SOFTBALL ROLLS PAST CORNERSTONE IN TWINBILL SWEEP

Lynsay Weaver
Lynsay Weaver helped Ferris State sweep Cornerstone with a career-high nine RBIs in the two-game series.

The nationally sixth-ranked Ferris State University softball team produced double digits in both runs and hits en route to sweeping Cornerstone in a non-league doubleheader Thursday (March 26) at Grand Rapids, Mich. The twinbill sweep improves Ferris State's current overall record to 14-2 this spring.

Game One - Ferris State 10, Cornerstone 1 (5 innings)

Ferris State received balanced hitting and used the long ball to register a 10-1 five-inning triumph over Cornerstone in game one of a non-league doubleheader at Grand Rapids, Mich.

The Bulldogs jumped out to a 5-0 lead with a five-run third-inning output. Ferris would score twice more in the fourth frame and finished with a three-run inning in the fifth.

The Bulldogs totaled 13 hits in the contest with sophomore outfielder Rachel Wade's (Canton) three hits leading four FSU batters in multiple hits. Senior pitcher Holly Bruntjens (Gladstone) along with sophomore shortstop Lynsay Weaver (Bay City/All Saints) and junior second baseman Amanda Harrington (St. Joseph/Stevensville-Lakeshore) generated two hits each.

Holly Bruntjens (4-1) started for FSU and earned the win as she scrattered two hits and fanned five in three innings. Senior Shannon Roney (Wheaton, Ill./Glen Ellyn Glenbard South), a transfer from Loyola (Ill.), came in relief of Bruntjens and worked the final two frames. She chalked up two strikeouts while allowing two Cornerstone hits.

Game Two - Ferris State 16, Cornerstone 3 (5 innings)

A trio of Ferris State batters produced three hits apiece as Bulldogs rolled to a 16-3 five-inning decision over Cornerstone in game two of the non-league twinbill.

Ferris State took the early lead with a run in the top of the first inning on a RBI sacrifice fly by sophomore shortstop Lynsay Weaver, who finished the contest with six RBIs. The third inning was where the Bulldogs did virtually of their damage as FSU exploded for 12 runs on nine hits coupled with a CU error. A pair of grand slam home runs off the bats of Lynsay Weaver and senior first baseman Amanda Jager (Kalamazoo/Comstock) highlighted the frame. Sophomore catcher Rachel Mueller (Santa Clarita, Calif./Valencia) also drove in three runs with her first career roundtripper.

Amanda Jager, Rachel Mueller, and junior pitcher Kayle Stevenson (Holland/West Ottawa) all went three-for-three at the plate as Ferris State accumulated 14 hits as a team. Besides Weaver's six RBI performance, Jager drove in four runs while Mueller knocked in three more. Sophomore outfielder Kim Curtis (Morley/Morley-Stanwood) contributed with two hits and two runs scored.

Kayle Stevenson improved to 3-0 in the pitching circle as she fanned four batters in two hitless innings. Junior Rhea Flores (Dearborn Heights/Southgate Anderson) spelled Stevenson and threw the final three innings. She allowed the three Golden Eagles' runs to go with three walks and a strikeout.
