May 13: Ferris Eliminated In NCAA Division II Quarterfinal Round Action

The Ferris State University men's tennis team had its season end Thursday (May 13) as the Bulldogs dropped a 5-0 decision to Rollins (Fla.) in quarterfinal-round action at the NCAA-II Championships near Orlando, Fla.

The Bulldogs, who were ranked 28th in the latest (April 29) Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division II National Poll, dropped the three doubles matches and lost two completed singles flights as Rollins advanced to the national semifinals. The match was held at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla.

Ferris, which was making its seventh consecutive and 10th all-time NCAA Divison II Tournament appearance, previously had defeated Kutztown (Pa.) by a 5-2 score in the round of 16 on Wednesday (May 12) after falling in the NCAA-II Sweet Sixteen the four previous campaigns (2000-03). The Bulldogs concluded the year with an 18-9 overall record under second-year head coach Kevin Brandalik.

Fifth-ranked Rollins, which improved to 24-4 overall this campaign, will face number two ranked West Florida in Friday's (May 14) national semifinals. The national championships are co-hosted by the Central Florida Sports Commission, Rollins College and the Sunshine State Conference.

The national championships are being held as part of the first-ever Division II National Championships Festival, which features more than 600 Division II student-athletes vying for national titles in women's golf, men's golf, women's lacrosse, softball, men's tennis and women's tennis. This year marks the first time that the NCAA has held a collegiate sports festival which will be contested over a six-day period in the same geographical area.

May 12: Bulldog Men's Tennis Team Reaches NCAA-II Quarterfinals

The Ferris State University men's tennis team advanced to the national quarterfinals with a 5-2 win over Kutztown (Pa.) in NCAA Division II Sweet Sixteen action held Wednesday (May 12) at the NCAA-II Championships near Orlando, Fla.

The Bulldogs, who are ranked 28th in the current (April 29) Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division II National Poll, reached the elite eight round by winning all four completed singles flights after Kutztown had taken a 2-1 advantage following the doubles round. The match was held at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla.

Ferris, which is midst its seventh consecutive and 10th all-time NCAA Divison II Tournament appearance, previuosly had lost in the round of 16 each of the last four seasons. Kutztown, which won the East Region, concluded the year with a 16-5 overall record while the Bulldogs improved to 18-8 overall this campaign. Ferris reached the national championships by winning last weekend's (May 6-7) Great Lakes Regional title in Big Rapids.

FSU will face Rollins (Fla.) on Thursday (May 13) in elite eight action at Sanlando Park. The national championships are co-hosted by the Central Florida Sports Commission, Rollins College and the Sunshine State Conference.

May 7: Ferris Wins Great Lakes Regional Championship

Tournament host Ferris State swept the doubles round and took two singles flights to register a 5-0 win over rival Wayne State Friday (May 7) in the championship match of the 2004 NCAA Division II Great Lakes Region First and Second Round Men's Tennis Tournament held at FSU's Racquet and Fitness Center in Big Rapids, Mich.

The Bulldogs, who are ranked 28th in the current (April 29) Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division II National Poll, will now advance into the 16-team single elimination national championship field slated for May 12-15 at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla.

Ferris, which is making its seventh straight and 10th all-time NCAA-II National Tournament bid, defeated the Warriors in the regional finals for the third consecutive season and gave the Bulldogs their fifth regional title in a row. The Bulldogs, who are currently 17-8 overall this campaign, will advance to the round of 16 for the eighth time in school history while WSU closes the season at 28-5 overall. The win was Ferris' third this season over their fellow Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) opponent.

FSU will face an East Region opponent to be determined in the NCAA-II Sweet Sixteen on May 12th. The national championships will be co-hosted by the Central Florida Sports Commission, Rollins College and the Sunshine State Conference.

May 6: FSU Beats Mercyhurst To Reach Regional Finals

The Ferris State men's tennis team advanced to the regional finals with a 5-0 win over Mercyhurst Thursday (May 6) in the 2004 NCAA Division II Great Lakes Region First and Second Round Men's Tennis Tournament held at FSU's Racquet and Fitness Center in Big Rapids, Mich.

