Host Ferris State Captures Great Lakes Regional Title
Tournament host Ferris State won two of three doubles flights and then captured three singles victories to beat Michigan Tech 5-1 Friday (May 7) in the championship match of the 2004 NCAA Division II Great Lakes Region First and Second Round Women's Tennis Tournament held at FSU's Racquet and Fitness Center in Big Rapids, Mich.
The Bulldogs, who are ranked 20th in the current (April 29) Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division II National Poll, will now advance into the 16-team single elimination national championship field slated for May 12-15 at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
Ferris, which is midst its ninth consecutive and 14th all-time NCAA Divison II Tournament appearance, reached the final round of 16 for the first time in three years and the fifth time overall by defeating fellow Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) member MTU for the second time this campaign. The Bulldogs improved to 17-7 overall while the Huskies concluded the year with an 11-8 overall record. The regional title was FSU's fourth in the last six seasons to date.
FSU will face an East Region opponent to be determined in the NCAA-II Sweet Sixteen on May 12th. The national championships will be co-hosted by the Central Florida Sports Commission, Rollins College and the Sunshine State Conference.
