Four Players Named To All-GLIAC Teams For 2004 Season

Four Ferris State University women's tennis players received All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) recognition for the fall 2004 campaign in an announcement made today (Oct. 26) by the league office. The awards were presented in conjunction with the league's annual postseason tournament held Friday and Saturday (Oct. 22-23) at the Midland (Mich.) Community Tennis Center.
Sophomore Molly Basha (Eau Claire, Wis./Regis) garnered All-GLIAC First-Team honors while sophomore Marissa Muchow (Green Bay, Wis./Ashwaubenon) along with freshman Leila Salek (Croydon Surrey, United Kingdom/Riddlesdown) received second-team kudos. Sophomore Allison Halbert (Battle Creek, Mich./Pennfield) attained honorable mention accolades.
The league’s 11 head coaches participated in the balloting process. Nine student-athletes were named to both the first and second-team squads while eight others tallied honorable mention kudos.
The 5-7 Basha posted a 16-4 overall singles record during the fall campaign, including an 8-1 GLIAC mark at the number one singles flight. She also claimed runner-up singles recognition at the 2004 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Great Lakes Regional Championships held Sept. 17-19 in Midland. Basha, who was 13-5 overall in singles play this fall season, currently is 28-10 in career singles matches and 26-8 all-time in doubles competition.
Muchow registered overall marks of 7-9 (singles) and 17-4 (doubles) this fall. In addition, she teamed up with Salek to reach the doubles championship match at the ITA Great Lakes Regional Championships. The 5-7 Muchow presently holds a 23-20 career singles record and a 33-19 career doubles ledger.
Salek won 14 of her 15 singles matches this campaign and was unbeaten (8-0) in league singles competition during her initial collegiate season. She also emerged victorious in 16 of 20 doubles encounters. The 5-6 Salek won her final seven completed singles matches this campaign.
The 5-7 Halbert tallied 11-4 singles and 11-6 doubles records this year. Halbert, who is presently 27-13 (singles) and 35-13 (doubles) during her career, compiled eight league singles triumphs in nine appearances. She also recorded a 9-2 singles record in dual matches this season.
Ferris State concluded the fall campaign with an 11-2 overall record under fifth-year head coach Dave Ramos. The Bulldogs, who have presently won 192 of their last 197 league regular-season matches, placed second overall at the 2004 GLIAC Championships for the second consecutive season after finishing regular-season action with a second place 9-1 league mark.
