Jan. 4: Bulldogs Listed Among 2001 Top Academic Teams

The Ferris State University softball team has placed 10th nationally among the 2001 National Fastpitch Coaches Association's (NFCA) NCAA Division II All-Academic Teams as announced by the NFCA.

The selection of the NFCA All-Academic teams were based on cumulative grade-point averages submitted by NFCA member head coaches for the 2000-01 academic year. The NFCA honored the top 10 academic teams in six membership categories – NCAA Divisions I, II and III; NAIA; junior college and high school.

Ferris State compiled a 3.369 cumulative grade point average (GPA) and was among three Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC)-member teams to place among the top 10. The University of Findlay (Ohio) received top honors as a result of registering a 3.680 team GPA while Grand Valley State University placed third with a 3.462 team GPA. Lewis University (Ill.) finished in second place after compiling a 3.520 team GPA.

The Bulldogs concluded the 2001 campaign with a 22-23 overall record, which included a 13-7 GLIAC mark.

FSU, under sixth-year head coach Keri Becker, opens its 2002 season March 8-10 as the Bulldogs will compete in the Saint Leo (Fla.) University Tournament. Ferris takes on the University of North Florida Friday, March 8, at 6 p.m. (EST) before battling host Saint Leo with an 8 p.m. (EST) start time scheduled.
