May 11: Bulldogs' Season Ends In NCAA-II Sweet Sixteen

The Ferris State University men's tennis team saw its 2004-05 season come to an end Wednesday (May 11) as the Bulldogs dropped a 5-1 decision to nationally top-ranked West Florida in the NCAA-II Sweet Sixteen held at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla.

The Bulldogs, ranked 35th in the latest (April 27) Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division II National Poll, were making their eighth-straight and 11th all-time NCAA-II National Tournament bid. FSU ended the year with a 13-10 overall record while the defending national champion UWF improved to 27-2 overall this campaign and will now face Drury (Mo.) in Thursday's (May 12) national quarterfinals.

Ferris, which won its sixth regional title in a row this season, advanced to the round of 16 for the ninth time in school history by winning the Great Lakes Regional Championship last weekend (May 5-6) at FSU's Racquet and Fitness Center in Big Rapids, Mich. However, UWF won two of the three doubles flights and then captured three victories in singles play to notch the win.

The Bulldogs' lone flight victory came at number three doubles where seniors Francisco Gomez and Matt Hill defeated the Argonauts' tandem of Jonas Mouly and Nicolas Barrientos by a 9-7 score. West Florida previously won the South Region to advance to the sweet sixteen round. Three of UWF's six singles players were ranked among the top 31 players nationally, including two in the top nine.

The national championships are being co-hosted by the Central Florida Sports Commission and the Sunshine State Conference.

May 6: Host Ferris State Wins Great Lakes Regional Men's Tennis Crown

Tournament host Ferris State won two of three doubles matches and split the six singles flights to register a thrilling 5-4 win over Southern Indiana Friday (May 6) in the championship match of the 2005 NCAA Division II Great Lakes Region First and Second Round Men's Tennis Tournament held at FSU's Racquet and Fitness Center in Big Rapids, Mich.

The Bulldogs, who are ranked 35th in the current (April 27) Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division II National Poll, will now advance into the 16-team single elimination national championship field slated for May 11-14 at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla.

Ferris, which is making its eighth straight and 11th all-time NCAA-II National Tournament bid, won its sixth regional title in a row with the victory. The Bulldogs, who are currently 13-9 overall this campaign, will advance to the round of 16 for the ninth time in school history while USI closes the season at 13-7 overall. Bulldog freshman Lewis DeGeneault clinched the victory with a 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 victory over Southern Indiana's Kyle Taylor in the deciding match at the number six singles flight.

FSU will face a South Region opponent to be determined in the NCAA-II Sweet Sixteen on May 11th. The national championships will be co-hosted by the Central Florida Sports Commission and the Sunshine State Conference.

May 5: Ferris Defeats Grand Valley State To Reach Regional Final

The Ferris State men's tennis team advanced to the regional finals with a 5-0 win over Grand Valley State Thursday (May 5) in the 2005 NCAA Division II Great Lakes Region First and Second Round Men's Tennis Tournament held at FSU's Racquet and Fitness Center in Big Rapids, Mich.

The nation's 35th-ranked Bulldogs claimed all three doubles flights and won both the numbers three and four singles spots against the Lakers. FSU improved to 12-9 overall this campaign while GVSU concluded its season with a 16-10 overall mark.

Ferris State, which is midst its 11th NCAA Division II Tournament bid, will face Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) member Southern Indiana on Friday (May 6) at 2 p.m. (EDT) in the regional title match.

Friday's regional champion will earn a berth into the 16-team single elimination national championship field slated for May 11-14 at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla.

April 21: Ferris Tennis Teams Sweep Albion In Non-League Action

The Ferris State University men's and women's tennis teams swept Albion in non-conference action Thursday (April 21) at Albion's Dow Courts in Albion, Mich. The Bulldog men recorded an 8-1 triumph while the Ferris women's team beat the Britons by a 6-3 score in the regular-season finale for both teams.

