The nationally sixth-ranked Ferris State University softball team run ruled Lake Superior State twice in Wednesday's (April 22) Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) doubleheader at the FSU Softball Field in Big Rapids, Mich. In the opener, senior Holly Bruntjens tossed a one hitter to spearhead the win while junior Rhea Flores had the big bat in game two with five RBIs and a pair of home runs.

Game One - Ferris State 8, Lake Superior State 0 (5 innings)

Senior pitcher Holly Bruntjens (Gladstone) tossed a one-hit shutout as Ferris State blanked Lake Superior State, 8-0 in the conference doubleheader opening game.

Bruntjens improved her mark to 13-5 in the circle this season as she gave up only a fourth-inning single for the Lakers' lone base hit of the game. She also walked one and struck out one batter in five innings of work.

Ferris State scored the game's first run in the bottom of the third inning as junior second baseman Amanda Harrington (St. Joseph/Stevensville-Lakeshore) stoled home.

The Bulldogs padded to their lead with three runs on as many hits in the fourth. A RBI double by senior outfielder Shannon Roney (Wheaton, Ill./Glen Ellyn Glenbard South) gave FSU a 2-0 lead and then freshman third baseman Makenzie Peterson (Big Rapids) launched her second home run of the season with a two-run blast to left field as Ferris went up 4-0.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Bulldogs would score four times as the hosts tallied four consecutive doubles. Senior first baseman Amanda Jager (Kalamazoo/Comstock), Holly Bruntjens, and Makenzi Peterson all picked up a RBI apiece with two-base hits. A LSSU throwing error represented the outing's final run.

Jager finished the game going two-of-three at the plate as did Peterson, who also totaled a team-leading three RBIs as the Bulldogs produced nine total hits.

Game Two - Ferris State 9, Lake Superior State 1 (5 innings)

Ferris State completed a sweep of Lake Superior State as the Bulldogs recorded 13 hits en route to a 9-1 decision over the Lakers in game two.

Junior designated player Rhea Flores (Dearborn Heights/Southgate Anderson) led the way at the plate as she registered a squad-leading five RBIs on three hits, which included a pair of home runs. Junior pitcher Kayle Stevenson (Holland/West Ottawa) tallied the win as she gave up four hits in running her record to 10-0 this season.

The Bulldogs wasted no time in jumping ahead on the scoreboard, generating three runs in the top of the first inning. Rhea Flores singled up the middle with the bases loaded to drive in FSU's first two runs and senior outfielder Holly Bruntjens' RBI bunt single knocked in the Bulldogs' third run of the contest.

The next three runs by Ferris State came courtesy of Flores, who belted a solo home run over the left field fence in the third and then followed up with a two-run blast to left field in the fourth as the Bulldogs built up their lead to 6-0.

Ferris State sealed the run-rule victory in the top of the fifth off three hits with the key hit being a three-run homer off the bat of sophomore shortstop Lynsay Weaver (Bay City/All Saints).

For the game, four different FSU batters posted multiple hits with Flores leading the way. Junior second baseman Amanda Harrington, Lynsay Weaver, and Holly Bruntjens all generated two hits each as the foursome combined for nine of the squad's 13 hits.

The win improves FSU's record to 32-6 overall and 18-4 in the GLIAC this season to date. The Bulldogs have presently won 11 of their last 13 encounters.
