Ferris State's Dave Ramos Announced His Resignation As Men's Tennis Head Coach Thursday (May 11)
The Ferris State University Athletics Department has announced the resignation of men's tennis head coach Dave Ramos, according to an announcement made Thursday (May 11) by FSU Athletics Director Tom Kirinovic.

Ramos, who recently completed his first official year as the school's head men's tennis coach following five years guiding Ferris' women's tennis program, plans to move closer to his family in New York and continue his education by pursuing a Master's Degree. A national search for a replacement will begin immediately.

"Dave has done an outstanding job coaching our women's and men's tennis teams and we are losing a tremendously valuable employee," said Kirinovic. "Numerous championships and NCAA Tournament appearances as well as frequent All-America honors have been a hallmark of Dave's tenure.

"As importantly, he has been a loyal and hard-working employee and tremendous ambassador for the university. We wish Dave well as he goes down a new path in his life," Kirinovic added.

Besides coaching, Ramos also served as a head tennis professional for Ferris’ Racquet and Fitness Center, the school’s Professional Tennis Management (PTM) program and directed summer camps.

A Ferris State alumnus, Ramos led the Bulldog men's tennis team to its ninth-straight and 12th overall NCAA-II National Tournament appearance during the 2005-06 campaign. Ferris State, which was ranked 33rd in the latest (April 28) Fila Division II Collegiate National Rankings, placed second overall at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament this season. The Bulldogs recorded a 16-8 overall record, including a second-place 6-1 mark in league action.

"I will always look back at my time at Ferris as a student-athlete and coach with the greatest sense of pride," Ramos said. "I have been fortunate enough to win conference championships, coach All-Americans, and be recognized as a Regional Coach of the Year. I've given my best effort in regards to the tennis teams, camps, and PTM program. The education and experience I have gained here is the foundation of my tennis career.

"I could not have asked for more support from the staff, athletics department, administration along with the community and I'm so fortunate to have worked with many caring and generous people," added Ramos.

Ramos, who served in a dual role as both FSU's head women's tennis coach and interim head men's tennis coach in 2004-05, was honored as the 2005 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Great Lakes Region Women's Coach of the Year after leading FSU to its 10th consecutive and 15th all-time NCAA Division II Women's Tennis Tournament appearance in 2004-05. The squad also reached the NCAA-II Sweet Sixteen for the second time in four years and the sixth time overall. The Bulldogs finished the year with a 17-3 overall record and placed second in both the GLIAC Women's Tennis regular-season and tournament competition during the 2004-05 season.

Ramos, who was voted the ITA/Wilson Midwest Region Coach of the Year in 2001, directed the Ferris women's squad to an 18-8 overall mark, the school's first-ever NCAA-II national quarterfinal round appearance and a top 20 national ranking in 2003-04. He also coached former Bulldog players Jennifer Garvey and Barbora Jilkova, who were honored as the school's first-ever women's tennis All-Americans in 2001-02. Previously, Ramos led the Bulldogs to a GLIAC Tournament Championship in 2002-03 after guiding the squad to its 17th-consecutive league regular-season title and a berth in the NCAA-II Tournament in his first season as head coach in 2000-01.

The Bulldog men’s tennis team claimed its sixth consecutive regional championship under Ramos' tutelage as interim coach in 2004-05. Ferris also advanced to the NCAA-II Sweet Sixteen for the ninth time in school history after earning second-place recognition in the both the GLIAC's regular-season and tournament action. Ramos posted FSU career head coaching marks of 90-36 (.714) and 29-18 (.617) in women's and men's tennis, respectively. His 90 victories as women's tennis head coach ranks second in the program's all-time annals.

Prior to his head coaching tenure at Ferris, Ramos was the Assistant Director of the Tennis Europe program based in Stamford, Conn. He previously served as the assistant coach for the Ferris women's tennis program in the 1998-99 season during his undergraduate years in the university's nationally-acclaimed PTM program. As an assistant under former head coach Ed Luck, Ramos helped guide the nationally-ranked Bulldogs to their first appearance in the NCAA-II Tournament since the 1985-86 season.

Ramos has also worked as the director of Juvenile Development at the Columbus Tennis Club in Manhattan, N.Y. and as the staff pro at the prestigious John Gardiner Tennis Resort on Camelback Mountain in Scottsdale, Ariz. While employed at exclusive clubs in Greenwich and New York City, Ramos was a hitting partner for Roy Emerson, Ken Rosewall, Dick Savitt and Patrick McEnroe along with a host of celebrities.

The Southhampton, N.Y., native is a 1995 FSU graduate with a bachelor's degree in International Business. A 1987 graduate of Sachem North High School in Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y., Ramos is a member of the United States Tennis Association (USTA).
