Ferris State's Kamitra Carroll picked up USTFCCCA All-America honors
|
Junior thrower Kamitra Carroll (Flint/Carman-Ainsworth) of the 2006-07 Ferris State University women's track and field team was recently named to the Division II Women's Indoor Track and Field All-America Team as announced by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
The All-America teams were announced based on final results from the NCAA-II Indoor Championships held March 9-10 at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston, Mass. The top eight finishers in each event (including relays) at the NCAA Division II Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track and Field Championships earned All-America recognition. The various regional and national award winners were also selected by a vote of track and field coaches from across the country.
Carroll earned All-America kudos in both the weight throw and shot put following her performances at the national meet. She claimed national runner-up honors in the weight throw during Friday's (March 9) opening day of action at the national meet with a best toss of 59-4 in the event. Carroll placed second overall behind Winona State's (Minn.) Emily King, who recorded a top throw of 60-9.50 in the event.
Carroll then placed sixth overall in the shot put with a top toss of 46-5.50 on Saturday (March 10). The winner was Bemidji State's (Minn.) Sheena Devine with a performance of 51-0.25 in the event. Carroll was FSU's lone participant in the NCAA-II Championships.
Carroll placed second in the shot put (46-7.50) and was fourth in the weight throw (55-11) while surpassing the national provisional qualification standard in both events at the 2007 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Indoor Championships (Feb. 23-24) held in University Center, Mich.
Last year, Carroll took ninth place overall among 18 throwers in the women's shot put at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships (May 26-27) on Emporia State's (Kan.) Zola Witten Track inside Fran Welch Stadium at Emporia, Kan. Her best toss of 46-4.75 fell one spot short of earning All-America accolades.
During the 2005-06 season, Carroll was also named the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Region Women's Indoor Field Event Athlete Of The Year as announced by the USTFCCCA. She placed 11th overall in the shot put competition at last year's national indoor meet with a toss of 45-2.50 in the final round of the event at the Reggie Lewis Center.
The Bulldog women's indoor track and field team finished fifth with 49.50 points at this year's GLIAC Indoor Championships. Carroll's two All-America showings at the national meet enabled the Bulldogs to match their highest finish in program history at the NCAA Division II Indoor Championships (15th - 11 points).
