May 5: Ferris' Season Ends In NCAA-II Great Lakes Regional

The Ferris State University women's tennis team dropped a 5-1 decision to nationally-ranked Drury (Mo.) in the opening round of the NCAA-II Great Lakes Regional held Friday (May 5) at DU's Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield, Mo.

The Bulldogs finished the year with a 10-6 overall mark. Drury entered the first round of the national tournament ranked 24th in the latest (April 28) Fila Division II Collegiate Tennis National Rankings.

Unranked Ferris State picked up its only win of the day in number one singles play where junior Molly Basha upset the region's third-ranked singles player in Alejandra Miranda-Sanchez by a 6-1, 6-3 count. The Panthers swept the doubles round and took two of the three completed singles flights to clinch the win.

Drury, which is one of two schools hosting seperate Great Lakes Regional action this weekend along with Northwood, improved to 21-4 overall this campaign and will square off against Grand Valley State in the regional second round Saturday (May 6) at 11 a.m. (EDT). The winner of Saturday's match advances to the NCAA-II Sweet Sixteen May 10-13 in Kansas City, Mo.

March 26: FSU Falls To LSSU In Non-League Spring Match

The Ferris State women's tennis team dropped a 5-4 non-conference spring decision to visiting Lake Superior State Sunday (March 26) in FSU's Racquet and Fitness Center in Big Rapids, Mich.

The Bulldogs, who fell to 10-5 overall this season, are currently ranked 26th in the Fila Division II Collegiate Tennis Rankings.

Ferris won two of the three doubles flights but dropped four of the six singles spots to the Lakers.

The Bulldogs played the match without the services of junior Marissa Muchow near the top of the lineup along with freshman Jennifer Prisner.

The match was FSU's final scheduled regular-season match of the spring campaign. Ferris will likely earn a berth in the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional Tournament slated for May 4-6 at a site to be determined.

March 19: FSU Drops Decision To NCAA Division I Rockets

The Ferris State University women's tennis team suffered a 5-2 setback to NCAA Division I Toledo (Ohio) on Sunday (March 19) in non-league spring play at the Shadow Valley Tennis Club in Toledo, Ohio.

The Rockets improved to 9-3 overall this season with the victory as they captured four of the six singles flights and swept the doubles round. UT claimed both the sixth singles spot and number three doubles by default. Ferris dropped to 10-4 overall this campaign with the setback.

The doubles round counted as a single point in the final team score per NCAA Division I regulations.

Ferris State will host Lake Superior State in a non-conference match Sunday, March 26, in FSU's Racquet and Fitness Center at Big Rapids, Mich. The match time has not yet been determined.

March 18: NCAA Division I Falcons Post Shutout Win Over FSU

The Ferris State University women's tennis squad opened up its spring campaign with a 7-0 loss to NCAA Division I Bowling Green State Saturday (March 18) at the Shadow Valley Tennis Club in Toledo, Ohio. The match was moved to the indoor facility due to weather concerns.

The Falcons swept the singles round and captured two of the three doubles flights, which counted as a single point in the final team score per NCAA-I regulations.

Ferris dropped to 10-3 overall this season with the loss. The Bulldogs will take on NCAA-I Toledo (Ohio) Sunday (March 19) at the Shadow Valley Tennis Club.

Oct. 22: Ferris Falls To Rival Northwood In GLIAC Championship Match

The Ferris State University women's tennis team dropped a 5-0 decision to archrival Northwood in the 2005 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championship match held Saturday (Oct. 22) at the Midland (Mich.) Community Tennis Center.

The second-seeded Bulldogs, who posted a 5-0 triumph over number seven seed Michigan Tech and registered a 5-0 win over third-seeded West Michigan rival Grand Valley State to reach the title encounter Friday (Oct. 21), lost all three doubles flights and the two completed singles matches against the top-seeded Timberwolves.

