May 5: Bulldog Men's Tennis Falls To Rival Northwood In NCAA Tournament

The Ferris State University men's tennis team saw its 2005-06 season come to an end Friday (May 5) as the Bulldogs dropped a 5-2 decision to nationally-ranked archrival Northwood in the NCAA-II Great Lakes Regional final on NU's Gerstacker Courts at Midland, Mich.

The Bulldogs concluded the year with a 16-8 overall mark while the Timberwolves improved to 17-1 overall and will now advance into the NCAA-II Sweet Sixteen May 10-13 in Kansas City, Mo.

Ferris entered the match ranked 33rd in the latest (April 28) Fila Division II Collegiate Tennis National Rankings. The Timberwolves were ranked 10th in the latest poll.

FSU took a 2-1 advantage following the doubles round as the Bulldogs claimed wins in both the numbers one and two doubles flights. However, Northwood responded to win the first four completed singles matches in notching the victory. The win was NU's third over the Bulldogs this campaign.

Ferris had previously defeated Grand Valley State 5-1 Thursday (May 4) to reach the regional final.

Northwood was one of two Great Lakes Regional schools playing host to first and second round play in the NCAA-II Tournament. The Timberwolves, who were joined by Drury (Mo.) as a regional host, were seeded second in the regional draw and FSU third heading into the opening round of the national event.

May 4: Ferris Advances Into Great Lakes Regional Final With Victory

The Ferris State University men's tennis team advanced into the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional final with a 5-1 win over Grand Valley State Thursday (May 4) in Midland, Mich.

The Bulldogs improved to 16-7 overall with the regional victory. FSU will square off against host Northwood in the regional final Friday (May 5) at 10 a.m. (EDT). The Timberwolves defeated Lake Superior State 5-0 in Thursday's second semifinal.

Ferris won two of three doubles flights and then captured wins in the first three completed singles matches to finish off the Lakers. FSU is ranked 33rd in the latest (April 28) Fila Division II Collegiate Tennis Rankings.

The winner of Friday's regional title match will receive a berth into the NCAA-II Championships Sweet Sixteen set for May 10-13 in Kansas City, Mo.

April 25: Bulldogs Conclude Regular-Season With Non-League Triumph

The Ferris State University men's tennis squad concluded the 2005-06 regular-season with a 9-0 triumph over visiting Hope Tuesday (April 25) in non-league action at FSU's Racquet and Fitness Center in Big Rapids, Mich.

The Bulldogs, who are ranked 34th in the Fila Division II Collegiate National Rankings, finished the regular-season with a 15-7 overall mark. Ferris is currently listed third in the Great Lakes Regional Rankings.

The Flying Dutchmen fell to 11-10 overall this season with the setback. They entered the match listed 19th in the Fila Division III Central Regional Poll.

Ferris took all six singles flights in straight-sets while the closest doubles score was 8-3 at both the numbers one and three spots. Eight different Bulldog players saw action in the victory.

Ferris State will now await the NCAA Division II National Tournament pairings, which will be announced later this week. The Bulldogs figure to be one of the eight teams earning berths in the NCAA-II Great Lakes Regional Tournament slated to be held May 4-6 at two sites to be determined.

April 18: Bulldogs Post Shutout Home Win In Non-League Play

The Ferris State University men's tennis squad rolled to a convincing 9-0 shutout over Albion in non-league action Tuesday (April 18) at FSU's Racquet and Fitness Center in Big Rapids, Mich.

The Bulldogs, who are ranked 34th in the Fila Division II Collegiate National Rankings, improved to 14-7 overall this season.

The Britons dropped to 7-9 overall under fifth-year head coach and former Bulldog head coach Scott Frew. Frew previously guided Ferris State to a 50-10 (.833) overall men's tennis mark along with three Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championships from 1989-91.

Ferris took all six singles flights in straight-sets while the closest doubles score was 8-4 at the number three spot. Eight different Bulldog players saw action in the victory.

