Wayne State Beats Lake Superior State In Great Lakes Regional Play
Wayne State swept the doubles round and claimed two of four completed singles flights to defeat Lake Superior State 5-2 Thursday (May 6) in the opening round of the 2004 NCAA Division II Great Lakes Region First and Second Round Men's Tennis Tournament held at Ferris State University's Racquet and Fitness Center in Big Rapids, Mich.
The Warriors, who are ranked 31st in the latest (April 29) Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division II National Poll, beat fellow Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) member LSSU for the third time this campaign. WSU improved to 28-4 overall this campaign while the Lakers ended the year with a 13-7 record.
Wayne State is making its third-straight regional bid while Lake Superior State's appearance was the first in school history. WSU will face the winner of Thursday's second match between tournament host Ferris State and Mercyhurst on Friday (May 7) at 10 a.m. (EDT).
Friday's regional champion will earn a berth into the 16-team single elimination national championship field slated for May 12-15 at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
