May 12: Bulldog Women's Tennis Falls In NCAA-II Sweet Sixteen

The Ferris State University women's tennis team suffered a 5-0 setback Thursday (May 12) morning to Valdosta State (Ga.) in the sweet sixteen round of the NCAA-II Championships held at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla. The match was originally scheduled to be played Wednesday (May 11) but was postponed due to rain.

The Bulldogs, ranked 18th in the latest (April 27) Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division II National Poll, concluded the season with a 17-3 overall record while third-ranked Valdosta State improved to 18-2 this campaign and will now face Lynn (Fla.) in Thursday afternoon's national quarterfinals.

The Blazers took all three doubles points in commanding fashion. The tenth-ranked national tandem of Eva Petschnig and Annika Biro made short work of Ferris' 25th-ranked squad of Leila Salek and Marissa Muchow by an 8-2 score. Valdosta's Anne Corten and Marina Galey won by the same score over FSU's Molly Basha and Nicole Berger at two doubles while Iris Staub and Clair McKinnon defeated the Bulldogs' Allison Halbert and Jenna O'Dell 8-1 at number three doubles.

In singles play, MiKinnon continued her quick work by defeating Berger 6-1, 6-1 at the sixth flight. Petschnig, ranked number five nationally, sealed the match for the Blazers with a 6-1, 6-2 win over 19th-ranked Basha at the top flight.

FSU's women's squad, which was midst its 10th consecutive and 15th all-time NCAA Divison II Tournament appearance, reached the final round of 16 for the second time in four years and the sixth time overall by defeating fellow Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) member Grand Valley State 5-1 last Friday (May 6) in the Great Lakes Regional finals at Big Rapids, Mich. The victory marked Ferris' fifth regional crown in the last seven seasons to date.

The national championships are being co-hosted by the Central Florida Sports Commission and the Sunshine State Conference.

May 11: Ferris' Sweet Sixteen Match Postponed Due To Rain

Ferris State's scheduled Wednesday (May 11) afternoon match versus Valdosta State (Ga.) in the NCAA Division II Women's Tennis Championships' Sweet Sixteen Round was postponed due to rain.

The match will now be held Thursday (May 12) beginning at 8 a.m. (EDT) in Altamonte Springs, Fla. The national championships, which are being held at Sanlando Park, are being co-hosted by the Central Florida Sports Commission and the Sunshine State Conference.

The Bulldog women's tennis team is ranked 18th in the current (April 27) Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division II national poll while Valdosta State is third.

FSU's women's squad, which is midst its 10th consecutive and 15th all-time NCAA Divison II Tournament appearance, reached the final round of 16 for the second time in four years and the sixth time overall by defeating fellow Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) member Grand Valley State 5-1 last Friday (May 6) in the Great Lakes Regional finals at Big Rapids, Mich. The Bulldogs improved to 17-2 overall and earned their fifth regional crown in the last seven seasons to date with the win.

Valdosta State claimed the South Region title and is presently 17-2 overall this season. The winner of the Valdosta State-Ferris women's contest will meet the winner of the Abilene Christian (Texas)-Lynn (Fla.) match in the national quarterfinals which are tentatively slated to be held Thursday afternoon.

May 6: Host Ferris State Captures Great Lakes Regional Title

Tournament host Ferris State won all three doubles flights and then captured two singles victories to beat Grand Valley State 5-1 Friday (May 6) in the championship match of the 2005 NCAA Division II Great Lakes Region First and Second Round Women's Tennis Tournament held at FSU's Racquet and Fitness Center in Big Rapids, Mich.

The Bulldogs, who are ranked 18th in the current (April 27) Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division II National Poll, will now advance into the 16-team single elimination national championship field slated for May 11-14 at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla.

Ferris, which is midst its 10th consecutive and 15th all-time NCAA Divison II Tournament appearance, reached the final round of 16 for the second time in four years and the sixth time overall by defeating fellow Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) member GVSU for the third time this campaign. The Bulldogs improved to 17-2 overall while the Lakers concluded the year with a 22-8 overall record. The regional title was FSU's fifth in the last seven seasons to date.