The 28th-ranked Bulldogs claimed all three doubles flights and won both the numbers one and six singles spots against the Lakers. FSU improved to 16-8 overall this campaign while MC concluded its season with an 11-7 overall mark. The Lakers were making only their second NCAA-II Tournament appearance.

Ferris State, which is midst its 10th NCAA Division II Tournament bid, will face Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) rival Wayne State on Friday (May 7) at 10 a.m. (EDT). The Bulldogs have edged the Warriors in the regional finals each of the last two seasons to date.

April 27: FSU Edges Kalamazoo In Regular-Season Finale

The Ferris State University men's tennis team defeated Kalamazoo 8-1 Tuesday (April 27) in its 2003-04 regular-season finale at FSU's Racquet and Fitness Center in Big Rapids, Mich.

The Bulldogs, who improved to 15-8 overall this campaign, won two of three doubles flights and swept the six singles matches. The Hornets fell to 16-9 overall in the non-league match, which was a late addition to the schedule.

Ferris State is expected to receive an NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional Tournament bid when the official announcement is made later this week.

April 17: Bulldogs Fall In GLIAC Tournament Championship Match

For the fifth consecutive season, Northwood was able to defeat the Ferris State University men's tennis team in the championship match of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament as the Timberwolves recorded a 5-1 win over FSU Saturday (April 17) at the Midland Community Tennis Center in Midland, Mich.

The second-seeded Bulldogs, who fell to 14-8 overall this campaign, were swept in the doubles round and won only one of three completed singles matches. Top-seeded Northwood improved to 15-5 overall this campaign with the victory. FSU defeated seventh-seeded Michigan Tech and third-seeded Wayne State by scores of 5-0 and 5-1, respectively, on Friday (April 16) to reach the championship match.

Ferris, which had won seven consecutive matches to date this season prior to Saturday's loss, has been edged by NU in the GLIAC Tournament finals five consecutive seasons (2000-04) to date since the Bulldogs claimed their last league crown in 1999.

Northwood, which is ranked 21st in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division II national poll, reached the finals by registering 5-0 wins over Findlay and Lake Superior State on Friday. NU holds the top spot in the current Great Lakes Regional rankings while Ferris is second. The Bulldogs are the nation's 27th-ranked team.

April 14: Ferris To Open GLIAC Tournament Play Against Michigan Tech

The Ferris State men's tennis team will open play in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament versus Michigan Tech Friday (April 16) at the Midland (Mich.) Community Tennis Center.

The Bulldogs, who are seeded second in the draw, are presently 12-7 overall and 6-1 in league action. MTU, which is seeded seventh, holds a current 3-13 overall record and was 1-6 in league regular-season action. Ferris has won five consecutive matches to date, including a 9-0 triumph over the Huskies last Friday (April 9) at FSU's Racquet and Fitness Center in Big Rapids, Mich.

The Bulldogs would face either third-seeded Wayne State or sixth-seeded Mercyhurst in Friday's second round by defeating MTU. Round two matches are set to begin at 1 p.m. (EDT) with the final matches Saturday (April 17) at 9 a.m. (EDT).

Ferris State won two of three doubles flights and swept the six singles matches en route to an 8-1 triumph over Lake Superior State Saturday (April 10) in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) men's tennis action at FSU's Racquet and Fitness Center in Big Rapids, Mich.

The Bulldogs, who are ranked 27th in the latest (April 7) Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division II National Poll and second in the current Great Lakes Regional Rankings, improved to 12-7 overall and 6-1 in league play with the win. LSSU fell to 12-4 and 3-4 in the GLIAC. The Lakers were listed sixth in the most recent (April 7) regional poll.

Ferris won all six singles flights in straight sets. The victory was FSU's fifth consecutive this campaign and gave the Bulldogs a win in five of their six regular-season home matches to date this season.

The match was the final tuneup for both squads, who will now participate in the GLIAC Tournament Friday and Saturday, April 16-17, at the Midland (Mich.) Community Tennis Center.

April 3: Ferris Defeats Findlay In League Road Match

The Ferris State men's tennis team defeated Findlay 9-0 Saturday (April 3) in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) road match at Findlay, Ohio.

FSU, which is ranked 27th nationally, improved to 9-7 overall this campaign and 3-1 in league action. The Oilers dropped to 2-10 overall and 0-2 in GLIAC play.

