Host Ferris State Wins Great Lakes Regional Men's Tennis Crown
Tournament host Ferris State swept the doubles round and took two singles flights to register a 5-0 win over rival Wayne State Friday (May 7) in the championship match of the 2004 NCAA Division II Great Lakes Region First and Second Round Men's Tennis Tournament held at FSU's Racquet and Fitness Center in Big Rapids, Mich.
The Bulldogs, who are ranked 28th in the current (April 29) Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division II National Poll, will now advance into the 16-team single elimination national championship field slated for May 12-15 at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
Ferris, which is making its seventh straight and 10th all-time NCAA-II National Tournament bid, defeated the Warriors in the regional finals for the third consecutive season and gave the Bulldogs their fifth regional title in a row. The Bulldogs, who are currently 17-8 overall this campaign, will advance to the round of 16 for the eighth time in school history while WSU closes the season at 28-5 overall. The win was Ferris' third this season over their fellow Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) opponent.
FSU will face an East Region opponent to be determined in the NCAA-II Sweet Sixteen on May 12th. The national championships will be co-hosted by the Central Florida Sports Commission, Rollins College and the Sunshine State Conference.