Ferris State, which is presently ranked third in the Great Lakes Regional Rankings, will host Hope Tuesday, April 25, in its regular-season finale at the FSU Racquet and Fitness Center. The non-conference tilt begins at 4 p.m. (EDT).

April 15: Northwood Defeats Ferris In 2006 GLIAC Tournament Final

Archrival Northwood defeated Ferris State in the championship match of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Men's Tennis Tournament Saturday (April 15) by a score of 5-0 at the Midland (Mich.) Community Tennis Center.

The top-seeded Timberwolves, who are ranked 10th in the latest Fila Division II National Rankings, claimed all three doubles flights and then won the first two completed singles matches to beat Ferris. FSU fell to 13-7 overall this campaign while Northwood improved to 15-1 this season.

Ferris, which is presently ranked 34th in the latest national rankings, had defeated Michigan Tech and Grand Valley State Friday (April 14) to reach the league final by identical 5-0 scores.

With the loss, Ferris has now been edged by NU in the GLIAC Tournament finals seven consecutive seasons (2000-05) to date since the Bulldogs claimed their last league crown in 1999.

Northwood holds the second spot in the current Great Lakes Regional rankings while Ferris is third.

The Bulldogs will host Albion Tuesday, April 18, in a 3 p.m. (EDT) non-league home encounter at FSU's Racquet and Fitness Center in Big Rapids, Mich.

April 14: Ferris Advances To GLIAC Tournament Championship Match

The Ferris State University men's tennis team advanced to the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament Championship Match with a pair of victories Friday (April 14) in opening day action at the Midland Community Tennis Center in Midland, Mich.

The Bulldogs, who are ranked 34th in the Fila Division II Collegiate Tennis National Rankings, defeated Michigan Tech 5-0 in the quarterfinal round Friday morning and then beat Grand Valley State 5-0 in the afternoon semifinals. FSU will square off against archrival Northwood in Saturday's (April 15) league tournament title match beginning at 10 a.m. (EDT).

Ferris State, which is seeded second overall in the draw behind NU, improved to 13-6 overall this season with the two wins. The Bulldogs swept the doubles round in both encounters and then claimed victories in the first two completed singles flights.

FSU is presently ranked third in the Great Lakes Region. Grand Valley State, seeded third in the tournament, is the region's fifth-ranked squad. MTU was the seventh seed in this year's GLIAC Tournament.

Ferris has been edged by NU in the GLIAC Tournament finals six consecutive seasons (2000-05) to date since the Bulldogs claimed their last league crown in 1999. The Ferris State University men's tennis team suffered its first Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) setback of the 2005-06 campaign Wednesday (April 5) as nationally-ranked Northwood claimed a 7-2 triumph in the rivalry match at FSU's Racquet and Fitness Center in Big Rapids, Mich.

The Bulldogs, who are ranked 33rd in the Fila Division II Collegiate Tennis National Rankings, dropped to 11-6 overall and 6-1 in league play this season with the loss. The seventh-ranked Timberwolves improved their record to 7-1 overall and 2-0 in the GLIAC.

FSU is presently ranked third in the Great Lakes Region while Northwood is second in the regional listing. More importantly, the Timberwolves remain as the league's only unbeaten team in conference action. The Bulldogs had won six consecutive matches prior to the key league tilt.

Northwood took two of the three doubles flights and then claimed five of the six singles spots to notch the victory. FSU's lone wins came in the number one doubles and five singles matches.

Ferris State wrapped up its conference slate with the setback. The Bulldogs will next take part in the GLIAC Tournament, which is scheduled to take place Friday and Saturday, April 14-15, at Midland, Mich. Match times and pairings will be announced following the conclusion of league regular-season play next week.

The Ferris State men's tennis team won its sixth-straight contest to open Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play with a 6-3 victory over Wayne State Sunday (April 2) in FSU's Racquet and Fitness Center at Big Rapids, Mich.

The Bulldogs, who are ranked 33rd in the Fila Division II Collegiate Tennis National Rankings, improved to 11-5 overall and remained unbeaten in GLIAC action with a 6-0 mark this season. WSU fell to 3-4 overall and 1-2 in league play with the loss.

