of St. Augustine’s (N.C.) placed second (2:05.86) while Lache Bailey of San Francisco State finished third (2:10.05).

Entering the national meet, Chapman had the third-fastest seed time (2:07.62) of the 20 competitors.  She automatically qualified for the meet with a ninth-place finish (2:07.62) at the University of Tennessee’s Sea Ray Relays (April 13) in Knoxville, Tenn.  Chapman earned 2001 NCAA Division II Indoor All-America honors (March 10) with a seventh-place finish (2:14.49) in the 800-meter dash at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston, Mass.

Junior Farrah Sewell earned her third All-America award Thursday (May 24) with a fourth-place finish (168-1) in the hammer throw.  Senior Diandra Bauer of North Dakota State won the national title with a toss of 182-2, former national champion Janet Boettcher of Nebraska-Kearney placed second (179-9) and senior Cinnamon Rackley of San Francisco State finished third (173-2).

The three-day national meet, which concluded on Saturday, featured 310 athletes in 19 events. FSU scored seven points at the national meet.

Chapman Advances To 800-Meter Dash Finals

Ferris State University junior Katie Chapman advanced to the 800-meter dash finals with a time of 2:12.25 Friday night (May 25) at the 2001 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track Championships in Edwardsville, Ill.

One of two Bulldog athletes competing at the national meet, Chapman finished second overall in the third heat of the preliminary round at the University of Southern Illinois-Edwardsville’s 3,000-seat Ralph Korte Stadium. Chapman has the ninth-fastest time entering Saturday’s (May 26) 800-meter dash finals at 8:50 p.m. (EST).

Two Bulldogs Slated to Compete at NCAA Division II Championships

Two Ferris State University women's track athletes will compete in the 2001 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships (May 24-26) in Edwardsville, Ill.

Juniors Katie Chapman and Farrah Sewell are listed among the final championship meet entries and will contend for national titles at the University of Southern Illinois-Edwardsville's 3,000-seat Ralph Korte Stadium. The three-day meet features 310 athletes in 19 events.

During the 2001 outdoor campaign, Chapman placed first in the 800-meter race twice while Sewell won top honors in the hammer throw three times and earned 14 top-five finishes in the shot put, discus, hammer throw and javelin.

The Ferris State women's track squad finished fourth at the GLIAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships with 116.33 points under fifth-year head coach Jeff Kavalunas. FSU placed 24th overall at the national indoor meet as Chapman and Sewell scored a combined five points.

Award Winners Announced at Annual Team Banquet

The Ferris State University women's track program held its annual awards banquet on Saturday (May 12) at the Holiday Inn Hotel and Conference Center in Big Rapids, Mich.

Junior Katie Chapman was named the Most Outstanding women's track performer. A 2001 NCAA Division II Indoor All-American, Chapman automatically qualified for the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track Championships as she clocked a school-record time (2:07.62) in the 800-meter dash at the University of Tennessee's Sea Ray Relays (April 13) in Knoxville, Tenn. She captured the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) 800-meter dash championship (May 4) at FSU's Top Taggart Field to earn All-GLIAC honors.

Junior hammer thrower Farrah Sewell was voted the women's Most Outstanding Field Event Athlete. A 2000 NCAA Division II Outdoor All-American and 2001 NCAA Division II Indoor All-American, Sewell won the hammer throw three times during the outdoor season and reached the national provisional qualification mark with a toss of 154-8 at the Indianapolis (Ind.) Invitational (March 31).

The women's Most Improved Athlete Award was given to sophomore Adrianne Desenzio. Desenzio posted the second-best outdoor pole vault mark in school history with a performance of 10-9 at the Indianapolis Invitational. A provisional national qualifier, Desenzio earned All-GLIAC honors in the pole vault with a third-place effort at the GLIAC Championships.

Senior Julie Kovach was the Bulldog Award recipient. The award recognizes an individual for spirit, dedication, and leadership. Kovach notched seven top-five finishes in the jumping events during the 2000-01 indoor campaign.

The President's Awards for academic excellence was presented to junior Katie Klaver. A nursing major, Klaver earned GLIAC Indoor All-Academic recognition as she posted a 3.93 cumulative grade point average. She was was 12th overall (11:34.01) at the GLIAC Outdoor Championships in the 3,000-meter run.

The FSU women finished second at the GLIAC Indoor Championships and were fourth at the conference outdoor meet under fifth-year head coach Jeff Kavalunas. The NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships are slated for May 24-26 in Edwardsville, Ill. Besides Chapman, Sewell and Desenzio, freshman vaulter Susan Jadan and sophomore javelin thrower Jennifer Brogger have reached provisional qualification marks.


May 10

Bulldog Athletes Compete at Ferris State Open

Three Ferris State University women's track athletes competed in the Ferris State Open on Saturday (May 12) at Top Taggart Field in Big Rapids.

The last of four home meets this season, the open competition gave athletes a final chance to turn in season-best and national-qualifying performances. Athletes from nine schools took part in 18 events.

In the women's competition, sophomore Adrianne Desenzio leaped 33-0.50 as the only jumper in the triple jump. She also took second in the pole vault at 9-0. Sophomore Kristyn Buck vaulted 9-0 to win the pole vault and junior Farrah Sewell won the hammer throw with a toss of 167-2.50.

The Ferris State women's track squad has one individual qualifier and four provisional qualifiers for the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track Championships slated for May 24-26 in Edwardsville, Ill. Junior Katie Chapman is an automatic qualifier in the 800-meter run. The provisional qualifiers include sophomore javelin thrower Jennifer Brogger, freshman pole vaulter Susan Jadan, Sewell in the hammer throw and Desenzio in the pole vault. Final entries for the national meet will be released on Monday (May 14).