The victory was NU's third-straight over FSU in the GLIAC Tournament finals. FSU, which last captured the league tournament title with a 5-2 victory over Northern Michigan in 2002, concluded the fall campaign with a 10-2 overall mark under first-year head coach Jing "Amy" Sun. Northwood improved to 12-0 overall this season with the win.

Oct. 21: Ferris Advances To GLIAC Title Match With Two Victories

The Ferris State University women's tennis team advanced to the 2005 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championship match with a pair of victories in tournament action Friday (Oct. 21) at the Midland (Mich.) Community Tennis Center.

The second-seeded Bulldogs posted a 5-0 triumph over number seven seed Michigan Tech in the morning quarterfinal round and then registered a 5-0 win over third-seeded West Michigan rival Grand Valley State to reach the title encounter. FSU will square off against top-seeded Northwood in Saturday's (Oct. 22) league final beginning at 9 a.m. (EDT).

The Bulldogs won the top five singles flights against the Huskies and then swept the doubles round along with capturing victories in numbers one and two singles play versus GVSU. The Bulldogs also defeated both teams during regular-season action this campaign.

The Timberwolves have edged Ferris State in each of the last two GLIAC Tournament finals, including a 5-4 win last season (10/23/04). FSU, which last captured the league tournament title with a 5-2 victory over Northern Michigan in 2002, previously dropped a 6-3 conference road decision to the Timberwolves earlier this campaign (Sept. 20) in Midland. NU claimed the GLIAC's regular-season crown this year with a 9-0 league mark.

FSU is presently 10-1 overall under first-year head coach Jing "Amy" Sun while Northwood holds a current 11-0 overall record this season heading into the championship match.

Oct. 20: Ferris Wins League Regular-Season Finale

The Ferris State University women's tennis team claimed a 9-0 victory Thursday (Oct. 20) over Saginaw Valley State in its Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) regular-season league finale at University Center, Mich.

The Bulldogs, who improved to both 8-1 overall and in conference action with the win, took all three doubles flights and won the six singles spots in straight-sets. SVSU fell to 2-7 overall and in the GLIAC with the loss.

Ferris State opens play in the 2005 GLIAC Women's Tennis Tournament Friday, Oct. 21, with a 9 a.m. (EDT) quarterfinal-round meeting against Michigan Tech at the Midland Community Tennis Center in Midland, Mich. FSU will enter the tournament as the second seed while MTU is seeded seventh in the draw. SVSU has also clinched a spot in the event and will be seeded eighth overall.

The winner of Friday's quarterfinal round matches will advance to the semifinals Friday afternoon beginning at 1 p.m. (EDT). The losers will then take part in consolation action. The final rounds are set for Saturday (Oct. 22) at 9 a.m. (EDT).

Oct. 16: Bulldog Players Wrap Up Play In Chicago State Windy City Invite

The Ferris State University women's tennis team wrapped up play in the Chicago State Windy City Fall Invitational Sunday (Oct. 16) at the CSU Courts and Tuley Park in Chicago, Ill.

Individual flighted singles play and doubles action was held in the three-day event which began Friday (Oct. 14). The field included a variety of teams from the NCAA Divisions I and II levels including Ferris State, South Dakota State, Wisconsin-Green Bay, Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.), Chicago University, University of Milwaukee, Evansville, Chicago State, Xavier and Eastern Illinois.

Ferris junior Molly Basha compiled a 2-1 mark in Flight A singles play and advanced to the semifinal round before falling to Kristen Clary of Xavier by a 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 score.

Bulldog junior Jenna O'Dell finished 1-2 overall in Flight B singles action for FSU. After dropping her opening match to Alice Williams of Chicago 6-1, 6-1, O'Dell claimed one of two matches in consolation action.

Freshman Ann Grant recorded a 1-1 mark in Flight C singles play. She defeated Laura Arnebeck of Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) 6-2, 7-5 and then fell to Xavier's Jeanette Feider 6-4, 5-7, 6-4.

