Ferris State University junior Allison Halbert (Battle Creek/Pennfield) has been named the season's second recipient of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Women's Tennis Player of the Week Award, which was announced Wednesday (Sept. 14) by the league office.

Halbert was unbeaten last weekend (Sept. 9-10) as the Bulldogs swept Lake Superior State and Michigan Tech by identical 9-0 scores in conference action at FSU's Racquet and Fitness Center in Big Rapids, Mich. Halbert posted two three-set wins in number three singles play as she defeated LSSU's Meghan LaMothe 7-6 (7-2), 2-6, 6-4 on Friday and then beat Sam Jang-Stewart of Michigan Tech 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 on Saturday.

The 5-7 Halbert also teamed with junior Molly Basha (Eau Claire, Wis./Regis) to register two convincing victories in number two doubles action. The duo handled LSSU's LaMothe and Megan Smith by a score of 8-1 and then recorded an 8-0 shutout over MTU's tandem of Jang-Stewart and Megan LaBoe.

A 2004 All-GLIAC Honorable Mention choice, Halbert currently holds both a 4-0 singles and doubles mark to date this campaign. Her current career marks are 33-15 in singles play and 45-14 in doubles action during her three-year Bulldog career. Halbert was also named to the GLIAC All-Academic Team during the fall 2004 campaign.

Last season (2004-05), Halbert compiled a 13-6 singles and 17-7 doubles record while helping lead FSU to the NCAA Division II Tournament for the 10th consecutive year. The squad reached the final round of 16 for the second time in four years and the sixth time overall. The Bulldogs finished the year with a 17-3 overall record and earned their fifth regional crown in the last seven seasons to date. Ferris, which was ranked as high as 18th nationally last campaign, also placed second in both the GLIAC regular-season and tournament competition during the 2004-05 season.

FSU, which is presently both 4-0 overall and in league play this season under first-year head coach Jing "Amy" Sun, will take part in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Great Lakes Championships this Friday to Sunday, Sept. 16-18, in Midland, Mich.

The GLIAC Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week Award is chosen each week by the league's member head coaches. The award began last season (Sept. 21) when Basha was chosen as the conference's first-ever weekly award winner.
