The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) recently named seniors Jennifer Garvey (Darnestown, Md./Quince Orchard) and Hulda Grin (East Grand Rapids) of the Ferris State University women’s tennis team to its 2002 Division II Scholar-Athlete All-America Team for the second consecutive year.
Garvey and Grin were among 32 student-athletes receiving recognition. They joined Lisa Graham and Gail Hansen of Michigan Tech University and Northwood University’s Helena Kotaskova and Elizabeth Neugebauer as the only Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC)-member institution representatives. Student-athletes must have reached at least junior status academically, maintain a 3.5 cumulative grade point average and also be a varsity letterwinner to be nominated. A total of seven athletes were repeat selections after being named to the 2001 ITA Division II Scholar-Athlete All-America Team.
Garvey, a 2001-02 ITA Division II All-America (both in singles and doubles) pick, led the Bulldogs to a 17-9 overall mark, which included a third-place 10-1 GLIAC finish and the program’s seventh consecutive NCAA regional tournament appearance during the 2001-02 campaign. She previously (June 13) received first-team 2002 Verizon Academic All-America College Division Women’s Spring At-Large Team accolades.
A four-time (1998-2001) first-team All-GLIAC selection, Garvey posted a team-leading 24-6 singles record this season while placing 12th overall in the final national singles rankings. The FSU captain concluded her four-year career as the school’s top all-time singles victory (99-25) leader and placed sixth in career singles winning percentage (.798). She also ranks second in doubles wins (109-30 record) and seventh in career doubles winning percentage (.784). Garvey, a four-time (1998-2001) GLIAC All-Academic honoree, finished her career second among Ferris’ all-time performers in combined singles and doubles victories (208-55 – .791). She led Ferris to three consecutive (1999-2001) NCAA-II National Championship appearances and claimed the 2000 ITA Mid-American Regional Singles and Doubles Championships.
The 5-9 Garvey combined with sophomore Barbora Jilkova (Prague, Czech Republic) at number one doubles to place fifth at the 2001 ITA/National Small College Tennis Championships (Oct. 18) in Plano, Texas. The duo compiled Ferris’ third-best single-season doubles record (29-4) and the program’s top single-season doubles victory percentage (.879) during the 2001-02 campaign. They concluded the year ranked fifth nationally in the final (May 31) ITA doubles rankings and were the Great Lakes Region’s top-ranked doubles team.
A three-time (1999-2001) GLIAC All-Academic pick, Grin compiled a 12-13 overall singles record and a 16-9 doubles mark during the 2001-02 campaign. The 5-7 Grin finished her career ranked 11th (.734; 47-17) on FSU’s career doubles victory percentage chart and attained a career 48-17 (.738) singles record. Grin tallied Ferris’ fourth-best (.849; 45-8) combined singles and doubles seasonal winning percentage as a junior in 2000-01.
