Michigan Tech Advances To Great Lakes Regional Final
Michigan Tech posted a 5-4 opening-round win over Mercyhurst Thursday (May 6) to advance to the title match in the 2004 NCAA Division II Great Lakes Region First and Second Round Women's Tennis Tournament held at Ferris State University's Racquet and Fitness Center in Big Rapids, Mich.
The Huskies, who are making their second all-time NCAA-II Tournament bid, won four of six singles matches after dropping two of three doubles flights to edge the Lakers. MTU improved to 11-7 overall with the win while Mercyhurst concluded the season with a 17-6 mark and its first-ever NCAA berth. The doubles round was held outsite before rain forced the singles play indoors. Both schools are members of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC).
Michigan Tech will face the winner of Thursday's second match between tournament host Ferris State and West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference champion Shepherd (W.Va.) on Friday (May 7) at 10 a.m. (EDT).
Friday's regional champion will earn a berth into the 16-team single elimination national championship field slated for May 12-15 at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
