Captain Selected Academic All-District IV College Division Women’s At-Large Pick

Jennifer GarveySenior Jennifer Garvey of the Ferris State University women’s tennis team has been named to the first-team 2001-02 Verizon Academic All-District IV College Division Women’s At-Large Team, which was chosen and announced today (May 16) by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

A marketing/professional tennis management major, Garvey was among 10 first-team selections. Student-athletes must have reached at least sophomore status academically, maintain a 3.2 cumulative grade point average and also be a starter or key reserve for their team to be nominated. The District IV team is comprised of colleges and universities located in the states of Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee and Alabama. The At-Large Team represents student-athletes from the following women’s sports: crew, gymnastics, skiing, fencing, ice hockey, swimming, water polo, field hockey, lacrosse, tennis, golf and rifle.

Garvey, who was Ferris’ number one singles player this season, led the Bulldogs to a 17-9 overall mark, including a third place 10-1 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) finish and the program’s seventh consecutive regional tournament appearance. The Bulldogs, rated 25th overall in the latest (April 26) Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) NCAA Division II national rankings, were eliminated in the championship match (May 4) of the 2002 NCAA Division II Great Lakes Region Tournament by Northern Michigan (5-4) at FSU’s Racquet and Fitness Center in Big Rapids, Mich.

A four-time (1998-2001) first-team All-GLIAC pick, Garvey compiled a 99-25 career singles record and a 109-30 overall doubles mark. The FSU captain concluded her four-year career as the school’s top all-time singles victory leader and placed sixth in career singles winning percentage (.798). She also ranks second in doubles wins and seventh in career doubles winning percentage (.784). Garvey, a 2000-01 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Scholar-Athlete honoree, finished her career ranked second among Ferris’ all-time performers in combined singles and doubles victories (208-55 – .791).

The 5-9 Garvey had a team-leading 24-6 singles and 29-4 doubles record during the 2001-02 campaign. She combined with sophomore Barbora Jilkova at number one doubles to place fifth at the 2001 ITA/National Small College Tennis Fall Championships (Oct. 18) in Plano, Texas.

A season ago, Garvey earned 2000 GLIAC Player-of-the-Year accolades while compiling a 25-10 singles mark and the program’s fifth-best single-season doubles record (28-11). Garvey, the 2000 ITA Mid-American Regional Singles and Doubles Champion, led Ferris to three consecutive (1999-2001) NCAA Division II National Championship appearances during her career.
