TWO FERRIS TRACK ATHLETES HEADED TO NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
Two FSU Women's Athletes Among Participants For National Meet This Week
Two student-athletes will represent Ferris State University in the 2008 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships, which will be held later this week (May 22-24) in Walnut, Calif.
Senior thrower Kamitra Carroll (Flint/Carman-Ainsworth) and freshman jumper Marva Goodson (Saginaw/Bridgeport) of the FSU women's outdoor track and field squad were among the final meet participants recently announced by the NCAA Division II Men’s and Women’s Track and Field Committee. The pair will join more than 600 other student-athletes who qualified for the meet by reaching the automatic or provisional standards established for each event. The top eight finishers in each event will earn All-America recognition.

FSU senior long jumper Amy Woodman (Bristol, U.K.) also qualified for the national meet, but will not participate because she has not met the University’s expectations and standards as a student-athlete.
The meet will be held at Hilmer Lodge Stadium on the campus of Mount San Antonio College and hosted by the University of Cal-Poly Pomona.
Carroll will represent the Bulldogs in two events, including both the shot put and hammer throw competitions. In the shot put, Carroll's best toss (48-4) this year is fifth of the 18 student-athletes slated to compete Friday (May 23) at 5:55 p.m. (PDT). Her seed mark (177-4) in the hammer throw is listed ninth overall of 19 throwers. The women's shot put competition will be held Thursday (May 22) at 5:45 p.m. (PDT). Carroll will throw in the second of two flights in both events with the top nine throwers overall advancing to the final-round competition.
Meanwhile, Goodson has been chosen to participate in the long jump at the national meet. She holds the nation's 10th-best overall performance (19-5.25) heading into Thursday's (May 22) event, which begins at 6 p.m. (PDT). Goodson will compete in the first of two preliminary flights with the top nine jumpers advancing to the final round the same evening.
Carroll received 2008 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Outdoor Field Event Athlete of the Year recognition following her performance in this year's (May 1-2) league outdoor championships in University Center, Mich. She won the shot put (48-4) and produced a fourth-place finish in the hammer throw (177-4) with personal career-best efforts in both events as the Bulldogs placed fourth overall in the women's standings with 89 points at the meet hosted by Saginaw Valley State University. Her first-place finish in the shot put broke her own school record in the event while her performance in the hammer throw ranks as the second-best all-time outdoor mark in Bulldog history.
Carroll earned All-America accolades earlier this year in the women's shot put on the final day of action (March 15) at the NCAA Division II National Indoor Track and Field Championships in Mankato, Minn. She took seventh place in the event at the national indoor meet with a toss of 46-6. Previously, she claimed 2007 NCAA-II Indoor All-America kudos in both the weight throw and shot put following her performances at the national indoor meet last year (3/9-10) in Boston, Mass. Carroll received national runner-up honors in the weight throw last year during the opening day of action (3/9) with a best toss of 59-4 in the event. Carroll, who was FSU's lone participant a year ago in the NCAA-II Indoor Championships, then placed sixth overall in the shot put with a top toss of 46-5.50 on the final day (3/10).
In 2006, Carroll took ninth place overall among 18 throwers in the women's shot put at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships (May 26-27) at Emporia, Kan. Her best toss of 46-4.75 fell one spot short of earning All-America accolades. During the 2005-06 season, Carroll was also named the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Region Women's Indoor Field Event Athlete Of The Year as announced by the United States Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). She placed 11th overall in the shot put competition at the national indoor meet in 2006 with a toss of 45-2.50 in the final round of the event at Boston's Reggie Lewis Center.
In her first season with the Bulldogs, Goodson placed sixth at the 2008 GLIAC Outdoor Championships in the long jump (17-2.75). Her best performance (19-5.25) to date this year in the event came two weeks ago (May 7) when she earned runner-up honors and surpassed the national automatic qualification standard at the Aquinas Twilight Invitational in Grand Rapids, Mich. She also ran on FSU's 4x100-meter relay squad, which established a new school record with a time of 47.74 at the Northwood Invitational (April 19) this season in Midland, Mich. Goodson placed seventh in the long jump (17-0.50) at the 2008 GLIAC Indoor Championships (Feb. 29-March 1) in Findlay, Ohio.
