Northern Michigan Beats Ferris In Women's Regional Final
The Northern Michigan University women's tennis team won the final four singles matches to edge Ferris State 5-4 in the championship match of the 2002 NCAA Division II Great Lakes Region First and Second Round Tournament on Saturday (May 4) morning at FSU's Racquet and Fitness Center in Big Rapids, Mich.
The Bulldogs, currently ranked 25th overall in the latest (April 26) Intercollegiate Tennis Association NCAA Division II national poll, won two of three doubles matches before the Wildcats rallied to win four of six singles flights.
Northern Michigan, which improves to 20-3 overall, will advance to the 16-team NCAA Division II National Tournament (May 9-12) in Kansas City, Mo. The Bulldogs conclude the 2001-02 season with a 17-9 overall mark.
Ferris State had captured three straight regional titles prior to Saturday's match. The Bulldogs, who were making their 12th overall regional tournament appearance, earned a berth in the final match with a 5-0 win over Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) rival Grand Valley State in Friday's (May 3) opening contest. Northern Michigan beat Michigan Tech by a score of 5-2 on Friday before posting its third win in four tries against FSU this season.