The FSU men's team, which is ranked 34th in the latest (April 6) Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II National Poll, improved to 11-9 overall this campaign with the win while Albion dropped to 9-9 overall this campaign. Ferris swept the doubles round and won five of the six singles flights in the men's match.

The 19th-ranked Bulldog women's team also swept the doubles play and then split the six singles spots to improve to 15-2 overall this season. Albion's women's squad fell to 15-5 overall with the loss.

Ferris State, which is listed second in both the current NCAA-II Great Lakes Regional Men's and Women's Rankings, is likely to receive a berth into both the men's and women's draws for the 2005 NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional Championships slated for May 6-8 at a campus site to be determined.

April 18: Ferris Topples Calvin In Non-League Encounter

Ferris State recorded a 7-2 non-league men's tennis victory over West Michigan opponent Calvin Monday (April 18) in Grand Rapids, Mich.

The Bulldogs, who are ranked 34th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division II National Poll, improved to 10-9 overall this campaign with the win. FSU also snapped the Knights' 13-match winning streak as Calvin dropped to 13-2 overall this season.

The match was a late addition to the schedule for both schools.

Ferris State, which is second in the current NCAA-II Great Lakes Regional Rankings, is likely to receive a berth into the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional Championships slated for May 6-8 at a campus site to be determined.

April 16: Northwood Beats FSU In GLIAC Tourney Title Match

Archrival Northwood defeated Ferris State in the championship match of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Men's Tennis Tournament Saturday (April 16) by a score of 5-2 at the Midland (Mich.) Community Tennis Center.

The top-seeded Timberwolves, who are ranked 15th in the latest (April 6) Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division II National Rankings, claimed two of three doubles flights and then won three of the four completed singles matches to beat Ferris. FSU fell to 9-9 overall this campaign and saw its four-match winning streak snapped while Northwood improved to 13-5 this season.

Ferris, which is presently ranked 34th in the latest (April 6) Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division II National Poll, had defeated Lake Superior State and Grand Valley State Friday (April 15) to reach the league final.

With the loss, Ferris has now been edged by NU in the GLIAC Tournament finals six consecutive seasons (2000-05) to date since the Bulldogs claimed their last league crown in 1999.

Northwood holds the top spot in the current Great Lakes Regional rankings while Ferris is second. Both teams will participate in the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional Championships May 6-8 at campus sites to be determined.

April 15: Ferris Reaches GLIAC Tournament Championship Match

Ferris State advanced into the title match at the 2005 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Men's Tennis Championships by defeating third-seeded Grand Valley State 5-1 in Friday (April 15) afternoon's semifinal-round match at the Midland (Mich.) Community Tennis Center.

April 15: FSU Advances Into GLIAC Tourney Semifinals With Victory

Ferris State moved into the semifinal round of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Men's Tennis Championships by defeating seventh-seeded Lake Superior State 5-0 in Friday (April 15) morning's quarterfinal-round match at the Midland (Mich.) Community Tennis Center.

The Bulldogs captured three quick victories in the doubles round and then sealed the win by taking the numbers one and five singles flights in straight-sets. Second-seeded FSU improved to 8-8 overall this campaign with its fourth-straight victory this season.

Ferris, which is presently ranked 34th in the latest (April 6) Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division II National Poll, will face third-seeded Grand Valley State in Friday afternoon's 2 p.m. (EDT) semifinals. Both the first and third place matches will take place Saturday (April 16) at 10 a.m. (EDT).

Lake Superior State dropped to 5-8 overall this year with the loss against the region's second-ranked Bulldogs.

April 10: Ferris Handles Findlay In League Regular-Season Finale

The Ferris State University men's tennis team easily handled Findlay by a 9-0 score in its Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) regular-season finale held Sunday (April 10) at FSU's Racquet and Fitness Center in Big Rapids, Mich.

FSU, which improved to 7-8 overall and 6-1 in league play this campaign, won five of the six singles flights by shutout scores of 6-0, 6-0. The lone exception came at the number five spot where Bulldog freshman Lewis DeGeneault beat Orry Kennedy 6-1, 6-1. In doubles play, the closest score was 8-2 at the number three flight.

