Ferris State men's tennis players Jan Talian and Martin Krbec both advanced to the ITA National Tennis Tournament by winning key matches at the 2000 ITA Men's Tennis Mid-American Regional at the Indianapolis Tennis Center.
Talian, a native of the Czech Republic, captured the men's singles title with a 6-3, 6-4 decision over Oskars Vaskis of Northwood. Talian defeated Marcus Kaempfer of Northwood 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 to advance to the championship round. Vaskis beat Krbec 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 in the semifinal round.
In the doubles portion of the meet, Talian and Krbec teamed up to defeat Vaskis and Matiss Kalans of Northwood in the championship round. After losing the first set 0-6, the Ferris State duo rallied to win the final two sets 6-4, 6-3. Talian and Krbec have advanced to the ITA National Tournament for two consecutive years.
In 1999, Talian and Krbec won the national doubles championship at the Rolex "Super Bowl" of Small College Tennis in Memphis, Tenn. This year's ITA National Tournament was held in Memphis on Oct. 18-22, 2000. Both Krbec and Talian are from the Czech Republic and are first-team members of the All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference squad.
The Bulldogs concluded their season with an opening round 5-2 loss to Florida Southern at the NCAA Division II National Championships (May 11). Ferris State's two victories occurred in doubles play at the No. 1 and No. 2 flights. The No. 1 doubles team of freshman Jan Talian and junior Martin Krbec are currently the top-ranked doubles team in the nation and finished the season with a 42-4 record.
The Bulldogs have won 19 of their last 22 matches, including a 13-match winning streak that was finally snapped with a 5-1 loss to top-ranked Ouachita Baptist (Ark.) at the Central Oklahoma Broncho Invitational. Freshman Jan Talian and junior Martin Krbec have combined for a team-leading 36-4 record this season at No. 1 doubles.
The Bulldogs are ranked third in the April 7 NCAA Division II Midwest Region rankings. Individually, freshman Jan Talian is rated as the top Division II singles player in the Midwest, while junior Martin Krbec and junior Anthony Kountouris are ranked sixth and 25th, respectively. Krbec and Talian are listed first in the region's doubles rankings while Kountouris and junior Robbie Todd are ranked 10th. Ferris has won 15 of its last 16 matches, including a current nine-match winning streak. The Bulldogs are 49-5 overall (.907) at the top two singles flights and 78-23 overall (.722) at number three through six singles.
The Bulldogs have won 10 of their last 11 matches, including a four-match winning streak. Ferris is currently undefeated at home (5-0) and is 58-4 in home matches dating back to the 1992 season. The Bulldogs have three remaining home matches (April 8-9-10) on their 2000 schedule. Freshman Jan Talian has registered a 19-3 record at No. 1 singles and has teamed with junior Martin Krbec to post a 25-4 record at No. 1 doubles.
The Bulldogs have won eight of their last nine matches, despite having their six-match winning streak halted with a 5-4 conference loss at Northwood on March 16. FSU is currently 85-28 in singles competition and 48-14 in doubles. Junior Martin Krbec has posted a team-leading 19-2 singles mark this season at the No. 2 flight. Freshman Jan Talian is 3-0 in conference match play at No. 1 singles, including a three-set tiebreaker win over Northwood's Marek Kolar, who was ranked fifth nationally by the ITA last season. Talian won 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-5).
The Bulldogs have a current six-match winning streak. Junior Martin Krbec is 15-2 at No. 2 singles this season while the No. 2 doubles team of juniors Anthony Kountouris and Robbie Todd have registered a team-best 14-1 record.
