2006 GLIAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships
Grand Valley State Captures Both Men's & Women's Crowns In Two-Day Meet
Grand Valley State captured both the men's and women's overall team titles at the 2006 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Outdoor Track and Field Championships held Thursday and Friday (May 4-5) at Ferris State's Top Taggart Field in Big Rapids, Mich.
The Lakers netted 269 total points in winning the women's division. Ashland took second place with 140 points while Findlay was third (101 points) in the 10-team field.
In the men's division, the Lakers compiled 255 points while Findlay placed second (142.50 points) and Saginaw Valley State finished third (117.50) among the nine teams competing.
Findlay's Marc Arce picked up the GLIAC Men's Coach of the Year Award while GVSU's Jerry Baltes received the women's outdoor award honor. GLIAC Freshman of the Year Award honors went to Robert Haynes of Michigan Tech on the men's side while MTU's Erin Ballun and Jazmin Williams of Hillsdale shared the women's award.
Ferris State's Jenny Irwin claimed the conference's Most Valuable Athlete Award for the women's running events, Sanchaze Ross of Findlay earned men's running event MVP Award laurels, UF's Dakel Vicks received the men's Most Valuable Field Event Athlete Award and Joanne Douglas of Ashland was the recipient of the GLIAC Most Valuable Field Event Athlete Award on the women's side.
The award winners were chosen on a vote by the league's respective member head coaches.
GVSU won its seventh-straight league women's outdoor championship and its fourth consecutive men's outdoor crown with the sweep in the two-day event.
