2000 Softball Notes
Senior infielder Anne Bentley was named to the 2000 NFCA Third Team All-America squad. She becomes the third All-American in FSU softball history, joining Jody Gifford (1997/1999) and Pat Silye (1982). Bentley, also named first-Team All-Region, batted .302 this season with 49 hits in 51 games. She scored 28 runs while recording 10 doubles, four triples, five homers and 25 RBI.
Ferris State posted a 4-0 record last weekend to win its second straight GLIAC Tournament Championship and its first overall GLIAC title (including regular season and tournament results) since 1982. . .However, the Bulldogs were not selected for the NCAA Division II Regionals and finish their season with a final record of 33-18. . .FSU capped its 2000 season with 10 straight victories, out-scoring the opposition 51-6 and compiling an 0.55 ERA during the winning streak. . .Senior infielder Anne Bentley holds Ferris State's all-time record for career doubles with 43. . .Senior Nadine Crowl was named the GLIAC's "Pitcher of the Week" for her work in the GLIAC Tournament. . .She was 2-0 from the mound with an 0.00 ERA, pitching complete game shutouts against Gannon (1-hitter) and Saginaw Valley (3-hitter).
Senior outfielder Jaymee Kent was named GLIAC "Softball Player of the Week" for her hitting production last week. She hit for a .480 average with 12 hits, 10 runs, four RBI, four doubles, four walks and one triple over eight games. Kent has hit safely in 32 of 47 games this season while recording a team-best 14 multiple hit games. . .The Bulldogs have won eight of their last nine games after going 2-8 in their previous 10 games. . .Senior first baseman Nadine Crowl hit .478 in eight games last week with 11 hits, seven runs and 10 RBI. Sophomore pitcher Jennifer Colvin improved her record to 4-0 in the Bulldogs' 8-0 victory over Hillsdale at the GLIAC North Cluster tournament, allowing three hits and striking out a season-high seven batters. Colvin has posted a 7-0 career record to date. Senior infielder Anne Bentley is one double shy of becoming FSU's all-time career leader. Bentley, with eight doubles this season, is presently tied with Jody Gifford (1996-99) with 41 career two-baggers.
Senior outfielder Jaymee Kent has recorded a team-leading 11 multiple hit games this season, including 10 two-hit games. Kent has compiled 29 career multi-hit games. . .Senior pitcher Nadine Crowl is averaging 8.29 strikeouts per game (58 total) during her last seven appearances, including three double-digit strikeout efforts. Crowl matched her personal career best with 12 strikeouts against Grand Valley on April 19. . .Crowl accounted for the Bulldogs' lone hit in FSU's 1-0 win over Wisconsin-Parkside on April 22, a game-winning homer in the bottom half of the second inning. . .FSU is averaging 3.61 runs per game this season (141 total), but only 1.37 runs a game (11 total) during its last eight outings.
Fourth-year head coach Keri Becker recorded her 150th career coaching win at FSU with a 7-4 extra-inning victory over Wayne State on April 16. Becker, the winningest coach in FSU softball history, has compiled a 150-66 career coaching record to go along with a pair of NCAA Division II Regional titles and two NCAA Division II Championship appearances. . .Senior Kris St. Andre belted her team-high fifth home run of the season against Wayne State. St. Andre, who went without a homer in 48 games last season, has hit two homer runs in her last three games.
Senior shortstop Anne Bentley is batting .563 (9-16) over the last five games and has hit safely in eight of her last nine games. Senior left fielder Kris St. Andre is hitting .533 (8-15) in her last five games, including a pair of three-hit games against Northwood on April 1. St. Andre has totaled six RBI during the five-game span. . .Fourth-year head coach Keri Becker is two victories shy of recording her 150th career coaching win at FSU. Becker, who has already made her mark as the winningest coach in FSU softball history, has compiled a 148-64 coaching record along with two NCAA Division II Regional titles.
Senior outfielder Jaymee Kent had her nine-game hitting streak snapped after going hitless in a 2-0 loss to California (Pa.) on March 26. Kent has 12 hits in her last 28 at bats for a .429 average. . .The Bulldogs have won eight of their last 10 games. . .Junior pitcher Teresa Sutermeister improved to 3-0 on the mound after notching her second shutout of the season in the Bulldogs' 4-0 win over Northwood (March 25) at the Wayne State Warrior Invitational. Sutermeister has allowed only one run (unearned) in 21 innings pitched. . .FSU has been involved in six shutouts in its last six games, winning four and losing two.
Ferris (11-5) is ranked 17th in the March 15 National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division II Top 25 poll. The Bulldogs were eighth in NFCA's preseason poll. FSU has won eight of its last nine games, including a current five-game winning streak. The Bulldogs are averaging 5.7 runs per game in their last nine contests while the opposition has scored 2.6 runs an outing during the nine-game span.
Seven different players hit home runs for the Bulldogs on their spring trip to Texas and Florida. Senior pitcher/first baseman Nadine Crowl set a team record by hitting safely in 17 straight games. Crowl finished last season with an 11-game hit streak, then recorded a least one hit in the first six games of the 2000 season. Senior outfielder Jaymee Kent batted .536 (17-for-28) on the spring trip with six multi-hit games.