May 5: Host Ferris State Moves On In Great Lakes Regional Action

Ferris State won all five completed matches en route to a convincing 5-0 triumph over Wayne State on Thursday (May 5) in the 2005 NCAA Division II Great Lakes Region First and Second Round Women's Tennis Tournament held at FSU's Racquet and Fitness Center in Big Rapids, Mich.

The Bulldogs, who are ranked 18th in the current (April 27) Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division II National Poll, swept the doubles round and sealed the victory with wins in numbers one and three singles play. FSU improved to 16-2 overall this campaign while WSU finished the season at 16-8 overall. Ferris is midst its 15th NCAA Divison II Tournament appearance.

Ferris State will square off against fellow Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) member Grand Valley State on Friday (May 6) at 10 a.m. (EDT) in the regional final.

Friday's regional champion will earn a berth into the 16-team single elimination national championship field slated for May 11-14 at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla.

April 21: Ferris Tennis Teams Sweep Albion In Non-League Action

The Ferris State University men's and women's tennis teams swept Albion in non-conference action Thursday (April 21) at Albion's Dow Courts in Albion, Mich. The Bulldog men recorded an 8-1 triumph while the Ferris women's team beat the Britons by a 6-3 score in the regular-season finale for both teams.

The FSU men's team, which is ranked 34th in the latest (April 6) Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II National Poll, improved to 11-9 overall this campaign with the win while Albion dropped to 9-9 overall this campaign. Ferris swept the doubles round and won five of the six singles flights in the men's match.

The 19th-ranked Bulldog women's team also swept the doubles play and then split the six singles spots to improve to 15-2 overall this season. Albion's women's squad fell to 15-5 overall with the loss.

Ferris State, which is listed second in both the current NCAA-II Great Lakes Regional Men's and Women's Rankings, is likely to receive a berth into both the men's and women's draws for the 2005 NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional Championships slated for May 6-8 at a campus site to be determined.

April 17: Women's Tennis Defeats Indianapolis In Non-League Tilt

The Ferris State women's tennis team improved its season record to 14-2 overall with an 8-1 non-league win over Indianapolis Sunday (April 17) at the FSU Racquet and Fitness Center in Big Rapids, Mich.

The Bulldogs, who are ranked 19th in the current (April 6) Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division II National Rankings, won all three doubles flights and captured five of the six singles spots en route to the victory. Indianapolis dropped to 16-10 overall this campaign.

The match was a key regional encounter as FSU is ranked second in the NCAA-II Great Lakes Regional poll while the Greyhounds are presently third in the region.

Ferris State will visit Albion Thursday, April 21, for a 3 p.m. (EDT) non-league match in Albion, Mich.

April 7: Doubles Play Leads FSU To Key Regional Triumph

Ferris State swept the doubles round en route to a key 5-4 regional women's tennis victory over Grand Valley State Thursday (April 7) in non-league action at FSU's Racquet and Fitness Center in Big Rapids, Mich.

In addition to winning the three doubles flights, the Bulldogs also captured victories at the top two singles spots. However, the Lakers won the bottom four singles positions in the match.

Ferris State, which is ranked 19th nationally in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division II National Rankings, improved to 13-2 overall this season. GVSU dropped to 19-6 overall with the loss. The match was a late addition to the schedule for both schools.

FSU is presently ranked second in the NCAA-II Great Lakes Regional Rankings while Grand Valley State is listed fifth in the region. Ferris State continues its spring schedule by hosting Indianapolis Sunday, April 17, in a 10 a.m. (EDT) non-conference home tilt.

Feb. 22: Ferris Claims Spring Non-League Win Over Hope

The Ferris State women's tennis team opened its spring campaign with a 7-2 non-league road win indoors over Hope Tuesday (Feb. 22) at Hope's DeWitt Tennis Center in Holland, Mich.

The Bulldogs claimed the top four singles flights and swept the doubles round while improving to 12-2 overall this season.

