Ferris State University junior Jenna O'Dell (Escanaba) has earned this week's Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Women's Tennis Player of the Week Award as announced Wednesday (Oct. 5) by the league office.
O'Dell won both of her singles matches at the fourth flight and teamed with Bulldog freshman Jennifer Prisner (Lansing/St. John's) to win a pair of number three doubles encounters as the Bulldogs registered GLIAC road wins at Ashland and Mercyhurst last weekend. The 5-7 O'Dell defeated AU's Lindsay Phillips 6-0, 6-0 in Friday's (Sept. 30) 9-0 Bulldog triumph and then beat MC's Jamie Sutyak 6-3, 6-2 as Ferris recorded a 9-0 win Saturday (Oct. 1) in Erie, Pa.
The 2004-05 FSU Most Improved Player Award recipient presently holds a 7-2 overall singles record and is 8-2 in doubles play to date this campaign. O'Dell, who has won four of her last five singles matches this season, currently has recorded a 5-1 mark in GLIAC singles play this year. Her three-year career record presently stands at 37-17 in singles action and 25-13 in doubles play.
Last season (2004-05), O'Dell compiled a 16-6 singles and 16-7 doubles record while helping lead FSU to the NCAA Division II Tournament for the 10th consecutive year. The squad reached the final round of 16 for the second time in four years and the sixth time overall. The Bulldogs finished the year with a 17-3 overall record and earned their fifth regional crown in the last seven seasons to date. Ferris, which was ranked as high as 18th nationally last campaign, also placed second in both the GLIAC regular-season and tournament competition during the 2004-05 season.
FSU, which is presently both 6-1 overall and in league play this season under first-year head coach Jing "Amy" Sun, will host West Michigan rival Grand Valley State Saturday, Oct. 8, in its regular-season league home finale. The match is set for a 10 a.m. (EDT) start at FSU's Racquet and Fitness Center in Big Rapids, Mich.
The GLIAC Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week Award is chosen each week by the league's member head coaches. The award began last season (9/21/04) when current FSU junior Molly Basha (Eau Claire, Wis./Regis) was chosen as the conference's first-ever weekly award winner. Bulldog junior Allison Halbert (Battle Creek/Pennfield) previously claimed the same recognition earlier (Sept. 14) this campaign.