Bulldog Women Finish Fourth In Conference Meet

The Ferris State University women's track squad had three individual champions and finished fourth overall in the 2001 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Outdoor Track and Field Championships held on Friday (May 4) at Top Taggart Field in Big Rapids.

Junior middle distance standout Katie Chapman set a new meet record as she clocked 2:09.70 in winning the 800-meter dash. Teammate Morgan Buckner won the 100-meter high hurdles in a time of 14.60 and sophomore Jennifer Brogger claimed the javelin title with a toss of 109-11.75.

Grand Valley State won both the men's and women's titles. The Laker women scored 222 points.  Saginaw Valley State finished second with 130.33 points and Ashland was third with 125 total points. FSU compiled 116.33 points to edge Hillsdale for fourth place in the 21st annual nine-team women's meet.

Besides the three first-place finishers, four other Bulldogs earned all-conference honors by finishing among the top three performers in their respective events. Freshman Susan Jadan set a new school mark in the pole vault with a career-best effort of 11-0 to finish second. Junior All-American Farrah Sewell earned runner-up honors in the hammer throw with a performance of 164-11, sophomore Adrianne Desenzio was third in the pole vault at 10-6 and freshman Jennifer Delamater clocked 12.10 to finish third in the 100-meter dash.

In addition to the all-conference performers, the FSU women had nine other top-five finishers. Delamater was fourth overall in the 200-meter dash at 24.80, sophomore Kristyn Buck placed fourth in the pole vault at 10-0 and freshman Crystal Kuzma was fifth in the 100-meter dash in a time of 12.30. Senior Jamie Sollose took fourth in both the long jump at 18-1.25 and the triple jump with a leap of 36-10.50.

In the distance events, the Bulldogs received high finishes from two individuals. Junior April Smith was fifth in the 10,000-meter run in a time of 40:40.40 and senior Mackenzie Woodring finished fifth in the 5,000-meter run with a performance of 19:10.10. Both the 4x100-meter and 4x400-meter relay teams placed third overall.

Nine teams took part in the 2001 meet at Top Taggart Field. The meet marked the first time Ferris State had hosted the conference outdoor track championship since May 1, 1987.

The Bulldogs will host the Ferris State Open on Saturday (May 12) at Top Taggart Field at 11 a.m.

Bulldogs Finish Third In Home Quadrangular

The Ferris State University women's track squad finished third overall on Saturday (April 28) at the second annual United States Track Coaches Association (USTCA) Quadrangular held at Top Taggart Field in Big Rapids.

The Bulldog women scored 172 points and had six first-place finishes in their second home meet of the season. Grand Valley State won the women's division with 210.5 points.  Saginaw Valley State netted 203.5 total points to finish second and Northwood was fourth with 24 points.

Junior Morgan Buckner won the 100-meter hurdles in a personal-best time of 14.8 and claimed the high jump championship with a leap of 5-3 to lead the FSU women.  Teammate Farrah Sewell won the discus with a season-best toss of 139-9.75 and the hammer throw with a performance of 169-2.75.

Freshman Crystal Kuzma turned in a career-best time of 12.3 to win the 100-meter dash. Sophomore Jennifer Brogger won the javelin for the third-straight week with a heave of 121-10.

FSU had seven runner-up finishes. Junior All-American Katie Chapman placed second in the 400-meter dash with a time of 57.70, freshman Angela Herzog was second in the 800-meter run at 2:24.80 and senior Char Smith earned runner-up honors in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 20:24.20. Senior Jamie Sollose was second in the triple jump with a leap of 36-3.25, sophomore Adrianne Desenzio was the runner-up in the pole vault at 9-6 and the 4x100-meter relay squad clocked 48.10 in finishing second. The 4x400-meter relay quartet also finished second with a performance of 3:59.40.

Ferris State will host the 2001 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Friday (May 4) at Top Taggart Field. The field events are slated to start at 11 a.m. and the running events are scheduled for 11:30 a.m. FSU will also host the Ferris State Open on May 12 at 11 a.m.


April 23

Bulldog Women Place High at Indiana State Pacesetter Meet

The Ferris State University women's track squad registered eight top-five finishes at the Indiana State Pacesetter Invitational on Saturday (April 21) at Marks Field in Terre Haute, Ind.

Sophomore Adrianne Desenzio took runner-up honors in the pole vault to lead the Bulldog women. The meet featured eight NCAA Division I schools. Ferris State and Parkland College (Ill.) were the only non-Division I schools competing in the competition.

Both Desenzio and teammate Kristyn Buck vaulted 10-4. Desenzio took second place with fewer misses despite a career-best effort from Buck.

Senior Jamie Sollose finished third in the long jump with a leap of 17-6. She also was fourth in the triple jump at 37-2.50, breaking her own school record in the process. Desenzio placed ninth in the triple jump at 32-0 and 12th in the long jump at 13-11.

Junior Morgan Buckner was fifth overall in the high jump at 5-0.25. The multi-sport standout also earned seventh place in the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 15.17. Fellow hurdler Molly Manchinski was fifth in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles at 1:08.34 and ninth in the short hurdle race at 15.63. Sophomore Alaina Olds took sixth in the 400-meter hurdles at 1:08.42 and finished 10th in the 100-meter hurdles at 16.65.

All-American thrower Farrah Sewell was fifth in the hammer throw with a season-best toss of 171-11. She also finished 11th in the javelin at 96-9, was 12th in the discus at 124-6 and placed 13th in the shot put with a throw of 37-9.25.

Freshman Jennifer Delamater clocked 12.32 in the 100-meter dash to earn an eighth-place medal. In the 200-meter race, she finished 14th at 26.10. Teammate Crystal Kuzma was 11th in the 100-meter dash at 12.54 and 12th in the 200-meter race at 26.0.

The 4x100-meter relay team was fourth at 49.12 and the 4x400-meter relay squad was seventh at 4:15.28. Angela Herzog was ninth overall in the 800-meter run at 2:26.14. Sophomore Jessica Berube was seventh in the 400-meter hurdles at 1:09.73 and 13th in the javelin at 84-11.

