JENNIFER GARVEY EARNS ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICA HONORS
Ferris Captain Selected As First-Team Verizon Women’s At-Large Pick
Senior Jennifer Garvey (Darnestown, Md./Quince Orchard) of the Ferris State University women’s tennis team has been named to the first-team 2002 Verizon Academic All-America College Division Women’s Spring At-Large Team, which was chosen and announced today (June 13) by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
A marketing/professional tennis management major, Garvey was among 15 first-team selections and joins Michigan Tech University women’s tennis player Lisa Graham as the only Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC)-member institution representatives. Student-athletes must have reached at least sophomore status academically, maintain a 3.2 cumulative grade point average and also be a starter or key reserve for their team to be nominated. The At-Large Team represents student-athletes from the following women’s sports: crew, gymnastics, skiing, fencing, ice hockey, swimming, water polo, field hockey, lacrosse, tennis, golf and rifle. The college division includes all National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II and III schools, all National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) member institutions and Canadian colleges and universities. Garvey, who compiled a 3.92 cumulative grade point average, previously (May 16) was named to the first-team 2002 Verizon Academic All-District IV College Division Women’s Spring At-Large Team for the second consecutive season.
Garvey, a 2001-02 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II All-America (singles and doubles) pick, led the Bulldogs to a 17-9 overall mark, including a third place 10-1 GLIAC finish and the program’s seventh consecutive NCAA regional tournament appearance during the 2001-02 campaign. She is the seventh FSU student-athlete to attain first-team Verizon Academic All-America laurels, joining John Gottschalk (baseball - 1976-78), Dan Ebright (track/cross country - 1986), Monty Brown (football - 1992), Craig Lisko (ice hockey - 1994), Jim Dube (ice hockey - 2001) and Debbie Killips (women’s basketball - 2002).
A four-time (1998-2001) first-team All-GLIAC selection, Garvey posted a team-leading 24-6 singles record this season while placing 12th overall in the final national singles rankings. The FSU captain concluded her four-year career as the school’s top all-time singles victory (99-25) leader and placed sixth in career singles winning percentage (.798). She also ranks second in doubles wins (109-30) and seventh in career doubles winning percentage (.784). Garvey, a 2000-01 ITA Scholar-Athlete honoree, finished her career ranked second among Ferris’ all-time performers in combined singles and doubles victories (208-55 – .791). She led Ferris to three consecutive (1999-2001) NCAA-II National Championship appearances and claimed the 2000 ITA Mid-American Regional Singles and Doubles Championships.
The 5-9 Garvey combined with sophomore Barbora Jilkova (Prague, Czech Republic) at number one doubles to place fifth at the 2001 ITA/National Small College Tennis Championships (Oct. 18) in Plano, Texas. The duo compiled Ferris’ third-best single-season doubles record (29-4) and the program’s top single-season doubles victory percentage (.879) during the 2001-02 campaign. They concluded the year ranked fifth nationally in the final (May 31) doubles rankings and were the Great Lakes Region’s top ranked doubles team.
The Verizon Academic All-America Teams Program honors college athletes who excel both on the playing field and in the classroom. The program, which originated in 1952, is in its 50th year of existence. Verizon, in cooperation with CoSIDA, has been the exclusive sponsor of the Verizon Academic All-America Teams Program since 1985.