FSU is presently ranked third in the Great Lakes Region while the Warriors are seventh in the regional listing.

Ferris State won two of the three doubles flights and then captured the top four singles spots en route to the victory. WSU's lone wins came in numbers five and six singles play along with the second doubles flight.

March 26: Ferris Completes Weekend Sweep To Stay Unbeaten In GLIAC Play

The Ferris State men's tennis team won its fourth Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) match in as many days as the Bulldogs recorded a 7-2 triumph over Lake Superior State Sunday (March 26) at the FSU Racquet and Fitness Center in Big Rapids, Mich.

The Bulldogs, who are ranked 33rd in the Fila Division II Collegiate Tennis National Rankings, swept the doubles round and emerged victorious in four of the six singles flights.

Ferris improved to 10-5 overall and 5-0 in the GLIAC with its fifth-straight victory this campaign. LSSU dropped to 2-5 overall and 0-2 in league action. FSU is presently ranked third in the Great Lakes Region while the Lakers are eighth in the regional listing.

The match was Ferris' fourth in as many days following two conference road victories Thursday and Friday (March 23-24) at Findlay and Mercyhurst, respectively. FSU also defeated Michigan Tech 9-0 Saturday (March 25) in a GLIAC home match.

The Ferris State University men's tennis team recorded its third consecutive Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) road victory Friday (March 24) with an 8-1 triumph over Mercyhurst in Erie, Pa.

The Bulldogs improved to 8-5 overall and remained unbeaten in league play with a 3-0 mark to date. The Lakers dropped to 7-5 overall and 1-1 in the GLIAC with the loss. All three of FSU's conference wins this campaign have been by identical 8-1 scores to date.

FSU is presently ranked 33rd overall in the Fila Division II National Rankings along with third in the Great Lakes Region.

The lone Laker win came in number one singles action where Mariano Fava defeated FSU freshman Brenton Bacon by a 3-6, 6-3, 10-8 count.

The Ferris State University men's tennis team, which is ranked 33rd overall in the Fila Division II Collegiate Tennis Rankings, remained unbeaten in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play with an 8-1 road win over Findlay Thursday (March 23) in Findlay, Ohio.

The Bulldogs improved to 7-5 overall this campaign and 2-0 in GLIAC action with the victory while UF dropped to 6-8 overall and 0-2 in conference play.

Ferris took five of the six singles flights and swept the doubles round in notching its second-straight triumph of the season.

The Bulldogs conclude their two-match league road trip by visiting Mercyhurst Friday, March 24, for a 3 p.m. (EST) tilt in Erie, Pa.

March 20: Ferris Opens GLIAC Action With Key Regional Victory

The Ferris State University men's tennis team opened Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) action with a 8-1 triumph over host Grand Valley State Monday (March 20) in Allendale, Mich.

The Bulldogs improved to 6-5 overall this season and snapped a three-match losing skid with the key regional victory. FSU entered the match ranked third in the current Fila Division II Great Lakes Regional Rankings while GVSU is presently fifth in the regional poll. The Lakers fell to 9-5 overall this campaign with the league-opening setback.

Ferris State, which is ranked 33rd overall in the current Fila Division II Collegiate Tennis National Rankings administered by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), swept the doubles round and took five of the six singles flights in straight-sets.

The Bulldogs open up a two-match conference road swing Thursday, March 23, against the Findlay Oilers in Findlay, Ohio. Match time is set for 3 p.m. (EST).

March 15: Bulldogs Fall To NCAA Division I Western Michigan

The Ferris State University men's tennis team suffered a 7-0 setback Wednesday (March 15) versus NCAA Division I Western Michigan in non-league action at the West Hills Athletic Club in Kalamazoo, Mich.

FSU fell to 5-5 overall this campaign while the Broncos improved to 16-2 overall with the triumph. WMU head coach Dave Morin also notched his 200th career coaching victory with the win.

