April 25: FSU Selected To Host NCAA Regional Tennis Action
The Ferris State University men’s and women’s tennis teams have both been selected to host one of two 2002 NCAA Division II Great Lakes Region first and second round championship tournaments.
Ferris, along with Northwood University in Midland, Mich., will host Great Lakes Regional tournament action May 3-4 at FSU’s Racquet and Fitness Center in Big Rapids, Mich. The Bulldog men’s team, currently ranked 23rd overall in the latest (April 10) Intercollegiate Tennis Association NCAA Division II national rankings, will face West Virginia Wesleyan next Friday (May 3) at 9 a.m. (EDT) while the 26th-ranked FSU women’s squad will meet Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) rival Grand Valley State at 9 a.m. (EDT) in the opening round.
The other first round women’s match at Ferris pits 2001 GLIAC Tournament Champion Northern Michigan against fourth-seeded Michigan Tech at 2 p.m. (EDT) while the Wayne State men’s team will meet Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC)-member Missouri-St. Louis at 2 p.m. (EDT). The winner of each men’s and women’s first round contest will advance to next Saturday’s (May 4) regional tournament final at 9 a.m. (EDT).
Each of the following eight regions will conduct two first and second-round tournaments: East, Mid-Atlantic, Southeast, South, Great Lakes, Central, North Central and West. Sixteen men’s and women’s regional tournaments will be held with the winner of each advancing into the 16-team single-elimination national championship field slated for May 9-12 in Kansas City, Mo. The Kansas City Sports Commission and Foundation and Rockhurst University will co-host the national tournament.
The Ferris State men’s team, presently 11-5 overall, will be making its fifth consecutive and eighth overall NCAA Division II regional tournament appearance. Last season (2001), FSU defeated Incarnate Word (Tex.) in the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional final held at the University of Indianapolis in Indianapolis, Ind. The victory marked FSU’s second straight regional title and fifth overall berth in the national finals round.
The 16-8 Bulldog women’s team will be making its seventh consecutive regional tourney appearance. During the 2000-01 campaign, Ferris State claimed its third straight NCAA-II Midwest Regional championship by beating Eastern New Mexico at Washburn University in Topeka, Kan. FSU has earned three straight regional tournament titles and is making its 12th overall regional tournament bid.
April 17: Ferris Tops Rival Northwood In Spring Action
The Ferris State University women's tennis team improved to 16-8 overall with a 5-4 non-league win over Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) rival Northwood in spring action at the FSU Racquet and Fitness Center on Wednesday (April 17) in Big Rapids, Mich.
Last fall, Northwood ended FSU's 162-consecutive GLIAC dual match winning streak by posting a 6-3 victory on Oct. 12 in Midland, Mich. Prior to that match, the Bulldogs had not dropped a conference match since Sept. 4, 1984.
"This is perhaps the most satisfying victory I've had aside from winning our 17th GLIAC title in my first season here," second-year head coach Dave Ramos said. "Jennifer Garvey's win over Carina Kaempfer was perhaps the match of her career. It is so fitting that we played so well against them."
The Timberwolves were ranked 15th overall in the latest (April 10) Intercollegiate Tennis Association NCAA Division II national rankings while Ferris was 26th. Northwood also held the top spot in the last (March 27) Great Lakes Regional poll while the Bulldogs were fourth. The regional championships will be held May 3-5 at a site to be determined.

October 19: Bulldog Duo Takes Fifth at National Tourney
The Ferris State University women's tennis doubles tandem of Barbora Jilkova and Jennifer Garvey rallied for a fifth place finish after falling in the opening round of the 2001 Intercollegiate Tennis Association/National Small College Tennis Championships on Thursday (Oct. 18) at Collin County Community College in Plano, Texas.
Garvey and Jilkova, unseeded entering the tournament, lost an 8-5 decision to Nikita Bharwai and Robyn Jaeger of Grand Canyon (Ariz.). The Bulldog duo bounced back on Friday (Oct. 19) and defeated Abbie Sweitzer and Kate Opilo of Millersville (Pa.) by a score of 8-2 in the consolation semifinals. In the fifth place match, Garvey and Jilkova defeated Kristen Chumley and Lacy Johnson of Abilene Christian, 9-7.
Garvey and Jilkova were one of eight teams competing in the national tournament. They had advanced to the nationals by claiming the NCAA Division II Mid-American Regional title on Oct. 7 in Indianapolis, Ind.
