Ferris State Falls To North Florida at National Men's Tennis Championships

The Ferris State University men's tennis team concluded the 2002 campaign with a 5-0 loss against North Florida in the opening round of the NCAA Division II National Men's Tennis Championships held Thursday (May 9) at the Plaza Tennis Center in Kansas City, Mo.

The Bulldogs, currently ranked 25th overall in the latest (April 26) Intercollegiate Tennis Association NCAA Division II national poll, lost all three doubles flights and dropped two singles matches against the seventh-ranked Ospreys. FSU finished the year with a 14-6 overall mark.

"Our doubles play let us down today," head coach Paul Marcum said. "The other team got off to a quick start and we could never recover. I'm so proud of what we accomplished this season, but we dug ourselves too big of a hole today."

FSU, which was making its third consecutive and sixth overall national tournament appearance, advanced to the 16-team single-elimination national round by claiming one of two Great Lakes Regional tournaments last weekend (May 3-4) at the FSU Racquet and Fitness Center in Big Rapids, Mich. Ferris handled West Virginia Wesleyan 5-0 in last Friday's (May 3) first match before defeating Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) rival Wayne State by a score of 5-3 in Saturday's (May 4) championship encounter.

With the win, North Florida improved to 22-6 overall and advanced to Friday's (May 10) quarterfinal round. The Ospreys claimed the Mid-Atlantic Regional title with a 5-4 win over 12th-ranked Francis Marion (S.C.) last Saturday in Jacksonville, Fla., and earned national tournament runner-up honors in 1995 and placed third in 1996.
