SOFTBALL WRAPS UP FLORIDA REBEL SPRING TOURNEY ON A HIGH NOTE
A pinch-hit triple by senior Shannon Roney (Wheaton, Ill./Glen Ellyn Glenbard South) in the seventh inning propelled the seventh-ranked Ferris State softball team to a 1-0 decision over Dowling (N.Y.) in Saturday's (March 14) final Florida Rebel Spring Tournament appearance at Kissimmee, Fla.
The non-league tilt was a defensive one as neither team was able to get on the scoreboard until the final inning when Ferris State scored the game-winning run with two outs in its last at bat. Junior pitcher Kayle Stevenson (Holland/West Ottawa) helped her cause by leading off the frame with a walk. Junior Kim Curtis (Morley/Morley-Stanwood) entered as a pinch runner for Stevenson and advanced to second base on senior outfielder Sarah Mueller's (Santa Clarita, Calif./Valencia) sacrifice bunt. Roney stepped in and proceeded drive a pitch by Dowling's Stephanie Plochochi to the right centerfield gap for a RBI triple to easily score Curtis with the decisive run.
Kayle Stevenson turned in a stellar pitching performance as she held the Golden Lions to just two base hits in seven innings. The left-handed thrower struck out a career-high 11 Dowling hitters in improving her record to 2-0 this season.
Joining Roney with a base hit in the game were Sarah Mueller and junior designated player Rhea Flores (Dearborn Heights/Southgate Anderson).
The Bulldogs concluded play at the annual tournament with an impressive 12-2 record.
