Freshman third baseman Katie Kraai (Zeeland) of the Ferris State University softball team has been named to the 2005 NCAA Division II Softball Great Lakes Region All-Tournament Team for her performance at last weekend's (May 12-14) regional tournament held at Northern Kentucky University's Frank Ignatius Grein Field in Highland Heights, Ky.
Kraai was among 13 individuals to receive Great Lakes Region All-Tourney honors and joined two other infielders on the squad. She batted a team-leading .500 with four hits in eight at bats to go with two runs scored and three runs batted in (RBI). Kraai also had one home run and a double apiece while registering a 1.000 slugging percentage and an .813 fielding percentage with five putouts and eight assists in the Bulldogs' three contests.
Kraai's best outing was a three-for-four hit outing in the season finale against West Virginia Wesleyan (May 13), highlighted by a two-run homer in the sixth inning. She accounted for both of Ferris' runs in a 2-0 tourney-opening decision over Northwood (May 12) as a result of her second-inning RBI double and then scored the game's final run on a passed ball in the same frame.
A starter in all 49 games played in this season, Kraai hit .262 (39-149) with 10 doubles, two triples, two home runs, 17 RBIs, and 14 runs scored. She recorded a .396 slugging percentage and turned in an .895 fielding percentage with 39 putouts and 123 assists. Kraai also produced nine multiple-hit game efforts and five multi-RBI contests this spring.
Ferris State, which concluded the 2005 season at 31-20 overall, posted a 1-2 Great Lakes Region Tourney mark. The Bulldogs, under eighth-year head coach Keri Becker, made their fourth regional appearance in the program's history and the first since 1999. Ferris claimed the 2005 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament title and as a result gained a share of the overall GLIAC Championship crown with Northwood.