Findlay dropped to 2-18 overall this season and remained winless in the GLIAC with an 0-6 mark this season. Ferris State is currently ranked second in the NCAA-II Great Lakes Regional poll and 27th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division II National Rankings.

FSU will take part in the GLIAC Championships slated to be held Friday and Saturday, April 15-16, in Midland, Mich.

April 9: Bulldogs Win League Home Match Over Mercyhurst

Ferris State swept the doubles round and then captured victories in five of the six singles flights to defeat Mercyhurst 8-1 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) men's tennis action Saturday (April 9) at FSU's Racquet and Fitness Center in Big Rapids, Mich.

The Bulldogs, who improved to 6-8 overall and 5-1 in league play, entered the match as the region's second-ranked team and 27th overall in the nation. Mercyhurst dropped to 11-6 overall and 4-2 in the GLIAC. The Lakers are ranked fourth in the current NCAA-II Great Lakes Regional Poll.

MC's lone win came at the number two singles spot where Mariano Fava defeated FSU senior Martin Hoch by a 6-4, 6-0 count.

The Bulldogs will host Findlay in their regular-season league finale Sunday, April 10, beginning at 10 a.m. (EDT).

April 3: Ferris Men's Tennis Posts League Road Victory

The Ferris State men's tennis team rolled to a 7-2 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) road victory over Wayne State Sunday (April 3) in a key regional match at the Peachtree Tennis Club in Clinton Township, Mich.

The Bulldogs, who are ranked 27th in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division II National Poll, won the bottom five singles flights and the final two doubles spots in the win. FSU entered the match ranked second in the current NCAA-II Great Lakes Regional Poll while WSU was third.

Wayne State managed to win both the number one singles and doubles matches. Ferris State improved to 5-8 overall and 4-1 in league action while the Warriors fell to 9-8 overall and 2-2 in GLIAC play this campaign.

March 30: Match Against Aquinas Cancelled Due To Conflicts

Wednesday's (March 30) scheduled non-league men's tennis match between FSU and Aquinas has been cancelled due to conflicts and will not be rescheduled.

The Bulldogs will next square off against Wayne State in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) action Sunday (April 3) beginning at 2 p.m. (EDT). The match will be held at the Peachtree Tennis Club in Clinton Township, Mich. The club can be found at 37600 Little Mack Avenue in Clinton Township.


March 29: Ferris Drops Rivalry Match At Northwood

Ferris State fell to archrival Northwood in a battle of nationally-ranked men's tennis teams Tuesday (March 29) at Midland, Mich. The Timberwolves, who are ranked 15th in the current (March 23) Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II National Poll, defeated the Bulldogs 6-3 to win the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) showdown.

Northwood claimed two of three doubles flights and won both the top two and bottom two singles spots en route to the victory. March 24: Bulldog Winning Streak Snapped At Western Michigan

Ferris State saw its three-match men's tennis winning streak come to a halt Thursday (March 24) as the Bulldogs fell to NCAA Division I Western Michigan 7-0 in non-league play inside the West Hills Athletic Club at Kalamazoo, Mich.

The Bulldogs dropped all six singles flights and lost two of the three doubles spots versus the Broncos. FSU's lone win came at number two doubles where senior Kyle Halberg and junior Mark Hammelman teamed up to beat WMU's Jose Orozco and Bryan Norville by an 8-6 count. However, the doubles round counted as only a single point in the team score per NCAA-I regulations thus Western Michigan was able to record the shutout victory.

FSU, which is ranked 27th in the latest (March 23) Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division II National Poll, had won three-straight conference matches prior to Thursday's loss. Western Michigan improved to 12-5 overall this campaign while Ferris dropped to 4-7 overall with the loss.

The Bulldogs, who are ranked 28th in the latest (March 9) Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division II National Rankings, swept the doubles round and won the bottom four singles flights. LSSU dropped to 4-3 overall this season and 0-2 in conference play despite winning the top two singles spots.