Senior Mackenzie Woodring took 11th in the 1,500-meter run at 5:10.80 and junior Katie Klaver was 15th in a time of 5:30.70. In the 5,000-meter race, junior April Smith was 13th at 20:21.50, senior Pam Preston was 14th at 20:37.10 and senior Char Smith was 17th overall at 21:44.80.

Meanwhile, sophomore Jennifer Brogger took first place in the javelin with a throw of 125-5 at the Saginaw Valley Cardinal Open on Saturday, April 21. She was the only Bulldog to compete in that meet.

Ferris State is scheduled to host the United States Track Coaches Association (USTCA) Quadrangular on April 28 and the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championships on May 4 at Top Taggart Field.

Brogger Reaches NCAA Qualifying Mark at Saginaw Meet

Sophomore thrower Jennifer Brogger provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships with a first-place finish in the javelin at the Saginaw Valley State Collegiate Invitational on Saturday (April 14) in University Center, Mich.

Brogger, a two-sport standout at Ferris State in basketball and track, won the event and posted the second-best mark in school history with a personal-best toss of 131-4. The FSU women had two champions and eight top-five finishes in the non-scoring meet, which featured athletes from 20 schools.

In addition to Brogger, freshman Jennifer Delamater won the 100-meter dash as she clocked 12.75. She took runner-up honors in the 200-meter dash in a time of 26.70 and the 4x100-meter relay squad was second at 48.62.

In the pole vault, Ferris State captured three of the top eight places. Sophomore Adrianne Desenzio was third at 10-6, freshman Susan Jadan was fifth at 10-0 and Kristyn Buck placed eighth with a vault of 9-0.

Senior Mackenzie Woodring finished fourth in the 3,000-meter race at 11:13.44. Jumper Jamie Sollose was fifth in the triple jump with a leap of 35-9. Freshman Crystal Kuzma placed sixth in the 100-meter race at 13.15. Sophomore Jessica Berube took eighth in the javelin at 78-2.

The Bulldogs won three medals in the hurdles events. Freshman Molly Manchinski was sixth in the 100-meter high hurdles at 15.98 and seventh in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles in a time of 1:10.18. Sophomore Alaina Olds took sixth in the long hurdle race as she was timed at 1:09.14.

Several other Ferris State athletes earned medals competing unattached. On Friday, three Bulldog women took part in the prestigious Sea Ray Relays at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, Tenn. Junior Katie Chapman set a new school record in the 800-meter run and automatically qualified for the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships as she was ninth overall at 2:07.62 on the Tom Black track. Junior Farrah Sewell placed 12th overall in the hammer throw on Friday morning with a toss of 162-8 and hurdler Morgan Buckner finished 43rd overall in the 100-meter high hurdles in a time of 15.28.

Four women's athletes have now qualified for the May 24-26 national meet in Edwardsville, Ill. Besides Brogger and Chapman, Desenzio and Sewell have also met qualifying marks. Desenzio is a provisional qualifier in the pole vault while Sewell has provisionally qualified in the hammer throw.

Both the FSU men and women's squads will take part in the Indiana State Pacesetter Invitational on Saturday (April 21) in Terre Haute, Ind. Ferris State is scheduled to host the United States Track Coaches Association (USTCA) Quadrangular on April 28 and the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championships on May 4 at Top Taggart Field.

Chapman Breaks School Record at Sea Ray Relays

Ferris State University junior Katie Chapman set a new school record in the 800-meter run and automatically qualified for the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships as she posted an impressive performance in the event at the prestigious Sea Ray Relays on Friday (April 13) evening at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, Tenn.

Chapman finished third in section three of the 50-competitor event and was ninth overall as she clocked 2:07.62 on the Tom Black track. Her time in the half-mile was the best non-NCAA Division I finish. Hazel Clark of Team Nike won the race with a time of 2:03.19. Three of the top six finishers were from the University of Florida.

Junior Farrah Sewell placed 12th overall in the hammer throw on Friday morning with a toss of 162-8. A returning NCAA Division II Outdoor All-American, Sewell was seventh in the third flight of the competition. The top 11 finishers in the 34-competitor event were from NCAA Division I schools or were members of track clubs.

Hurdler Morgan Buckner finished 43rd overall in the 100-meter high hurdles in a time of 15.28. She placed sixth in the sixth section of the race during the afternoon session.

In finishing ninth overall, Chapman broke the previous outdoor school record of 2:11.01 set in 1994 by former All-American Lori Edinger. Chapman earned indoor All-American honors at the NCAA Division II Championships in March as she placed seventh overall. The 2001 NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships are slated for May 24-26 in Edwardsville, Ill.

Regarded as one of the premier events on the collegiate level, the 35th annual Sea Ray Relays is the nation's biggest meet of the weekend.  Athletes from over 60 NCAA Division I schools and from all levels are listed among the meet entries. The meet is hosted by the Volunteer track program at Tennessee. The meet began on Wednesday and runs through Saturday (April 14).

The meet features competition in all NCAA-sanctioned events and several other events staged at the international level. The Tom Black Track has been the site of several other major events in the past decade including the Southeastern Conference Championships, the USA Track and Field Championships and the NCAA Championships.

Buckner, Sewell and Chapman were the only three FSU competitors taking part in the event. The remaining members of the Bulldog men's and women's programs will take part in the Saginaw Valley State Invitational on Saturday in University Center, Mich. Ferris State is scheduled to host the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championships on May 4 at Top Taggart Field.


April 12

Three Bulldogs Slated to Compete in Sea Ray Relays

Three members of the Ferris State University women's track squad are slated to compete in the prestigious Sea Ray Relays on Friday (April 13) at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, Tenn.

