Ferris State senior pitcher Sarah Mueller (Santa Clarita, Calif./Valencia) pitched a complete-game one-hitter to help the seventh-ranked Bulldogs to a 3-0 victory over Minnesota Duluth this Friday (March 13) morning in game one of a non-conference doubleheader at the Florida Rebel Spring Tournament in Kissimmee, Fla.
The win improved Ferris State's record to an impressive 10-1 this spring with all of this season's action to date taking place in the Sunshine State.
Mueller remained perfect in the circle this season at 4-0 as she held Minnesota Duluth in check throughout the twinbill opener. Mueller matched a single-season high with 10 strikeouts and walked one UMD batter in seven innings of work. UMD's lone base hit off Mueller would come in the top of the fifth inning on a one-out double by designated player Kristin Danielson.
The game remained scoreless until Ferris State erupted for three runs on two hits in the bottom half of the fifth inning. A bases-loaded walk to senior catcher Krystle Bailey (Wyoming/Rogers) scored sophomore outfielder Rachel Wade (Canton) for the contest's first run. The other two FSU runs would come two batters later when senior first baseman Amanda Jager (Kalamazoo/Comstock) singled up the middle to score both sophomore pinch runner Kim Curtis (Morley/Morley-Stanwood) and sophomore outfielder Colleen Roney (Wheaton, Ill./Glen Ellyn Glenbard South).
Sarah Mueller, Krystle Bailey, junior designated player Rhea Flores (Dearborn Heights/Southgate Anderson), Amanda Jager, and Colleen Roney each posted a single to account for Ferris State's five hits in the outing. FSU would strand six runners on the bases while Minnesota Duluth left three on base.
