THREE-RUN SEVENTH LIFTS FSU SOFTBALL TO NINTH STRAIGHT WIN

Sarah Mueller
Sarah Mueller tied a personal career game-high with 10 strikeouts in a 3-1 win over Upper Iowa.

The nationally-ranked Ferris State softball saved its best for last as the Bulldogs scored three seventh-inning runs to register a 3-1 come-from-behind decision over Upper Iowa in this Thursday (March 12) morning's action at the Florida Rebel Spring Tournament in Kissimmee, Fla.

Ferris State, which won for the ninth straight time this 2009 season in improving its overall record to 9-0, started the rally with two outs in its last at bat. A RBI single by senior pitcher Sarah Mueller (Santa Clarita, Calif./Valencia) supplied the game-tying run after Upper Iowa scored its lone run of the game in the bottom half of the first inning. Junior second baseman Amanda Harrington (St. Joseph/Stevensville-Lakeshore) followed with an infield single for the Bulldogs' second run while the final score came as a result of a Peacocks' error in which Mueller crossed home plate as senior catcher Krystle Bailey (Wyoming/Rogers) reached base on the UIU miscue.

Ferris State would compile four base hits for the game as Sarah Mueller's two hits lead the way. Amanda Harrington and junior designated player Rhea Flores (Dearborn Heights/Southgate Anderson) both generated a single as the Bulldogs would strand seven runner on the basepaths to Upper Iowa's three.

In the circle, Mueller improved to 3-0 this spring as she threw a complete-game three hitter with a career-best tying and season-high 10 strikeouts.

The Bulldogs entered the non-league encounter ranked seventh nationally in the latest (March 11) National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division II Top 25 Poll after occupying eighth place in the previous national coaches poll.