Ferris State dropped a 6-3 non-league men's tennis decision to Eckerd (Fla.) Thursday afternoon (March 10) in St. Petersburg, Fla.

The Tritons took an early lead despite drooping the number one doubles match. The Ferris State duo of seniors Jason Cole and Martin Hoch handed Sebastian Nediermayer and Nikola Vujovic their second doubles loss of the season 8-5. Eckerd's David Lopez and Sanjar Shodiev made up the difference by fighting off four tie breakers to claim the third doubles match 9-8 over FSU seniors Matt Hill and Francisco Gomez.

The Ferris State men's tennis team, which is ranked 28th in the latest (March 8) Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division II National Rankings, suffered its fourth consecutive loss as the Bulldogs fell 8-1 at sixth-ranked North Florida Wednesday (March 9) in Jacksonville, Fla.

In a battle of nationally-ranked squads, Florida Southern's men's tennis team claimed a 6-3 home win over Ferris State Tuesday (March 8) in non-league action at Lakeland, Fla.

After falling behind 2-1 following the three doubles matches, the 21st-ranked Moccasins took five of the six singles matches. Ferris State is ranked 25th in the latest (Feb. 23) Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division II national rankings.

Gaston Verna, who's ranked 36th nationally in singles play, defeated 41st-ranked Bulldog senior Jason Cole 6-7, 6-3, 6-0 at the number one flight. In addition, 15th-ranked Milos Koprivica of Florida Southern topped FSU senior Kyle Halberg 6-3, 6-4 at the third singles spot.

The Ferris State University men's tennis team officially opened its 2004-05 dual season with a 5-2 upset of NCAA Division I Toledo (Ohio) on Saturday (Feb. 19) evening at the Laurel Hills Tennis & Swim Club in Toledo, Ohio.

The Bulldogs, who are currently 1-0 overall this campaign, claimed four of the six singles flights and won two of the three doubles matches. The doubles round counted as one point in the final team score per NCAA Division I regulations. The Rockets fell to 4-6 overall this season after previously scoring a 5-2 home victory over Cleveland State (Ohio) on Saturday afternoon.

Feb. 14: Ferris Registers Exhibition Win Over Grand Rapids CC

The Ferris State University men's tennis team opened its spring season with a convincing 9-0 triumph over Grand Rapids Community College in an exhibition match Monday (Feb. 14) at FSU's Racquet & Fitness Center in Big Rapids, Mich.

The Bulldogs won the top five singles flights in straight-sets while the closest doubles score was 8-1. Seven different FSU players saw action in the victory.

Ferris State will visit Toledo (Ohio) this Saturday, Feb. 19, for a 7 p.m. (EST) non-league match in Toledo, Ohio. The contest represents FSU's first official dual match of the 2004-05 season.

Sept. 26: FSU's Jason Cole Eliminated In ITA Singles Semifinals

Ferris State University senior Jason Cole was eliminted in the semfinal round of singles play Sunday (Sept. 26) at the 2004 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Great Lakes Regional Championships held in Midland, Mich.

The top-seeded singles player in the draw, Cole fell to third-seeded and eventual champion Joe Epkey of Southern Indiana in Sunday's semifinals by a 6-4, 6-0 score. The 6-3 Cole was the only Bulldog player to reach Sunday's final day of competition.

The winner of Sunday's singles and doubles titles advanced to the ITA National Small College Championships set for Oct. 15-17 in Fort Myers, Fla.

Sept. 25: FSU's Jason Cole Advances To ITA Regional Singles Semifinals

Ferris State University senior Jason Cole advanced to the semifinal round of singles play with two wins Saturday (Sept. 25) at the 2004 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Great Lakes Regional Championships held in Midland, Mich.

The top-seeded singles player in the draw, Cole will face third-seeded Joe Epkey of Southern Indiana in Sunday's (Sept. 26) semifinals. The 6-3 Cole is the only Bulldog player left in the single-elimination competition following day two action at both the Midland Community Tennis Center and the Gerstacker Tennis Courts at Northwood University.