Ferris State is ranked 33rd overall in the current Fila Division II Collegiate Tennis Rankings, which are administered by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). WMU presently ranks 43rd in the NCAA-I national rankings.

The Broncos swept the singles round and won two of three doubles flights, which counted as a single point in the final team score per NCAA-I regulations. FSU fell to 5-4 overall this campaign with the setback while the Tritons improved to 9-1 this campaign.

Eckerd is ranked ninth in the latest Fila Division II Collegiate Tennis Rankings while Ferris is 31st overall.

March 6: NCAA Division I North Florida Defeats Ferris State

NCAA Division I North Florida took five of six singles flights and swept the doubles round en route to a 6-1 non-conference win over the Ferris State men's tennis team Monday (March 6) in Jacksonville, Fla.

The match was the second of Ferris' five outings in six days on its annual spring trip to Florida. Ferris State fell to 4-2 overall this campaign with its second-straight setback.

The Ospreys improved to 8-4 overall this season with the victory, which was its fourth in five home matches this year.

Ferris State is currently ranked 31st in the latest Fila Division II Collegiate Tennis Rankings.

The match represented the second official regular-season dual action of the spring season for Ferris State. FSU is currently ranked 31st overall in the Fila Division II Collegiate Tennis Rankings.

The Bulldogs, who are guided by first-year head coach and former FSU women's tennis coach Dave Ramos, took all six singles flights and swept the doubles round.

Feb. 3: Ferris Posts Convincing Shutout Victory In Exhibition Action

The Ferris State University men's tennis team posted a 9-0 win over Grand Rapids Community College in exhibition play Friday (Feb. 3) at FSU's Racquet and Fitness Center in Big Rapids, Mich.

Freshman Brenton Bacon recorded a 6-0, 6-1 win over Chris Levay in number one singles play. At the number two singles flight, senior Mark Hammelman beat Dani Vacaquzman 6-1, 6-0.

Senior Kyle Halberg was victorious in number three singles action as he beat Matt Fenech 6-2, 6-0. Sophomore Bryan Karazia handled Alex Brown 6-0, 6-0 at the number four singles spot and sophomore Lewis DeGeneault defeated Devin Opendyk 6-0, 6-0 at the fifth flight. Freshman Paul Piotrowski completed the sweep with a 6-1, 6-1 victory against Greg Foster in number six singles competition.

In doubles action, FSU won all three flights in convincing fashion. Bacon and Karazia teamed up to beat Levay and Opendyk 8-1 at the top spot, Halberg and Hammelman posted an 8-2 triumph over Fenech and Vacaquzman in number two doubles play while DeGeneault and Piotrowski defeated Brown and Craig Gurr 8-0 at the third flight.

Ferris State will next visit DePauw (Ind.) Friday, Feb. 17, for a 6 p.m. (EST) non-league outing in Greencastle, Ind.


Oct. 2: Bulldogs Wrap Up Play In Chicago State Windy City Fall Invitational

Final day action in the first annual Chicago State Windy City Fall Invitational concluded Sunday (Oct. 2) in Chicago, Ill. The three-day event included bracket play in four singles flights in addition to a team format in doubles play. The invitational featured players and teams from Eastern Illinois, University of Chicago, South Dakota State, Grand Valley State, Ferris State, Valparaiso, Illinois-Chicago and host Chicago-State.

In Flight A singles play, Bulldog freshman Brenton Bacon claimed the individual championship as he posted a 6-2, 6-1 win over Nic Kooyers of Valparaiso in the title match. Bacon compiled a 4-0 mark in the three-day event. Junior Cory Eider won the consolation portion of the same bracket as he came back to win two matches after losing in the opening round Friday (Sept. 30).

Ferris senior Mark Hammelman lost a 6-3, 2-6, 10-7 decision to Grand Valley State's Adam Sandusky in Sunday's fifth-place match in Flight B singles play. Hammelman was 2-2 overall in singles play at the invitational. Senior Luis Arguello, who fell to eventual division champion Prakoso Imanuel of Chicago State 6-3, 6-2 in the semifinal round, registered a 2-1 singles record.