Freshman Jennifer Prisner also competed in Flight C and came back to win the consolation bracket with an overall record of 3-1 in the event. After registering a 6-1, 6-1 triumph over Sam Drews of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in the consolation semifinals, Prisner won the consolation final by default over Jen Sondreal of South Dakota State.

In doubles action, Grant and Basha teamed up to post an 8-3 win over Prisner and O'Dell in the Flight B doubles final. The Flight B division included 10 doubles teams. Grant and Basha were 3-0 overall while Prisner and O'Dell recorded a 3-1 mark.

Ferris State will visit Saginaw Valley State Thursday, Oct. 20, for its league regular-season finale beginning at 2 p.m. (EDT) in University Center, Mich. FSU will then take part in the 2005 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament Friday and Saturday, Oct. 21-22, in Midland, Mich. Match times have not yet been determined.


Oct. 14: Ferris Doubles Tandem Takes Fifth Place In ITA National Event

The Ferris State University women's tennis doubles tandem of junior Marissa Muchow (Green Bay, Wis./Ashwaubenon) and sophomore Leila Salek (Croydon Surrey, United Kingdom/Riddlesdown) took fifth place overall in the Division II field at the 2005 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Small College Championships with a pair of wins Friday (Oct. 14) at Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers, Fla.

Muchow and Salek, who advanced to the ITA National Small College Championships with a victory in the final match of the ITA Great Lakes Region Championships (Sept. 16-18) at the Midland (Mich.) Community Tennis Center, dropped a 6-1, 6-3 decision to the second-seeded tandem of Julia Ustyuzhanina and Tetyana Bula of Brigham Young-Hawaii in Thursday's (Oct. 13) opening quarterfinal-round Division II doubles match.

They then bounced back, however, to win two matches Friday. The duo beat Gena Lindsay and Erica Ramirez of Northwest Missouri State 4-6, 7-6 (5), 10-5 in consolation action and then recorded a 6-3, 6-2 triumph over Holly Lindloff and Lana Pavlin of Abilene Christian (Texas) in the fifth-place match to wrap up play in the event.

This is the second straight year the national championships have been held at FGCU. The event, which is presented by the United States Tennis Association (USTA) and administered by the ITA, dates back to 1986 and determines national champions for NCAA Divisions II and III, NAIA and Junior/Community College men's and women's singles and doubles during the first two-and-a-half days of play. Those champions then compete to become the overall national small college champs (for all divisions) Saturday and Sunday (Oct. 15-16) in the ITA "Super Bowl" of Small College Tennis.

Each small college division featured eight singles players and eight doubles teams who earned spots into this national event by winning their respective Wilson/ITA Regional Championships held over the past three weeks throughout the country. All told, nearly 5,000 players competed in 59 regional tournaments to earn spots in the national event. The tournament is the only national championship event for individual singles and doubles play at the NCAA Division II along with NAIA levels, and the only tournament that combines all levels of Junior/Community Colleges (NJCAA Divisions I, II and III and the California schools).

The overall ITA "Super Bowl" of Small College Tennis champions on Oct. 16 will earn wild cards into the Nov. 3-6 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, hosted by the The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. This tournament is the second of three national championships for Division I tennis and offers the small college participants the opportunity to become champions for all divisions of collegiate tennis.

The Ferris State University women's tennis team registered a 6-3 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) win over West Michigan rival Grand Valley State Saturday (Oct. 8) in its regular-season league home finale at FSU's Racquet and Fitness Center in Big Rapids, Mich.

The Bulldogs, who improved to both 7-1 overall and in league play with the win, took four of the six singles flights and claimed the top two doubles spots en route to the victory.

Grand Valley State dropped to 8-2 overall and 6-2 in the GLIAC with the loss.

Ferris State will take part in the Chicago State Windy City Fall Invitational Friday-Sunday, Oct. 14-16, in Chicago, Ill.

Oct. 1: Ferris Wins Conference Road Match At Mercyhurst

Ferris State won the six singles flights in straight-sets and swept the doubles round to defeat Mercyhurst 9-0 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) women's tennis action Saturday (Oct. 1) at Erie, Pa.