Senior Morgan Buckner, junior Katie Chapman and junior Farrah Sewell are listed among the athletes from 117 different schools scheduled to participate in the 35th annual four-day event at the Tom Black Track. The meet began on Wednesday (April 11) and runs through Saturday (April 14).

Sewell will be the first Bulldog competitor as she is scheduled to take part in the hammer throw on Friday at 9 a.m. A returning NCAA Division II Outdoor All-American in the event, Sewell will be the second thrower in the third flight of the competition. A total of 33 competitors are slated to take part in the hammer throw. Sewell provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track Championships on March 31 at the Indianapolis Invitational. Last weekend, she threw a season-best 163-4 as she finished first at the Bulldog Invitational at Top Taggart Field in Big Rapids.

Buckner, a two-sport standout at Ferris State in volleyball and track, will compete in the 100-meter high hurdles on Friday at 3 p.m. She will run in lane five of the seventh section and is one of 50 women's athletes in the event. At the Indianapolis Invitational, Buckner posted the third-fastest time in school history as she clocked 15.02.

Chapman will take part in the 800-meter run on Friday at 7:20 p.m. She will start from the ninth spot in section three of the event. The 50 competitors listed on the official meet entry form have been placed in five sections. Chapman provisionally qualified for the national meet last Saturday with a winning-time of 2:14.16 at the Bulldog Invitational. She earned indoor All-American honors in early March as she finished seventh at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track Championships in Boston, Mass.

Ferris Posts Impressive Performances In Bulldog Invitational

The Ferris State University women's track squad won 10 events and set four meets records in its home-opening invitational on Saturday (April 7) at Top Taggart Field in Big Rapids.

Although team scores were not kept, Ferris State won 10 of 21 events in the women's competition at the five-team Bulldog Invitational. In addition, junior middle distance standout Katie Chapman became the third Ferris State individual to provisionally qualify for the 2001 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships as she clocked 2:14.16 in winning the 800-meter dash.

Junior Morgan Buckner won the 100-meter hurdles in a meet-record time of 15.54. Returning All-American thrower Farrah Sewell captured the women's hammer throw title with a record heave of 163-4. Ferris State also set a meet record in the 4x100-meter relay as the Bulldogs clocked 49.18. The other meet record was set by sophomore pole vaulter Adrianne Desenzio who topped 10-6.

Freshman Jennifer Delamater won a pair of individual events. She won the 100-meter dash in a time of 12.78 and the 200-meter dash at 26.46. Teammate Crystal Kuzma placed second in both events with times of 12.99 and 26.87.

In the distance events, the Bulldogs received strong performances from junior April Smith and senior Mackenzie Woodring. Smith won the 10,000-meter run in a time of 41:30.38 while Woodring won the 5,000-meter race at 19:02.35. FSU also won the 4x400-meter relay in a time of 4:04.95.

Sewell placed in four individual events for the second meet in a row. Besides winning the hammer throw, she was third in the discus (128-5), fourth in the javelin (88-5) and fourth in the shot put (38-7).

Sophomore Jennifer Brogger finished second in the javelin with a toss of 117-5 in her first meet of the year. Freshman Molly Manchinski was second in the 100-meter hurdles at 16.51 and third in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles with a time of 1:09.06. Sophomore Alaina Olds finished second in the intermediate hurdles at 1:06.32 and third in the short hurdles at 16.61.

Senior Jamie Sollose was third in both the long jump (17-3) and the triple jump (35-3). Angela Herzog was third in the 800-meter run at 2:25.31, junior Katie Klaver was third in the 3,000-meter run in a time of 11:55.19 and Pam Preston was third in the 10,000-meter race at 42:49.86 as FSU had eight third-place finishes overall.

FSU is coached by Jeff Kavalunas.  The Bulldogs will compete in the Saginaw Valley State Invitational on Saturday (April 14) at University Center, Mich. FSU will host the USTCA Quadrangular on April 28 at Top Taggart Field.

Bulldog Women Finish Second at Indianapolis Invitational

The Ferris State University women's track squad kicked off the 2001 outdoor campaign on Saturday (March 31) at the Gerald England Track Invitational in Indianapolis, Ind.

The Bulldog women finished second overall with 134 points as the University of Indianapolis won its own meet at Key Stadium with 158 points. Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) rival Saginaw Valley State was third with 120 points and St. Joseph's (Ind.) finished fourth with 109 points.

Ferris State had three first-place individual finishers and two provisional national qualifiers in the women's competition. Freshman Jennifer Delamater won the 100-meter dash in a time of 12.53, junior Morgan Buckner captured the 100-meter hurdles at 15.02 and senior Jamie Sollose took top honors in the long jump with a leap of 17-5.50. In winning the 100-meter hurdles, Buckner posted the third-best outdoor time in school history. FSU also won the 4x100-meter relay in a time of 48.48.

Sophomore Adrianne Desenzio and junior Farrah Sewell each reached provisional qualification standards for the NCAA Division II National Outdoor Track Championships to be held May 24-26 in Edwardsville, Ill. Desenzio set a new school record as she reached the standard in the pole vault with a performance of 10-9. Sewell, an indoor All-American this season in the weight toss, finished second in the hammer throw and met the qualification mark with a toss of 154-8.

Sewell had a big day for the Bulldogs as she placed in four events and scored 23 points. In addition to placing second in the hammer throw, she was third in the javelin (101-0), fourth in the shot put (37-11) and fifth in the discus (123-01).

Delamater took second in the 200-meter dash in a time of 27.05, junior Katie Chapman was third in the 1,500-meter race at 4:54.41, senior Mackenzie Woodring was fourth in the 3,000-meter run at 10:52.30 and Kristyn Buck was fourth in the pole vault at 9-6. Sophomore Molly Machinski placed third in the 100-meter hurdles at 16.17 and fourth in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles at 1:08.93.