Sophomore Lewis DeGeneault took fifth place in the Flight C singles division as he won three consecutive matches after falling in Friday's opening round. He registered a 6-0, 6-2 decision over Chicago's Connor Farrell in Sunday's consolation final. Junior Kevin Brundle, who was 0-2 in singles play, fell to Farrell 6-3, 6-1 in the consolation semifinals.

FSU sophomore Corey Banghart also took fifth place in Flight D as he earned a 6-4, 6-2 win over Ferris senior Eric Kent in Sunday's final match. Banghart finished 2-1 in the flight while Kent recorded a 1-2 mark. Sophomore Andrew Gunberg also competed in the flight and totaled a 2-1 overall mark.

In the doubles team format, FSU lost its opening round match to Valparaiso as the Bulldogs dropped three of four doubles encounters. FSU's lone win came at the number one spot as Bacon and Hammelman teamed up to post an 8-5 triumph. In the consolation round, Ferris beat Illinois-Chicago 2-1 and then swept South Dakota State 3-0 to win the consolation portion of the doubles event. The top three doubles team from each university competed against the top three teams from the opposing institution with the winners advancing under the team format.

The invitational concluded the fall campaign for the Bulldog men's tennis team under first-year head coach Dave Ramos.


Oct. 1: Day Two Action Complete In Chicago State Windy City Fall Invite

Day two men's tennis action continued Saturday (Oct. 1) in the Chicago State Windy City Fall Invitational held in Chicago, Ill.

The three-day event included bracket play in four singles flights on day two in addition to doubles play. The invitational features players from Eastern Illinois, University of Chicago, South Dakota State, Grand Valley State, Ferris State, Valparaiso, Illinois-Chicago and host Chicago-State.

In the Flight A singles division, Bulldog freshman Brenton Bacon beat Illinois-Chicago's Paul Glendenning 7-5, 6-0 and defeated EIU's Charles LeVaque 6-2, 6-4 to advance to Sunday's (Oct. 2) divisional championship match. FSU junior Cory Eider defeated EIU's Brandon Lefert 6-3, 6-2 in the consolation part of the bracket.

In Flight B, Ferris senior Luis Arguello posted a 5-7, 7-5, 6-3 victory against UIC's Eric Fey before dropping a 6-3, 6-2 decision to Prakoso Imanuel of Chicago State in the semifinals. Senior Mark Hammelman is also competing in the bracket and recorded a 6-0, 6-0 victory against Joseph Tchan of Chicago in the consolation portion of the event.

Sophomore Lewis DeGeneault won a pair of consolation matches in Flight C as he beat Amit Nathani of UIC 6-3, 6-3 and then recorded a 6-0, 6-0 win against Seah Bush of Eastern Illinois. Bulldog junior Kevin Brundle received a bye in the consolation round before falling to Connor Farrell of Chicago.

Finally, in Flight D singles play, sophomore Corey Banghart beat Navpaul Singh of Chicago 6-0, 6-0 in the consolation part of the flight after earning a bye earlier in the day. Senior Eric Kent lost to Toni Todoric 6-2, 6-1 before earning a 7-5, 6-2 win over Blain Keller of Valparaiso in consolation action. Sophomore Andrew Gunberg beat James Farmer of Grand Valley State 6-4, 5-7, 6-1, but then lost to Todoric 6-2, 6-4 in the semifinals.

Results of Saturday's doubles play are not yet available.

Sept. 30: Bulldogs Open Up Action At Chicago State Windy City Fall Invite

The Ferris State University men's tennis team opened action in the first annual Chicago State Windy City Fall Invitational Friday (Sept. 30) in Chicago, Ill.

The three-day event included bracket play in four singles flights on day one. The invitational features players from Eastern Illinois, University of Chicago, South Dakota State, Grand Valley State, Ferris State, Valparaiso, Illinois-Chicago and host Chicago-State.

