FSU SOFTBALL BLANKS NSU TO CONTINUE WINNING WAYS
A four-run output in the top of the first inning was all the nationally eighth-ranked Ferris State softball team would need as the Bulldogs blanked Northern State (S.D.), 7-0, in Sunday's (March 8) action at the Florida Rebel Spring Tournament in Kissimmee, Fla.
The Bulldogs, who improved to 3-0 overall this spring with the win, started out the non-league tilt with back-to-back doubles by senior outfielder Sarah Mueller and junior second baseman Amanda Harrington. Senior first baseman Amanda Jager along with junior designated player Rhea Flores and junior pitcher Kayle Stevenson accounted for the other three first-inning runs on RBI singles.
A RBI groundout in the second by senior catcher Krystle Bailey scored Sarah Mueller, who lined a one-out double earlier in the frame.
The Bulldogs would tack on two more runs in the top of the seventh innings as sophomore outfielder Rachel Wade scored on a passed ball and after Amanda Harrington was hit by a pitch, Krystle Bailey smacked a double down the right field line to score Harrington.
The top three hitters in FSU's batting order, Mueller, Harrington, and Bailey all collected two hits apiece as the Bulldogs recorded nine total as a team.
In the pitching circle, Kayle Stevenson earned the victory in her first start of the season with six strikeouts and one hit allowed in the initial five innings. Rhea Flores came in to spell Stevenson and scattered one hit with two strikeouts in the game's final two innings.
