Ferris State University senior Kyle Halberg (Eugene, Ore./Sheldon) has been named this week's recipient of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Men's Tennis Player of the Week Award, which was announced Wednesday (April 6) by the league office.
Halberg posted a 2-0 mark in number three singles play and a 1-1 doubles record last week as the Bulldogs split two conference road matches. He upset the nation's 22nd-ranked singles play in Northwood's Marius Broek 6-3, 7-5 last Tuesday (March 29) and then defeated Wayne State's Glauber Santos 6-1, 6-4 in Sunday's (April 3) league encounter. Halberg also teamed up with junior Mark Hammelman (Brookfield, Wis.) to beat WSU's tandem of Santos and Philip Tharakan 8-3 in the number two doubles match.
The 6-5 Halberg, who was a second-team All-GLIAC pick last campaign, currently is 5-0 in conference singles action and 4-1 in league doubles play to date this season for the nation's 27th-ranked Bulldogs. He presently has overall records of 11-8 (singles) and 8-5 (doubles) this year.
Last season (2003-04), Halberg compiled a 14-6 singles and 19-8 doubles record as he helped guide FSU to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division II Championships (May 12-15) at Altamonte Springs, Fla. He currently has overall career ledgers of 25-14 (singles) and 32-14 (doubles) in his two-year Bulldog career after transferring from NCAA Division I Oregon.
Ferris State, which is presently 5-8 overall and 4-1 in league play this season, will host Mercyhurst Saturday, April 9, in a 10 a.m. (EDT) GLIAC match at FSU's Racquet and Fitness Center in Big Rapids, Mich. The Bulldogs will then host Findlay in their regular-season league finale Sunday, April 10, beginning at 10 a.m. (EDT).
The GLIAC Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week Award is the league's newest weekly award this campaign. The winner is chosen each week by the league's member head coaches.