The Bulldogs improved to both 6-1 overall and in league play with the convincing win while the Lakers fell to 5-4 overall and 3-4 in GLIAC action with the setback.

The win was FSU's second consecutive triumph of the weekend as the Bulldogs previously posted a 9-0 victory Friday (Sept. 30) at Ashland.

Ferris State will host Grand Valley State Saturday, Oct. 8, with match time set for 10 a.m. (EDT) at the FSU Racquet and Fitness Center in Big Rapids, Mich.

Sept. 30: Bulldogs Claim League Road Victory At Ashland

The Ferris State University women's tennis team swept Ashland 9-0 Friday (Sept. 30) in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) action in Ashland, Ohio.

The Bulldogs improved to both 5-1 overall and in league play this season with the victory while AU dropped to 3-6 overall and 0-6 in the GLIAC with the loss.

FSU won all six singles flights in straight-sets while the closest doubles score in the match was 8-4 at the number two flight. Ferris won both numbers one and three doubles action by scores of 8-0.

Ferris State continues its weekend league road trip by visiting Mercyhurst Saturday (Oct. 1) for a 10 a.m. (EDT) GLIAC outing at Erie, Pa.

Sept. 25: Four Bulldog Players Take Part In Bowling Green State Invitational

Four members of the Ferris State University women's tennis team took part in the Bowling Green State Invitational held Saturday and Sunday (Sept. 24-25) at BGSU's Keefe Courts in Bowling Green, Ohio.

No team scores were kept in the two-day, seven-team tournament which featured seven singles and three doubles flights.

In additon to the Bulldogs, the tourney field included players from host BGSU, Buffalo, Toledo, Wright State, Xavier and Youngstown State. The Bulldogs were the only non-NCAA Division I school in the field.

FSU junior Molly Basha competed in the number one singles flight and reached Sunday's (Sept. 25) fifth-place match, which did not finish. Basha posted an overall record of 1-1 in the event.

Ferris junior Jenna O'Dell advanced to the championship match of the fourth singles flight where she fell to Buffalo's Natalie Dean 6-1, 6-2. Overall, O'Dell compiled a 2-1 singles record.

Freshman Ann Grant participated in the fifth singles flight and was 1-1 overall in the tournament.

Finally, freshman Jennifer Prisner competed in number six singles action where she also reached the championship match before falling to Alicia Papa of Xavier 6-2, 7-5 in the finals. Prisner was 2-1 overall.

In doubles action, Basha and Grant teamed up to finish fourth in the number two flight as they registered a 1-2 mark. O'Dell and Prisner also placed fourth at the number three flight by virtue of their 1-2 overall record.

Ferris State will visit Ashland Friday, Sept. 30, for a 3:30 p.m. (EDT) Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) encounter in Ashland, Ohio.

Sept. 20: Bulldogs Suffer First Loss Of Season Versus Archrival Northwood

The Ferris State University women's tennis team suffered its first loss of the 2005 campaign Tuesday (Sept. 20) as the Bulldogs dropped a 6-3 decision to archrival Northwood in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play at Midland, Mich.

The Bulldogs fell to both 4-1 overall and in league play this campaign while NU improved to 4-0 overall and in conference action with the victory at the Gerstacker Tennis Courts.

Ferris jumped out to an early 2-1 advantage following the doubles portion of the contest as FSU claimed wins in numbers two and three doubles play.

NU's lone doubles win came at the top flight as Julia Goncalves and Carolin Rosskothen beat Ferris junior Marissa Muchow and sophomore Leila Salek by an 8-6 score.

NU responded from the doubles round by winning five of the six singles flights to notch the victory. The loss was the first for first-year FSU head coach Jing "Amy" Sun.

Ferris junior Molly Basha claimed a 6-0, 7-5 triumph to avenge an earlier loss to NU's Sue Rossano in number one singles action. Rossano previously had defeated Basha to win the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Great Lakes Singles title Sunday (Sept. 18) with a three-set victory in the championship match at Midland.

