FERRIS WOMEN'S TENNIS PLAYERS RECEIVE GLIAC KUDOS
Four Players Named To All-GLIAC Teams For 2005 Season

Four Ferris State University women's tennis players received All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) recognition for the fall 2005 campaign in an announcement made today (Oct. 25) by the league office. The awards were presented in conjunction with the league's annual postseason tournament held last Friday and Saturday (Oct. 21-22) at the Midland (Mich.) Community Tennis Center.
Junior Molly Basha (Eau Claire, Wis./Regis) and sophomore Leila Salek (Croydon Surrey, United Kingdom/Riddlesdown) both claimed All-GLIAC First Team honors while junior Marissa Muchow (Green Bay, Wis./Ashwaubenon) was a second-team pick. Junior Allison Halbert (Battle Creek, Mich./Pennfield) attained honorable mention accolades.
The league’s 10 head coaches participated in the balloting process. Nine and 10 student-athletes were named to the first and second-team squads, respectively, while seven others tallied honorable mention kudos. Kristina Bogdanovic of Northwood earned the GLIAC Player of the Year Award while teammate Carolin Rosskothen was named the league's Freshman of the Year. NU head coach Zane Colestock picked up GLIAC Coach of the Year honors.
The 5-7 Basha posted a 17-4 overall singles record during the fall campaign, including an 8-1 GLIAC mark at the number one singles flight. She also claimed runner-up singles recognition at the 2005 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Great Lakes Regional Championships held Sept. 16-18 in Midland. Basha, who was 14-4 overall in doubles play this fall season, currently is 51-15 in career singles matches and 46-13 all-time in doubles competition.
Salek won 13 of her 15 singles matches this campaign and was 8-1 in league singles competition during her second collegiate season. She also emerged victorious in 15 of 18 doubles encounters. The 5-6 Salek won her final six completed singles matches this campaign to improve her overall career records to 32-3 (singles) and 37-8 (doubles).
Muchow registered overall marks of 9-3 (singles) and 15-3 (doubles) this fall. In addition, she teamed up with Salek to win the doubles division at the ITA Great Lakes Regional Championships. The duo then advanced to the ITA National Small College Championships (Oct. 13-14) where they placed fifth overall in the Division II field at Fort Myers, Fla. The 5-7 Muchow presently holds a 33-25 career singles record and a 53-23 career doubles ledger.
The 5-7 Halbert tallied 5-2 singles and 6-1 doubles records this year. Halbert, who is presently 34-17 (singles) and 47-15 (doubles) during her career, compiled four league singles triumphs in five appearances. She also recorded a 4-1 singles record in dual matches this season.
This season marks the second-straight year in which all four players have received conference laurels. Basha was a first-team pick in 2004, Salek along with Muchow were both second-team honorees a year ago and Halbert received honorable mention recognition last campaign.
Ferris State concluded the fall campaign with a 10-2 overall record under first-year head coach Jing "Amy" Sun. The Bulldogs, who have presently won 200 of their last 206 league regular-season matches, placed second overall at the 2005 GLIAC Championships for the third consecutive season after finishing regular-season action with a second place 8-1 league mark.