Ferris State continues its weekend league road trip by visiting Mercyhurst Sunday (April 4) for a 10 a.m. (EDT) encounter in Erie, Pa.

March 26: Ferris Wins Key Great Lakes Regional Battle

Ferris State won two of three doubles flights and then posted victories in four singles matches to record a 6-3 win over Wayne State in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) men's tennis action Friday (March 26) at FSU's Racquet & Fitness Center in Big Rapids, Mich.

FSU, which is ranked 26th nationally, improved to 8-7 overall this campaign and 2-1 in league action. The 35th-ranked Warriors fell to 20-2 overall and 0-1 in GLIAC play.

The contest was also an important Great Lakes Regional tilt as FSU is currently ranked second and WSU third in the region.

Ferris State will visit Findlay Saturday, April 3, for a 1 p.m. (EST) league encounter at Findlay, Ohio.

March 23: Northwood Edges FSU In GLIAC Battle

Northwood won five of six singles flights and two of three doubles encounters en route to a 7-2 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) men's tennis triumph over host Ferris State Tuesday (March 23) at FSU's Racquet and Fitness Center in Big Rapids, Mich.

The Timberwolves, who improved to 6-2 overall and 1-0 in the GLIAC this campaign, are ranked 15th in the current Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division II National Rankings. FSU, which is ranked 26th nationally, fell to 7-7 overall this campaign and 1-1 in league action.

The contest was also a battle of the Great Lakes Region's top two teams as NU is presently first and FSU is listed second in the regional poll. Ferris junior Jason Cole managed to win the number two singles flight with a 7-6 (4), 7-6 (1) win over Florian Backnick while the Bulldog tandem of senior Francisco Valencia and junior Martin Hoch recorded an 8-6 win in number two doubles play.

Ferris State will host Wayne State this Friday (March 26) in a 3 p.m. (EST) home league tilt. The Warriors are currently 20-1 overall this campaign and ranked third in the region.

Ferris improved to 5-1 overall with the victory. The Bulldogs are ranked 26th in the latest (Feb. 25) Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division II National Rankings.

Ferris State swept the doubles round and captured the bottom four singles flights to record a 7-2 victory over NCAA Division I member Illinois-Chicago Sunday (Feb. 22) in a neutral site non-leauge match at the Laurel Hills Tennis Club in Toledo, Ohio.

"We'll take a a win against a tough Division I team," said FSU's second-year head coach Kevin Brandalik. "I'm glad we didn't have a letdown after yesterday's (Saturday) heartbreaking loss to Toledo."

Feb. 21: Ferris Drops Narrow Decision At NCAA Division I Toledo

Despite winning three of six singles matches, the Ferris State men's tennis team suffered its first loss of the 2003-04 campaign Saturday (Feb. 21) as the Bulldogs dropped a 4-3 non-conference decision to NCAA Division I member Toledo at the Laurel Hills Tennis Club in Toledo, Ohio.

Juniors Jason Cole and Francisco Gomez along with sophomore Mark Hammelman registered singles victories for Ferris State. However, the Rockets claimed the numbers one, two and four singles spots in addition to two of the three doubles matches. Per NCAA Division I rules, the three doubles flights counted as a single point in the team score.

The Bulldogs fell to 2-1 overall with the loss while Toledo, which is a Mid-American Conference (MAC) member, improved to 5-5 overall this campaign.

Ferris is slated to face Illinois-Chicago this Sunday (Feb. 22) in a 10 a.m. (EST) neutral site match at Toledo.

Ferris State won all six singles-flights in straight-sets and swept the doubles round en route to a 9-0 shutout of Kalamazoo Valley Community College in men's tennis exhibition action Friday (Feb. 20) at FSU's Racquet and Fitness Center in Big Rapids, Mich.

Senior Francisco Valencia posted a 6-3, 6-1 triumph over KVCC's Nicholas Brenner in number one singles action. Juniors Martin Hoch, Jason Cole, Kyle Halberg and Francisco Gomez along with sophomore Mark Hammelman also registered singles victories.

"It was good preparation for two tough non-league matches against NCAA Division I competition this weekend," said FSU's second-year head coach Kevin Brandalik.