Besides winning the short hurdles, Buckner took third place in the high jump at 5-2. Sophomore Jessica Berube was fifth in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles at 1:10.34, Sollose finished second in the triple jump at 31-2 and Crystal Kuzma was third in the 100-meter race at 12.80. The Bulldog women had 19 top-five finishes.

Ferris State will host the Bulldog Invitational on Saturday (April 7) at 10 a.m. at Top Taggart Field in Big Rapids.

March 29

Thirteen Bulldogs Earn All-Academic Honors

Thirteen Ferris State University indoor track and field athletes have been named to the 2001 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) All-Academic indoor track and field teams for their outstanding performance as student-athletes this past season.

Only three GLIAC women's track programs had more athletes named to the list than Ferris State. The women's indoor squad includes Bulldogs Jessica Berube, Morgan Buckner, Carla Buechler, Adrianne Desenzio, Katie Klaver, Julie Kovach, Alaina Olds, Pam Preston, Farrah Sewell, April Smith, Char Smith, Michelle Terry and Mackenzie Woodring.

Desenzio and Klaver both led the Bulldog women's team with 3.93 grade point averages. A standout pole vaulter, Desenzio earned her average as a math education major. Klaver is in the nursing program at Ferris State.

In addition to Desenzio and Klaver, Berube compiled a 3.71 GPA in criminal justice, Buckner had a 3.80 in recreation leadership management, Buechler posted a 3.28 GPA in industrial/environmental health management and Kovach held a 3.01 average in computer network systems.

A two-sport athlete, Olds holds a 3.78 GPA in elementary education. Preston is also in the elementary education field where she earned a 3.36 GPA. April Smith compiled a 3.84 average in psychology, Char Smith earned a 3.07 in hotel management, Terry had a 3.06 in health care systems administration and Woodring put together a 3.07 GPA in the product design engineering technology program.

Sewell made the squad with a 3.11 average in health care systems administration. She earned her second All-American honor this past season as she placed sixth at the NCAA Division II National Indoor Championships in Boston, Mass. Teammate Katie Chapman also received All-American honors as she was seventh in the 800-meter dash.

Ferris State will host four outdoor meets at Top Taggart Field in Big Rapids this season. Among those four meets is the GLIAC Outdoor Championships on May 4. FSU is coached by Jeff Kavalunas.

Two Bulldogs Earn All-American Honors at National Indoor Meet

Ferris State University women's indoor track standouts Katie Chapman and Farrah Sewell earned All-American honors with impressive performances at the NCAA Division II National Indoor Track Championships held this weekend (March 9-10) in Boston, Mass.

Prior to the meet, Ferris State had not had two athletes earn All-American honors in the same season since 1992. They are among nine women's track athletes ever to earn indoor All-American honors at Ferris State and are the first competitors to earn indoor All-American recognition in the five-year tenure of head coach Jeff Kavalunas.

Sewell, a junior, garnered All-American honors for the second time as she placed sixth in the 20-pound weight throw with a toss of 56-7.25 on Friday night (March 9) at the Reggie Lewis Center. A sophomore, Chapman finished seventh in the 800-meter run in a time of 2:14.49 to earn her first All-American award on Saturday (March 10). As a duo, the pair led Ferris State to a 24th-place team finish with five points.

In the weight throw, Sewell broke her own indoor school record in the event on her second throw of the competition to score three points. Entering the meet, she had the sixth-best toss of the year at 56-6.50. A total of 13 athletes competed in the event. Diandra Bauer of North Dakota State won the event with a top throw of 60-8.75. Sewell placed the highest of the four Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) throwers competing in the meet. Last season, Sewell placed fifth in the hammer throw at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships to become the 20th All-American in the history of the women's track program at Ferris State.

Chapman qualified for Saturday's finals by placing fifth in the first heat of the preliminary round on Friday night in a time of 2:15.98. She was one of 13 qualifiers in the 800-meter race and had the fourth-fastest time heading into the national meet at 2:11.92. She became only the second athlete in school history to automatically qualify for the national indoor meet as she placed seventh in the 800-meter race and set a new school record in the event at the Cannon IV Classic on Feb. 10 at Indianapolis, Ind.

Besides earning All-American honors, both Sewell and Chapman were also named to the 2001 All-GLIAC women's indoor track squad after posting impressive performances at the GLIAC Indoor Track and Field Championships on Feb. 25 at Findlay, Ohio. Sewell earned one of two first-place finishes for the Bulldogs as she claimed the top conference spot in the weight toss at 55-5.50. Chapman was one of four athletes to earn runner-up medals for FSU at the meet as she turned in a time of 2:14.55 in the 800-meter race.

During the 2000-01 indoor campaign, Chapman won the 800-meter race twice and ranked among the top five in the 400-meter dash four times.  Sewell won the weight toss in six of the eight meets she competed in during the regular season. She also placed in the shot put eight times.

The two-day national indoor meet featured 154 athletes competing for national titles in 13 events. The Bulldogs will kick off the outdoor season on March 31 at the Indianapolis Invitational in Indianapolis, Ind. Ferris State will host four outdoor meets this season at Top Taggart Field including the GLIAC Outdoor Championships on May 4.

At the GLIAC Indoor meet, Chapman finished second to Andrea Morgan of Findlay. Morgan is also listed among the 13 national qualifiers with a top performance of 2:13.51. Lana Jekabsone of Lewis (Ill.) has the best time entering the national meet at 2:07.40.

In the 20-pound weight toss, Diandra Bauer of North Dakota State has the top throw of 62-0.25 entering the competition at the Reggie Lewis Center. Former national champion Janet Boettcher of Nebraska-Kearney is second in the event at 59-11. Sewell is one of six athletes who has thrown in the 56-to-57 foot range.

During the 2000-01 indoor campaign, Chapman won the 800-meter race twice and ranked among the top five in the 400-meter dash four times.  Sewell won the weight toss in six of the eight meets she competed in this season. She also placed in the shot put eight times.