On Saturday, Bulldog seniors Francisco Gomez and Kyle Halberg both fell in quarterfinal round action while junior Mark Hammelman was eliminated in round three. In doubles action, the Ferris tandems of second-seeded Halberg and Hammelman along with the fourth-seeded duo of Cole and senior Martin Hoch fell in quarterfinal-round play.

The winner of Sunday's singles and doubles competitions will advance to the ITA National Small College Championships set for Oct. 15-17 in Fort Myers, Fla.

Sept. 24: Ferris Players Advance In Regional Action

Four Ferris State University men's tennis singles players and two doubles teams advanced into round three with victories Friday (Sept. 24) in opening day action at the 2004 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Great Lakes Regional Championships held in Midland, Mich.

Seniors Jason Cole, Francisco Gomez and Kyle Halberg along with junior Mark Hammelman all reached the third round of singles action with victories in Friday's second round. In doubles action, FSU's second-seeded tandem of Halberg and Hammelman moved into Saturday's (Sept. 25) quarterfinals as did the fourth-seeded duo of senior Martin Hoch and Cole.

Action in the single-elimination tournament continues Saturday with both two additional rounds of singles and doubles play. Matches are being held at both the Midland Community Tennis Center and the Gerstacker Tennis Courts at Northwood University.

Cole is seeded first overall in the singles draw.

The winner of Sunday's singles and doubles competitions will advance to the ITA National Small College Championships set for Oct. 15-17 in Fort Myers, Fla.

Sept. 18: Ferris Sweeps Bulldog Team Invitational Flight Titles

Ferris State claimed all four flights of the second annual Bulldog Team Invitational which concluded Saturday (Sept. 18) at FSU's Racquet and Fitness Center in Big Rapids, Mich.

In Saturday's final rounds of the four-team single-elimination individual competition, the Bulldogs managed to win all three singles finals and claimed the doubles crown.

The "Maroon" division top flight was won by FSU senior Martin Hoch who posted a 6-4, 6-2 win over Michigan Tech's Chris Zellner in the title match.

Senior Kyle Halberg won the "Gold" division second flight with a 6-3, 6-3 triumph over teammate and Bulldog junior Mark Hammelman.

The third division "Red" flight was won by FSU senior Francisco Gomez. He beat Ferris freshman Lewis DeGeneault 6-3, 7-5 in the final match.

Halberg and Hammelman also teamed up to win the doubles division with a 9-8 (6) win over Lake Superior State's Ludovic Marmet-Demers and Justin LaFlamme.

In addition to FSU, MTU, and Lake Superior State, student athletes from Grand Valley State also competed.

Sept. 17: Ferris Players Advance In Bulldog Team Invitational

The Ferris State University men's tennis team opened the 2004-05 campaign by hosting the second annual Bulldog Team Invitational Friday (Sept. 17) at FSU's Racquet and Fitness Center in Big Rapids, Mich.

Senior Martin Hoch advanced to Saturday's (Sept. 18) "Maroon" division singles final against Michigan Tech's Chris Zellner with a pair of wins Friday.

In the "Gold" division second flight, FSU senior Kyle Halberg and junior Mark Hammelman will square off against each other in Saturday's final.

Three Bulldog players reached Saturday's semifinals in the "Red" third flight division. Senior Francisco Gomez is slated to face FSU junior David Porter while Bulldog freshman Lewis DeGeneault will meet Grand Valley State's David Grow on Saturday.

Hammelman and Halberg also advanced to the semifinal round of doubles play and will battle GVSU's Nirun Raju and Justin Sauerbrey for the right to reach the finals.

Participating teams in the single-elimination individual competition include Ferris, Grand Valley State, Michigan Tech and Lake Superior State.

Saturday's action begins at 8:15 a.m. (EDT). The event is sponsored by Midwest Press, Chemical Bank and the Best Western of Big Rapids.