FSU is ranked 18th nationally in the latest (Nov. 16) Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division II National Rankings and is listed second in the Great Lakes Region.

Oct. 23: FSU Falls To Rival Northwood In GLIAC Title Match

The Ferris State women's tennis team dropped a 5-4 decision to archrival Northwood in the 2004 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) championship match Saturday (Oct. 23) at the Midland (Mich.) Community Tennis Center.

The Bulldogs and Timberwolves split the three singles encounters, but NU emerged victorious in two of three doubles flights to notch the win. The second-seeded Bulldogs fell to 11-2 overall this campaign while top seeded Northwood remained unbeaten at 14-0 this season.

Ferris State reached the title match by defeating seventh-seeded Michigan Tech and third-seeded Grand Valley State in Friday's (Oct. 22) opening two rounds of play.

Last season (2003), the Bulldogs dropped a 5-2 decision to the Timberwolves in the GLIAC Tournament final. NU earlier (Sept. 21) posted a 5-4 regular-season win this campaign over Ferris State in Big Rapids, Mich. Saturday's match wraps up the fall portion of the Bulldogs' 2004-05 schedule.

The Ferris State women's tennis team advanced to the championship match of the 2004 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament with a 5-0 shutout over Grand Valley State Friday (Oct. 22) afternoon in semifinal round action at the Midland (Mich.) Community Tennis Center.

FSU claimed all three doubles matches and then won the initial two singles encounters to notch the victory. The second-seeded Bulldogs improved to 11-1 overall this campaign while third-seeded GVSU fell to 10-4 this season. Ferris posted a 5-1 win over seventh-seeded Michigan Tech in quarterfinal round play Friday morning.

The Bulldogs will face top seeded Northwood in Saturday's (Oct. 23) title match beginning at 9 a.m. (EDT).

Oct. 22: Ferris Advances To GLIAC Tournament Semifinals

The Ferris State women's tennis team advanced to the semifinal round of the 2004 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament with a 5-1 triumph over Michigan Tech Friday (Oct. 22) morning in quarterfinal round play at the Midland (Mich.) Community Tennis Center.

The Bulldogs swept the three doubles flights and then claimed the victory by winning two of the three completed singles matches. FSU, which improved to 10-1 overall this campaign, was seeded second in the draw while MTU was seventh. The Huskies fell to 5-7 overall this season with the loss.

The Bulldogs will face third-seeded Grand Valley State Friday (Oct. 22) afternoon with Saturday's (Oct. 23) final matches set to begin at 8 a.m. (EDT).

Last season (2003), the Bulldogs reached the GLIAC Tournament title match before dropping a 5-2 decision to Northwood.

The Ferris State women's tennis team posted a 6-3 victory over Grand Valley State in its Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) regular-season finale held Sunday (Oct. 10) at Allendale, Mich.

The Bulldogs claimed five of the six singles flights after previously dropping two of three doubles encounters. FSU improved to both 9-1 overall and in league play with the victory while GVSU fell to 7-3 overall and 6-3 in GLIAC action.

Both teams have clinched berths for the GLIAC Tournament, which is slated to be held Friday and Saturday, Oct. 22-23, in Midland, Mich.

The Ferris State women's tennis team defeated Mercyhurst 8-1 Saturday (Oct. 2) in its Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) regular-season home finale at FSU's Racquet and Fitness Center in Big Rapids, Mich.

The Bulldogs won all three doubles matches and captured five of the six singles flights in improving to 8-1 overall and in league play this campaign. Mercyhurst dropped to 5-3 overall and 4-3 in the GLIAC with the loss.

Oct. 1: Ferris Registers League Home Victory Over Ashland

The Ferris State women's tennis team won five of its six singles matches and swept all three doubles matches to register an 8-1 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) win over Ashland Friday (Oct. 1) at FSU's Racquet and Fitness Center in Big Rapids, Mich.

FSU, which improves to 7-1 overall and in the conference, won all of its singles matches in straight sets with the lone Eagles' victory occuring at number two singles by default. AU fell to 1-7 overall and 0-6 in league action with the loss.