FSU freshman Brenton Bacon posted a 6-1, 6-1 triumph over Joe Venegas of Valparaiso in the Flight A singles bracket. Bulldog junior Cory Eider dropped a 6-4, 7-5 decision to Valparaiso's Nic Kooyers in the same flight.

In Flight B singles action, senior Luis Arguello defeated Mike Shilder of Valparaiso by a 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 score while senior Mark Hammelman fell to Valpo's Mike Wagner 7-6, 6-3.

Sophomore Lewis DeGeneault lost to Dave Bukowski of Valpo 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 in the Flight C singles bracket. Junior Kevin Brundle also competed in the Flight C division and fell to Alex Lau of Valparaiso 6-3, 7-6 (11).

Finally, in Flight D singles play, Bulldog sophomore Corey Banghart suffered a 6-1, 6-4 setback in his match against Valparaiso's Dan Brunette. However, FSU sophomore Andrew Gunberg recorded a 7-5, 7-5 win over Blain Keller of Valpo in the same division.

Action continues Saturday (Oct. 1) at the CSU Courts with final day play set for Sunday (Oct. 2).


Sept. 24: Bulldogs Wrap Up Play In ITA Regional Championships

The Ferris State University men's tennis team wrapped up play in the 2005 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Great Lakes Regional Championships Saturday (Sept. 24) at the Midland Community Tennis Center in Midland, Mich.

FSU freshman Brenton Bacon, who was seeded fifth overall in the draw, dropped a 6-4, 6-3 decision to top-seeded Matias Oddone of Drury (Mo.) in the quarterfinal round. He had posted a 6-4, 6-1 win over Nathan Moore of Southern Indiana in the round of 16.

Bulldog junior Cory Eider also reached the quarterfinals before being eliminated by fourth-seeded Stefan Borg of Drury by a 6-3, 6-3 count. The eighth-seeded Eider had defeated Southern Indiana's Andrew McGuire 6-0, 6-1 in the third round of the event.

Ferris State senior Luis Arguello dropped a 6-1, 6-2 decision to Northwood's Marius Broek in the sweet sixteen round.

In doubles action, the Bulldog tandem of Bacon and senior Mark Hammelman earned their second win of the tournament with an 8-1 triumph over Lucas Krasowski and Lee Marnick in the third round. They were then eliminated in semifinal round play by Drury's Oddone and Krizstian Kaplan with an 8-6 score.

The single-elimination regional bracket included 57 singles players and 26 doubles tandems. The ITA regional event, which was hosted by Northwood University, included both singles and doubles competition. Participants from all schools in the Great Lakes Region were included in the field with the individual singles and doubles champions earning automatic berths into the national championship field.

Sept. 23: Bulldogs Take Part In Day One Action At ITA Regionals

The Ferris State University men's tennis team took part in opening day action at the 2005 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Great Lakes Regional Championships Friday (Sept. 23) at the Midland Community Tennis Center in Midland, Mich.

In singles play, FSU freshman Brenton Bacon advanced to the round of 16 with a win in round two. Bacon, who is seeded fifth overall in the draw, received a first round bye in the field. He then beat Dan Hersh of Mercyhurst 6-3, 6-4 in round two.

Junior Cory Eider also reached the third round and remains alive in singles play as he picked up a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Justin Sauerbrey of Grand Valley State in round two. Eider, seeded eighth overall, also picked up a bye in the first round of action.

Senior Luis Arguello won two matches to reach the third round, including a 6-1, 6-0 triumph over Northwood's Marcel Galik in the second frame.

Senior Mark Hammelman won his opening match but then fell to third-seeded Omar Iaalej of Drury (Mo.) 6-2, 7-5 in the second round.

Sophomore Lewis DeGeneault lost his initial singles match to Ryan McDaniel of Southern Indiana by a 6-1, 6-1 count.

Finally, Bulldog sophomore Andrew Gunberg lost to Alan Dowell of Indianapolis 6-2, 6-2 in round number one.