Four other Ferris State athletes reached provisional qualification standards but were not selected to compete at the national meet. Pole vaulters Adrianne Desenzio and Susan Jadan, 55-meter hurdler Morgan Buckner and 55-meter sprinter Jennifer Delamater all narrowly missed making the national field. Only 12 athletes were listed among the national entries in the pole vault. In both the 55-meter hurdles and the 55-meter dash, 14 individuals made the indoor championship list. All four provisional qualifiers were also All-GLIAC picks.

The Ferris State women's track squad finished second at the GLIAC Indoor Track and Field Championships with 93.50 points and recorded the highest indoor finish in the five-year tenure of head coach Jeff Kavalunas.


Feb. 26

Bulldogs Claim All-Conference Indoor Track Honors

Six Ferris State University women's track athletes have been named to the 2001 All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) team. The All-GLIAC squad was announced on Saturday at the GLIAC Indoor Track and Field Championships in Findlay, Ohio.

The six Bulldogs named to the squad included Morgan Buckner, Farrah Sewell, Katie Chapman, Susan Jadan, Adrianne Desenzio and Jennifer Delamater. Delamater was also recognized as the GLIAC Freshman of the Year as she helped lead the Ferris State women to a runner-up finish at the Malcolm Athletic Center.

Delamater finished second in the 200-meter dash, placed third in the 55-meter dash at 7.25 and was ninth in the long jump at 17-0.50. The Edmore native notched 14 top five finishes in the three events during the 2000-01 indoor campaign to garner the Freshman of the Year award. Her time of 26.12 in the 200-meter race at the GLIAC meet is the fourth-fastest time in FSU history.

Feb. 25

Bulldog Women Finish Second at GLIAC Indoor Meet

The Ferris State University women's track squad finished second at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Indoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday (Feb. 24) at the Malcolm Athletic Center in Findlay, Ohio.

The Bulldogs had two first-place finishes and totaled 93.50 points. Arch-rival Grand Valley State won the team championship with 177 points. Findlay was third with 89 points while Ashland (Ohio) was fourth with 88.50 points.

Junior standout Morgan Buckner won the 55-meter hurdles in a fieldhouse record time of 8.36 to lead FSU. Returning All-American Farrah Sewell had the other first-place finish for the Bulldogs as she claimed the 20-pound weight throw championship with a toss of 55-5.50. FSU had 12 top five finishes.

Four Bulldogs earned runner-up medals. Freshman Jennifer Delamater finished second in the 200-meter dash in a time of 26.12. Middle distance standout Katie Chapman placed second in the 800-meter run in a time of 2:14.55. In the pole vault, freshman Susan Jadan and sophomore Adrianne Desenzio both vaulted 10-4.75 to tie for the runner-up spot.

Besides finishing second in the 200-meter dash, Delamater was third in the 55-meter dash in a time of 7.25. Teammate Crystal Kuzma placed fourth at 7.39. In the 55-meter hurdles, freshman Molly Machinski finished fifth at 8.73 while Alaina Olds was seventh at 9.03.

In the distance races, Ferris State picked up a sixth-place finish in the 3,000-meter race from Mackenzie Woodring and a ninth-place finish in the 5,000-meter race from April Smith. Woodring clocked 10:54.29 while Smith turned in a time of 19:31.77.

Senior Jamie Sollose placed in a pair of events. She was sixth in the long jump with a leap of 17-9.50 and fourth in the triple jump at 36-1.50. Sewell finished sixth in the shot put (39-0.50). The Bulldogs were fifth in the 4x800-meter relay (10:00.63) and sixth in the 4x400-meter relay (4:12.78).


Feb. 19

Sophomore pole vaulter Adrianne Desenzio won the pole vault for the first time this season and set a new school record to claim the only first-place finish for the Ferris State women's indoor track squads at the Jack Skoog Open in Mount Pleasant on Friday (Feb. 16).

Desenzio vaulted a personal-best 10-11.50 to break her own school mark of 10-6 set on Feb. 10 at the Cannon IV Classic in Indianapolis, Ind. She has improved her performance in each of the seven meets she has competed in this season. On Feb. 2, she provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division II National Indoor Meet with a vault of 10-4 at the USTCA Team Challenge in University Center, Mich.

The Bulldog women had 16 top five finishes in the meet hosted by Central Michigan University at the Jack Skoog Indoor Track. While Desenzio was the only first-place finisher, returning All-American thrower Farrah Sewell earned a runner-up medal for the FSU women. She took second in the 20-pound weight throw with a toss of 52-8.75.

"We had some good performances," head coach Jeff Kavalunas said. "A couple of athletes moved up in the conference rankings so we are pleased about that."

Freshman Crystal Kuzma was named the outstanding Bulldog female athlete of the meet as she placed in two events. In the 200-meter dash, Kuzma placed fourth in a personal-best time of 26.74. She finished fifth in the 60-meter dash at 7.99.

The Ferris State women's squad had eight third-place finishes. Junior multi-sport standout Morgan Buckner was third in both the 60-meter high hurdles (9.09) and the high jump (5-2.25). Her converted time of 8.52 in the high hurdles ranks third on the all-time indoor chart at Ferris State.

Freshman Jennifer Delamater placed third in the 60-meter dash (7.92), senior Mackenzie Woodring finished third in the mile at 5:32.80 and junior distance runner April Smith clocked 11:19.26 to earn third-place in the 3,000-meter run. Freshman Susan Jadan was one of three Bulldogs to place in the pole vault as she finished third overall with a vault of 10-5.50.

Ferris State will take part in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championships on Saturday (Feb. 24) at Findlay, Ohio.