Ferris hosts the Mercyhurst Lakers this Saturday (Oct. 2) in GLIAC competition at Big Rapids with a 10 a.m. (EDT) starting time scheduled.

Sept. 26: Ferris Wraps Up Action At Bowling Green State Invitational

The Ferris State women's tennis team wrapped up final day action in the Bowling Green State Invitational Sunday (Sept. 26) at Bowling Green, Ohio.

Ferris advanced one singles player and one doubles tandem into the championship match of their respective flights, but both fell in the final round. Freshman Leila Salek lost to Indiana State's Magda Faferek by default in the number four singles flight while the tandem of Salek and sophomore Marissa Muchow dropped an 8-6 decision in the top doubles flight title match to Xavier's Lauren Clary and Stephanie Bauer.

The two-day, five-team tournament was held at BGSU's Keefe Courts. No team scores were kept in the event.

In additon to the Bulldogs, the tourney field included host BGSU, Buffalo, Indiana State and Xavier. Each of the six singles and three doubles flights were divided into two groups (Brown and Orange) of three players or teams each.

Sept. 25: FSU Takes Part In Opening Day Action At BGSU Invitational

The Ferris State women's tennis team took part day one action of the Bowling Green State Invitational Saturday (Sept. 25) at Bowling Green, Ohio.

Action took place at BGSU's Keefe Courts. The two-day, five-team tourney concludes on Sunday. No team scores are kept in the event.

Sept. 21: Northwood Edges Ferris In Key GLIAC Encounter

Ferris State split six singles flights, but it wasn't enough as archrival Northwood handed FSU its first loss this campaign in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) women's tennis action Tuesday (Sept. 21) at FSU's Racquet and Fitness Center in Big Rapids, Mich.

The Bulldogs, who dropped to both 6-1 overall and in league play this season, trailed 2-1 following the doubles portion of the match. Northwood, which improved to 5-0 overall this campaign, captured victories at the top two doubles flights en route to the victory.

"Molly Basha (sophomore) played another incredible match in winning the number one singles flight and Leila Salek (freshman) won a gutsy three-setter which would have clinched the match had we closed out better in doubles," said fifth-year FSU head coach Dave Ramos.

Basha, who claimed runner-up singles honors at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Great Lakes Regional Championships in Midland last weekend (Sept. 17-19), defeated NU's Sue Rossano for the second time in three days at the number one flight by a 6-4, 6-3 score. Salek topped Julia Goncalves 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 at the number four spot although NU posted wins at numbers two and three singles.

Ferris also received victories from senior Nicole Berger at the number six singles spot and the third doubles tandem of sophomores Jenna O'Dell and Allison Halbert.

Ferris State will take part in the Bowling Green State Invitational this Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 25-26, in Bowling Green, Ohio.

Sept. 19: Ferris Players Fall In ITA Great Lakes Regional Finals

The Ferris State University women's tennis team advanced players into both the singles and doubles finals but lost both contests Sunday (Sept. 19) at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Great Lakes Regional Championships in Midland, Mich.

Sophomore Molly Basha, who was seeded sixth in the draw, reached the singles title match after posting a 6-3, 3-6, 10-6 win over second-seeded and defending regional champion Sue Rossano of Northwood. However, Basha dropped a 6-1, 6-1 decision to Lewis' (Ill.) third-seeded Yuliya Kuznets in the final match.

The Bulldogs' second-seeded duo of sophomore Marissa Muchow and freshman Leila Salek teamed up to reach the doubles championship match with two wins Saturday (Sept. 18). In the finals, Muchow and Salek lost an 8-3 contest to Kuznets and teammate Allison Schmitz, who were seeded sixth overall.

Sunday's (Sept. 19) singles and doubles winners advanced to the National Small College Championships scheduled to be held Oct. 15-17 in Fort Myers, Fla.

The Bulldogs will return to Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) action by hosting rival Northwood this Tuesday (Sept. 21) at FSU's Racquet and Fitness Center in Big Rapids, Mich. Match time is set for 2 p.m. (EDT).