In doubles play, Bacon and Hammelman reached the quarterfinal round with an 8-6 win over the Northwood combination of Galik and Carlos Canudas in the second round. The duo is seeded third in the field.

DeGeneault and junior Kevin Brundle posted a first-round win before being eliminated in the second round. Arguello and Eider lost their opening round match for FSU.

The National Small College Tennis Championships, which will be held at Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers, Fla., is an event presented by the United States Tennis Association (USTA) and features the top players in the nation from NCAA Divisions II and II, NAIA and junior/community colleges battling it out to determine the top small college players in the country.

As the governing body of collegiate tennis, the ITA promotes both the athletic and academic achievements of the collegiate tennis community. The ITA, which was founded in 1956 and is based in Skillman, N.J., administers numerous regional and national championships and has a comprehensive awards program for players and coaches to honor excellence in academics, leadership and sportsmanship.

Sept. 18: Bulldogs Sweep Bracket Play In Home Invitational

The Ferris State University men's tennis team swept three singles flights and claimed the doubles championship in the third annual Bulldog Team Invitational, which wrapped up play Sunday (Sept. 18) at the FSU Racquet and Fitness Center in Big Rapids, Mich.

The two-day event also included players from Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) member schools Grand Valley State, Lake Superior State and Michigan Tech. Individual play was held in three different singles brackets as well as one doubles flight.

FSU sophomore Lewis DeGeneault took first-place honors in the Black Division of singles play with a 6-4, 6-3 triumph over Bulldog junior Kevin Brundle in Sunday's title encounter. Ferris sophomore Cory Banghart and senior Eric Kent also reached the semifinal round as the Bulldogs claimed the final four spots in the nine-participant bracket.

In the Gold Singles Division, FSU freshman Brenton Bacon took the individual title with a 6-1, 6-1 victory against Ferris junior Cory Eider in the final round. The two Bulldog players were among eight individuals in the gold bracket.

Finally, in the Maroon Singles Division, Ferris completed the singles sweep as senior Luis Arguello defeated senior teammate Mark Hammelman 7-6, 6-7 (2), 6-3 to earn the win. Seven players were involved in the maroon division play.

The Bulldogs also won the doubles championship as Bacon and Hammelman teamed up to beat Arguello and Eider 8-2 in the final round. Eleven doubles tandems took part in the bracket play as three Ferris teams advanced to the semifinals.

Ferris State will next take part in the 2005 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Great Lakes Regional Championships slated to be held Friday-Sunday, Sept. 23-25, at the Midland Community Tennis Center in Midland, Mich.

Sept. 17: First Day Results Of Third Annual Bulldog Team Invitational

The Ferris State University men's tennis team advanced six players into championship matches in three different singles divisions during Saturday's (Sept. 17) opening day of play at the third annual Bulldog Team Invitational being held at FSU's Racquet & Fitness Center in Big Rapids, Mich.

The tournament field also includes players from Grand Valley State, Lake Superior State and Michigan Tech. Individual bracket play is being held in three singles divisions and one doubles flight. The final day of competition is set for Sunday (Sept. 18).

In the Maroon Singles Division, senior Mark Hammelman reached the title match and will square off against FSU senior Luis Arguello in Sunday's 9 a.m. (EDT) championship match.

Sophomore Lewis DeGeneault advanced into the championship match of the Black Singles Division with a pair of victories on Saturday. He will face Ferris junior Kevin Brundle in Sunday's final.

Finally, in the Gold Singles Division, Bulldog junior Cory Eider will meet FSU freshman Brenton Bacon in the final on Sunday after each player won two matches Saturday.

In doubles play, Ferris State earned three of the four semifinal round berths. Bacon and Hammelman, who are seeded first in the draw, will square off against FSU's DeGeneault and sophomore Andrew Gunberg in the doubles semfinal round Sunday at 11 a.m. (EDT).

The other half of the doubles bracket pits Arguello and Eider against Grand Valley State's Kyle Dehne and Kyle Klinge.

Consolation matches are also taking place in the event.