Feb. 12

Bulldogs Set Three School Records at Cannon IV Classic

The Ferris State University women's track squad set three school records at the Cannon IV Classic this past weekend (Feb. 9-10) at Butler University in Indianapolis, Ind. The two-day open field included athletes from both NCAA Division I and II institutions.

Junior middle distance standout Katie Chapman became the second athlete in school history to automatically qualify for the NCAA Division II National Indoor Championships as she placed seventh in the 800-meter dash in a school-record time of 2:11.92. The Detroit/Cass Tech product has won the 800-meter race all three times she has ran it this season.

Sophomore Adrianne Desenzio set a new school record in the pole vault with a career-best vault of 10-6 as she finished 10th overall. Last week, she provisionally qualified for the national meet with a vault of 10-4 at the USTCA Team Challenge in University Center, Mich. Desenzio has improved her performance in the vault in each meet this season.

Returning All-American thrower Farrah Sewell was the highest Bulldog finisher as she placed fourth in the 20-pound weight toss with a school-record throw of 56-6.50. Sewell had finished first in the event in the previous five meets this season.

Besides setting three school records, the Bulldogs also had several other outstanding performances. Freshman Jennifer Delamater placed 22nd overall in the 60-meter dash (8.04) and was 23rd in the 200-meter dash in a time of 26.27. Senior Mackenzie Woodring was 43rd in the 3,000-meter race in a season-best time of 10:49.02.

In the 60-meter hurdles, junior standout Morgan Buckner finished 18th as she clocked 9.20. Freshman Susan Jadan was 12th in the pole vault at 10-0.

Desenzio and Sewell both competed in two events. Desenzio placed 17th in the long jump with a leap of 16-11.25 and Sewell was 14th in the shot put with a toss of 39-03. Only seven Bulldog athletes competed in the meet.

Both the Ferris State men's and women's track squads will return to action on Friday (Feb. 16) at the Central Michigan Open in Mount Pleasant. Both squads will take part in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championships on Feb. 24 at Findlay, Ohio.


Feb. 8

Four Bulldog Women Reach National Indoor Meet Qualifying Marks

Four members of the Ferris State University women's indoor track squad have reached provisional qualification standards for the 2001 NCAA Division II National Indoor Track Championships to be held on March 9-10 in Boston, Mass.

The four qualifiers include returning All-American thrower Farrah Sewell, junior middle distance standout Katie Chapman and pole vaulters Adrianne Desenzio and Susan Jadan. The quartet represents the largest number of Bulldog qualifiers in the five years head coach Jeff Kavalunas has been at Ferris State.

Sewell reached the provisional mark and broke her own school record in the 20-pound weight throw with a toss of 54-04.50 at the Grand Valley State Open in Allendale on Jan. 26. Her toss at the Grand Valley State Open is the eighth-best Division II toss of the year and was well beyond the provisional qualifying standard of 49-0.25. She has finished first in all five FSU meets this season.

Two years ago, Sewell earned a ninth-place medal in the weight toss at the 1999 NCAA Division II National Indoor Championships in Indianapolis, Ind. The junior earned her first All-American award with a fifth-place finish in the hammer throw at the national outdoor meet a year ago in Raleigh, N.C.

A junior, Chapman provisionally qualified for the national meet with a first-place finish in the 800-meter dash at the Grand Valley State Open. Her time of 2:16.37 is the 12th-best time in the nation and is the fifth-fastest indoor mark in school history. Chapman has won the 800-meter race both times she has competed in the event this season.

At the USTCA Team Challenge in University Center on Feb. 2, Desenzio and Jadan each broke the school record of 10-0 in the pole vault and met the provisional qualifying standard with personal-best marks of 10-4. Desenzio, a sophomore, took runner-up honors at the meet while Jadan, a freshman, finished third. The duo has placed among the top four in all five meets this season.

Under Kavalunas, the Ferris State women have tied or set seven meet records in the past two weeks. In five indoor meets, the Bulldogs have 18 first-place finishes.

Both the Ferris State men's and women's track squads are slated to compete in the Cannon IV Classic this weekend (Feb. 9-10) in Indianapolis, Ind. The Bulldogs will also compete in the Central Michigan Open in Mount Pleasant on Feb. 16 before heading to the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Indoor Championships on Feb. 24 at Findlay, Ohio.


Feb. 6

The Ferris State women's track squad finished third at the USTCA Team Challenge at the Ryder Center in University Center on Feb. 2.  The Bulldogs scored 219.50 points to trail Saginaw Valley State and Grand Valley State.

FSU had three first-place finishes in the six-team meet.  Freshman Jennifer Delamater won the 60-meter dash for the third time this season as she clocked 7.92 in a meet-record time. Multi-sport standout Morgan Buckner won the 60-meter high hurdles for the second-straight week as she tied the meet record of 9.18.  In the 20-pound weight throw, returning All-American Farrah Sewell threw 53-0.5 to break the previous meet record. Sewell has won the weight toss in all five meets this season.

Ferris State had 21 top-five finishes.  In the pole vault, sophomore Andy Desenzio and freshman Susan Jadan both reached NCAA Division II provisional qualification standards as each vaulted 10-04.  Desenzio was second and Jadan was third as both broke the previous school record.  Katie Champman was second in the 400-meter dash in a season-best time of 59.30. Mackenzie Woodring was second in the 3,000-meter run as she clocked 11:01.24. The Bulldogs placed second in both the 4x400-meter and 4x800-meter relays.  Jamie Sollose ws second in two events as she leaped 17-05 in the long jump and 34-03 in the triple jump to take the runner-up spot in each event.

FSU will take part in the Cannon IV Classic on Feb. 9-10 in Indianapolis, Ind.  The Bulldogs are slated to compete in the Central Michigan Open in Mount Pleasant on Feb. 16.


Jan. 31

The Ferris State University women's track team set four indoor meet records on Friday (Jan. 26) at the GVSU Fieldhouse in Allendale. Juniors Morgan Buckner, Katie Chapman and Farrah Sewell set new Grand Valley State Open standards as did senior Jamie Sollose.