The National Small College Tennis Championships is an event presented by the United States Tennis Association (USTA) and features the top players in the nation from NCAA Divisions II and II, NAIA and junior/community colleges battling it out to determine the top small college players in the country.
As the governing body of collegiate tennis, the ITA promotes both the athletic and academic achievements of the collegiate tennis community. The ITA, which was founded in 1956 and is based in Skillman, N.J., administers numerous regional and national championships and has a comprehensive awards program for players and coaches to honor excellence in academics, leadership and sportsmanship.
Garvey and Jilkova will lead the 17-time defending conference champion Bulldogs into the 2001 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championships slated for Oct. 26-28 in Midland, Mich.
Oct. 14, 2001: Streak Ends as Bulldogs Split Weekend Matches
The Ferris State University women's tennis squad recovered from Friday's 6-3 loss at Northwood to post a 9-0 win over Saginaw Valley State on Saturday in University Center, Mich. Against the Cardinals, FSU won all three doubles matches and swept the singles round to improve to 10-1 overall.
The 17-time defending conference champion Bulldogs had their 162-consecutive Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) dual match winning streak come to a halt on Friday in Midland as they lost for the first time in conference play since Sept. 4, 1984.
"The match with Saginaw was a difficult match to play considering that emotionally we had to recover from a very tough match on Friday," head coach Dave Ramos said. "I am so proud of the way our girls played and conducted themselves. They gave it everything they had this weekend and have nothing to hang their heads about."
In Saturday's contest, senior Jennifer Garvey, sophomore Barbora Jilkova and junior Suzanne Batten posted victories at the top three singles spots. Senior Hulda Grin, freshman Elena Blackman and sophomore Rachel Prescott won at the bottom three singles flights.
In doubles action, Garvey and Jilkova posted a win at the top flight while Batten and Grin were victorious at the No. 2 position. At the third doubles flight, Blackman and Prescott teamed up to beat Cassie Jastrzebski and Meghan LaForrest by a score of 6-3, 6-2.
On Friday against the Timberwolves, FSU won only one of three doubles matches and lost four of six matches in the singles round. Northwood improved to 10-0 overall and 9-0 in GLIAC play with the win.
Batten and Grin accounted for all three Bulldog victories in the match with Northwood. Batten beat Berenice Ferrer at the No. 3 singles spot by a score of 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. Grin won at the sixth singles flight as she toppled Sara Smith 6-7, 7-5, 6-3. In doubles play, Grin and Batten beat Ferrer and Helena Kotaskova at the No. 2 doubles spot by a score of 8-4.
Garvey and Jilkova will represent FSU in doubles action at the 2001 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Small College Tennis Championships slated for Oct. 18-21 at Collin County Community College in McKinney, Texas.

Sept. 8: Ferris Wins Two Conference Matches
The Ferris State University women's tennis team opened the 2001 campaign with a pair of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) road wins this past weekend. The Bulldogs defeated Ashland on Friday (Sept. 7) by a score of 6-0 in Ashland, Ohio. On Saturday (Sept. 8), FSU defeated Mercyhurst 9-0 at the Westwood Racquet Club in Erie, Pa.
With the two victories, FSU has now won 155 straight conference dual matches. The Bulldogs finished 22-6 a year ago and won their 17th straight GLIAC title last fall.
Against Ashland, sophomore Barbora Jilkova, junior Suzanne Batten, senior Hulda Grin, senior Kari Sederburg and newcomers Elena Blackman and Rachel Prescott all picked up singles victories.
"Our top player, Jennifer Garvey, sat out against Ashland to allow some of our other players a chance to play up in the lineup," second-year coach Dave Ramos said. "It was a good way to start our season and build confidence."
On Saturday, the Bulldogs won all six singles matches and claimed three doubles victories against Mercyhurst. In her first match of the season, Garvey defeated Kristie Rowling 6-0, 6-2. Jilkova, Batten, Grin, Sederburg and Blackman also won singles matches. In the doubles portion of the contest, Garvey and Jilkova teamed up to beat Rowling and Alison Hughes 8-3. Batten and Grin defeated Brianne Petricone and Joanna Olmstead 9-7 while Sederburg and Blackman scored an 8-0 decision against Lauren Dujanovich and Colleen Sullivan.
"Everyone looked good against Mercyhurst," Ramos said. "They had a few freshman that are good players who pushed us a bit. But, we came through in the end."
The 2-0 Bulldogs will visit Grand Valley State on Saturday (Sept. 15) at 10 a.m.
