Rachel Wade and the Bulldogs will now open the 2009 season in Florida as a result of this weekend's tournament cancellation.

The nationally sixth-ranked Ferris State University softball team was scheduled to open its 2009 season this weekend (Feb. 28-March 1) at the Kentucky Wesleyan Challenge in Owensboro, Ky., but the season-opening tourney has been canceled due to weather.

The tournament will not be rescheduled. The Bulldogs, under 12th-year head coach Keri Becker, were scheduled to play four non-conference games in the two-day (Feb. 28-March 1) tourney against host Kentucky Wesleyan and Missouri S&T, both Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC)-member institutions.

Officials elected to cancel the tournament as a result of weather forecasts predicting a combination of rain and snow.

Ferris State will now officially start its 2009 season at the Florida Rebel Spring Tournament (March 7-14) in Kissimmee, Fla, with 14 scheduled contests in seven days of action.

FSU, which is ranked sixth nationally in the 2009 National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division II Preseason Top 25 Poll, was selected first in the 2009 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Softball Coaches Preseason Poll.