However, in the bottom five singles flights, the Timberwolves won four in straight-sets and another by retirement as FSU junior Allison Halbert suffered an injury in number four singles play and couldn't finish the match.

Ferris State will take part in the Bowling Green State Invitational this Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 24-25, in Bowling Green, Ohio.

Sept. 18: Marissa Muchow & Leila Salek Claim ITA Regional Doubles Crown

The Ferris State University women's tennis tandem of junior Marissa Muchow and sophomore Leila Salek claimed the doubles title in the 2005 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Great Lakes Region Championships, which concluded Sunday (Sept. 18) at the Midland Community Tennis Center in Midland, Mich.

Muchow and Salek, who were seeded first overall in the draw, defeated Drury's (Mo.) sixth-seeded duo of Maria Amato and Alejandra Miranda-Sanchez by a score of 8-5 in Sunday's title encounter. They previously had posted an 8-5 triumph over Michigan Tech's Silvia Oliveros and Amy Palmgren, who were seeded seventh, in the semifinal round.

By virtue of their regional championship, Muchow and Salek will now advance to the 2005 ITA National Small College Championships slated to be held Oct. 13-16 in Fort Myers, Fla.

In singles action, both Salek and junior Molly Basha reached the semifinals at the regional tournament. Salek, seeded fourth in the draw, fell to second-seeded Sue Rossano of Northwood 5-7, 6-0, 10-5 in the final four round.

Top-seeded Basha reached the regional championship match in singles play by beating sixth-seeded Miranda-Sanchez 1-6, 7-5, 10-7 in the semifinals. In the title match, however, Rossano posted a 6-4, 6-7 (6), 10-4 win to claim the regional crown.

The ITA event included both singles and doubles competition. Participants from all schools in the Great Lakes Region were included in the field. The event was hosted by Northwood University.

Ferris State, which is presently both 4-0 overall and in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) dual action this campaign under first-year head coach Jing "Amy" Sun, will visit rival Northwood Tuesday, Sept. 20, for a 2 p.m. (EDT) league match in Midland.

Sept. 17: Molly Basha & Leila Salek Advance Into Regional Singles Semifinals

Ferris State University junior Molly Basha and sophomore Leila Salek both remain alive in singles play at the 2005 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Great Lakes Women's Tennis Championships after Saturday's (Sept. 17) second day of action at the Midland Community Tennis Center in Midland, Mich.

Basha, who is seeded first in the regional draw, will now square off against 13th-seeded Alejandra Miranda-Sanchez of Drury (Mo.) in the semifinals Sunday. Fourth-seeded Salek will meet second-seeded Sue Rossano of Northwood in the semifinals. The finals are slated for later Sunday.

In doubles action, the tandem of Salek and junior Marissa Muchow remained alive late Saturday afternoon. Results from Saturday evening's doubles play are not yet available. The doubles final is set for Sunday afternoon.

The ITA event includes both singles and doubles competition. Participants from all schools in the Great Lakes Region are included in the field. The event is being hosted by Northwood University.

The individual singles and doubles champions will be crowned on Sunday. They will then advance to the ITA National Small College Championships slated to be held Oct. 13-16 in Fort Myers, Fla.

Sept. 16: Two Bulldog Players Advance Into Third Round On Day One

The Ferris State University women's tennis team took part in first day action Friday (Sept. 16) at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Great Lakes Championships, which were held in the Midland Community Tennis Center at Midland, Mich.

Junior Molly Basha and sophomore Leila Salek both advanced into the third round of singles play as rain shortened the first-day portion of the three day competition.

Basha, who is the top-seeded singles player in the draw, recorded a 6-2, 6-3 win over Lindsay Grimmer of Grand Valley State in round two after earning a bye in the initial round.

Fourth-seeded Salek topped Michigan Tech's Samantha Jang-Stewart 6-3, 6-4 in the second round. She also received a bye in round one.