Sept. 18: Bulldog Players Move On In ITA Great Lakes Regional Play

Three Ferris State University women's tennis players moved on in day two action Saturday (Sept. 18) at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Great Lakes Regional Championships in Midland, Mich.

Sophomore Molly Basha advanced to the semifinals in singles play with two wins on Saturday. She beat Hillsdale's Jessie Miller 7-5, 6-0 in round three and then defeated Ashley Liles of Indianapolis 6-3, 6-3 in the quarterfinals. Basha is slated to face second-seeded Sue Rossano of Northwood in Sunday's (Sept. 19) semifinal round.

In doubles play, the Bulldog tandem of sophomore Marissa Muchow and freshman Leila Salek advanced to Sunday's championship match with two wins Saturday. They beat Monika Malinska and Aijana Otunchieva of Michigan Tech 8-3 in the quarterfinals before topping the Northwood tandem of Rossano and Kristina Bogdanovic in the semifinals.

Muchow and sophomore Jenna O'Dell both were eliminated from the singles draw on Saturday after reaching round three. O'Dell fell to Malinska 6-0, 6-1 in the third round while Muchow dropped a 6-1, 6-0 quarterfinal round decision to Rossano. Muchow previously beat Otunchieva 6-4, 1-6, 10-8 in the third round to reach the quarterfinals in singles play.

Sunday's action begins at 9 a.m. (EDT). Both Sunday's (Sept. 19) singles and doubles winners will advance to the National Small College Championships scheduled to be held Oct. 15-17 in Fort Myers, Fla.

Sept. 17: Opening Day ITA Great Lakes Regional Results

Four Ferris State University women's tennis players remain alive after day one action Friday (Sept. 17) at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Great Lakes Regional Championships in Midland, Mich.

In singles competition, sophomores Jenna O'Dell, Marissa Muchow and Molly Basha all advanced to Saturday's (Sept. 18) third round with two victories on Friday. In addition, Muchow along with freshman Leila Salek moved into the doubles quarterfinals with a pair of opening day victories.

Sept. 11: Bulldogs Win Sixth Consecutive League Road Encounter

The Ferris State women's tennis team remained unbeaten with a 7-2 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) triumph at Lake Superior State Saturday (Sept. 11) in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.

The Bulldogs improved to both 6-0 overall and in league play with the win while LSSU dropped to 1-3 this campaign.

FSU improved to 5-0 overall this campaign while the Huskies dropped to 2-2 on the season.

MTU's lone victory came at the number two singles flight where Monika Malinska beat FSU's Marissa Muchow 6-2, 6-4.

Ferris picked up three of its five singles victories in straight-sets while the closest doubles score was a 9-7 decision at the number one flight.

The Bulldogs, who improved to 4-0 both overall and in league play, previously defeated Hillsdale by a 9-0 score Sunday morning at Hillsdale, Mich.

SVSU dropped its season opener to the Bulldogs as Ferris won five of the six singles flights in straight-sets and swept the doubles round.

The Bulldogs won all six singles flights in straight-sets with the closest score coming at the number five flight where sophomore Allison Halbert recorded a 6-2, 6-2 win over HC's Kristen Tomasic.

In doubles action, Ferris easily claimed all three flights to take the early lead. The Bulldogs improved to 3-0 overall and remained unbeaten in league play with a 3-0 mark while the Chargers fell to 0-2 both overall and in GLIAC action.

The Ferris State women's tennis team opened its 2004-05 season with a 9-0 exhibition win over Grand Rapids Community College Tuesday (Aug. 31) at FSU's Racquet and Fitness Center in Big Rapids, Mich.

The Bulldogs lost only one set in singles play and handled GRCC in doubles action as the closest score was an 8-2 decision in number three flight play.

Six different Bulldog players saw action in the victory, including freshman Leila Salek. The lineup also consisted of junior Laura Schaefer along with sophomores Molly Basha, Allison Halbert, Marissa Muchow and Jenna O'Dell.