According to Ferris State track and field coach Jeff Kavalunas, the results were very impressive.  "It was pretty exciting to see those athletes turn in conference-leading performances," he said.

Buckner, also a member of the Bulldog volleyball squad, won the 55-meter hurdles in a time of 8.61.  In the process, she tied the fifth-best indoor mark in FSU history. Chapman ran the 800-meter run in a career-best 2:16.37 to meet NCAA Division II provisional qualification standards and post the fifth-best indoor 800-meter mark in school history.  Sewell turned in a toss of 54-4.5 in the 20-pound weight throw to set a new school record and also provisionally qualify for the national meet. In the triple jump, Sollose went 34-6 to claim first-place.  All were meet records.

Sophomore Andy Desenzio and freshman Susan Jadan each tied the school record in the pole vault with a vault of 10-0. Desenzio finished second while Jadan placed fourth. Desenzio also placed second in the long jump (17-07.25) and third in the triple jump (32-11.50). For her efforts, Desenzio was named the squad¹s female performer of-the-week. Jennifer Delamater, a freshman, placed first in the 200 meter dash (27.46), third in the 55 meter dash (7.41) and third in the long jump (17-07.00).  Delamater was one of seven Bulldogs to finish in the top 12 in the 200-meter race.

Other standout performances for the Bulldog women were turned in by freshman Crystal Kuzma and senior Julie Kovach. Kuzma placed second in the 200-meter dash (28.35) while Kovach was the runner-up in the triple jump with a leap of 33-10.50.  FSU had the top three finishers in the triple jump.  The Bulldogs placed among the top five in 13 events and had six first-place finishes.

Ferris State will compete in the USTCA Quadrangular on Friday (Feb. 2) at Saginaw Valley State University in University Center.


 

Jan. 23

The Ferris State women's track squad competed at the 12th annual Saginaw Valley State Cardinal Indoor Open at the James E. O'Neill Arena in University Center on Jan. 19.  The Bulldogs picked up 17 medals.

FSU had four first-place finishes.  Freshman Jennifer Delameter won the 60-meter dash in a time of 7.96.  Junior Morgan Buckner won the 60-meter hurdles at 9.31.  Junior distance runner Katie Chapman captured the 800-meter run title as she clocked 2:19.39. Senior thrower Farrah Sewell took the top spot in the 20-pound weight throw for the third time this season with a toss of 51-0.5.

Ferris State had three runner-up finishes as Buckner was second in the high jump at 5-0, freshman Susan Jadan was second in the pole vault at 10-0 and freshman Crystal Kuzma was second in the 60-meter dash at 8.14.  FSU placed in 11 of 16 events.  Buckner, Sewell, senior jumper Julie Kovach and sophomore vaulter/jumper Andy Desenzio each placed in two individual events.  The Bulldogs will take part in the Grand Valley State Open on Friday in Allendale.


Jan. 16

The Ferris State women's track squad had six first-place finishes in 14 events in a dual at Grand Valley State in Allendale Jan. 12. The Lakers won nine events on their way to a 78-57 win over FSU. Freshman Jennifer Delamater took top honors in both the 55-meter dash (7.42) and the 200-meter dash (26.71). Her time of 7.42 in the 55-meter dash is the fifth-best indoor mark in school history.

Returning All-American Farrah Sewell won the weight throw with a toss of 51-08 1/2 and was second in the shot put at 39-07. She also placed in both events in the first meet of the season at the Saginaw Valley State Holiday Indoor Classic. Multi-sport standout Morgan Buckner won the 55-meter hurdles in a time of 8.76 and was the runner-up in the high jump at 5-2.

Senior Jamie Sollose won the triple jump with a leap of 34-1 3/4. In the pole vault, freshman Susan Jaden set a school record with a first-place vault of 10-0. Katie Chapman was second in the 400-meter dash (1:00.53) for the second-straight meet and sophomore Andrianne Desenzio was the runner-up in the long jump at 17-08. Julie Kovach was second in the triple jump at 33-3 1/2.

FSU will compete in the Saginaw Valley State Invitational on Jan. 19.


Dec. 14, 2000

The Ferris State University women's indoor track squad opened the 2000-01 campaign at the Saginaw Valley State Holiday Indoor Classic (Dec. 8) at the James E. O'Neill, Jr. Arena in University Center, Mich. FSU came home from the meet with 21 top-eight finishes as the Bulldogs placed in 10 of 16 events.

Junior Farrah Sewell earned the only first-place medal for the Bulldogs as she took the top spot in the 20-pound weight throw with a toss of 53-9. In winning the weight throw, Sewell also broke her own indoor school mark of 53-1. Teammate Carla Buechler finished second in the event with a personal-best throw of 46-11 1/2.

FSU had six runner-up finishes. Seven Bulldogs placed in at least two individual events. Senior Jamie Sollose finished second in both the long jump and the triple jump and was seventh in the 60-meter race. She recorded the fifth-best all-time indoor mark in the long jump at Ferris State with a jump of 18-3 1/2.

Sewell and Buechler both earned two medals. Sewell was second in the shot put and Buechler finished third. Freshman Jennifer Delamater was second in the 60-meter dash and third in the 200-meter dash. Crystal Kuzma finished fourth in the 200-meter dash and was third in the 60-meter race. Sophomore Adrianne Desenzio was fourth in the pole vault and sixth in the 200-meter dash. Senior Julie Kovach placed sixth in the long jump and third in the triple jump. Junior Katie Chapman took runner-up honors in the 400-meter dash.

Ferris State will return to action on Jan. 12 as the Bulldogs travel to Allendale to face Grand Valley State in a dual. FSU will head back to University Center Jan. 19 to take part in the Saginaw Valley State Invitational.