Freshman Ann Grant also remains alive in singles play as she defeated Megan Blosser of Drury (Mo.) 3-6, 6-4, 10-7 in the first round. She was slated to face Silvia Oliveros of Michigan Tech in the second round.

FSU junior Allison Halbert beat Allison Haener of Indianapolis 6-1, 6-2 in the first round before falling to 12th-ranked Natalie Paparella of Mercyhurst 7-5, 6-1 in the second round of action.

Junior Marissa Muchow claimed a 6-1, 7-6 (1) victory over Wayne State's Dee Mays in the opening round, but lost to second-seeded Sue Rossano of Northwood 6-1, 6-1 in round number two.

Freshman Jennifer Prisner dropped her opening round match to 11th-seeded Celina Grandin of Lake Superior State by a 6-1, 6-4 count.

Second round singles action and the opening round of doubles play was slated for late Friday evening with additional action resuming Saturday.

The ITA event includes both singles and doubles competition. Participants from all schools in the Great Lakes Region are included in the field. The event is being hosted by Northwood University.

Sept. 10: Ferris Closes Homestand With Another Victory

The Ferris State University women's tennis team concluded its season-opening four-match homestand with another victory Saturday (Sept. 10) as the Bulldogs defeated Michigan Tech 9-0 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play at FSU's Racquet and Fitness Center in Big Rapids, Mich.

The Bulldogs improved to 4-0 overall with its fourth-straight league win in the homestand. MTU dropped to 1-3 both overall and in GLIAC action with the loss.

Ferris won five of the six singles matches in straight-sets and swept through the doubles round in convincing fashion. The Bulldogs concluded the homestand by winning three of the four outings in shutout (9-0) fashion.

FSU will take part in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Great Lakes Championships next Friday to Sunday, Sept. 16-18, in Midland, Mich.

The Ferris State University women's tennis team rolled past Lake Superior State in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) action Friday (Sept. 9) with a 9-0 shutout over the Lakers at FSU's Racquet and Fitness Center in Big Rapids, Mich.

The Bulldogs improved to 3-0 both overall and in league play this season while LSSU dropped to 2-1 overall with the loss. FSU won five of the six singles flights in straight-sets and took all three doubles matches en route to the victory under first-year head coach Jing "Amy" Sun.

Juniors Molly Basha, Marissa Muchow and Allison Halbert, sophomore Leila Salek along with freshmen Ann Grant and Jennifer Prisner all picked up wins in singles play for the Bulldogs.

Ferris State concludes its season-opening four-match homestand against Michigan Tech Saturday, Sept. 10, with match time set for 10 a.m. (EDT) at FSU's Racquet and Fitness Center.

The Ferris State University women's tennis team improved to 2-0 overall this season with an 8-1 win over Wayne State in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) action Saturday (Sept. 3) at the FSU Racquet and Fitness Center in Big Rapids, Mich.

The Bulldogs, who previously defeated Findlay by a score of 9-0 in Friday's (Sept. 2) season opener at home, swept the Warriors in the doubles round and captured five of the six singles flights to notch the victory.

All five of Ferris' singles wins came in straight-sets while the closest doubles score was 8-2 at the number two flight.

WSU's only win came in number three singles play where Amanda Pressotto beat Bulldog junior Marissa Muchow 6-3, 6-2.

Ferris State will host GLIAC opponent Lake Superior State Friday, Sept. 9, beginning at 3 p.m. (EDT) in FSU's Racquet & Fitness Center.

The Ferris State University women's tennis team defeated Findlay by a score of 9-0 in its 2005 season opener held Friday (Sept. 2) at FSU's Racquet and Fitness Center in Big Rapids, Mich.

The Bulldogs won all six singles matches and the three doubles flights in the debut of first-year head coach Amy Sun. The contest was a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) encounter.

Ferris won all six singles flights in straight-sets and posted convincing victories in doubles play.
