The early-season success experienced by the 2009 Ferris State University softball team hasn't went unnoticed nationally as the Bulldogs are ranked sixth place in the most recent National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division II Top 25 Poll. The poll was released on Wednesday (March 25).
Ferris State is presently listed sixth in the poll with 283 points after occupying seventh place the previous two weeks (March 11 and 18). FSU currently sports a 12-2 overall record as all of the Bulldogs' games have occurred at the Florida Rebel Spring Tournament
The Bulldogs, coached by 12th-year head coach Keri Becker, trail fourth-place and 2008 NCAA-II National Champion Humboldt (Calif.) State by 53 points. Angelo State (Texas) is ranked number one for the fifth consecutive time to date. Alabama-Huntsville is second while North Georgia and Southeastern Oklahoma comprise the remaining top five teams at third and fourth place, respectively.
The only other Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) representative to earn national recognition is Wayne State, which is listed as other teams receiving votes.
The NFCA Division II Top 25 Poll is voted on by 16 NCAA Division II head coaches with two representing each of the eight NCAA regions.
Ferris State started off the 2009 season ranked sixth in the NFCA's preseason poll (Jan. 28). FSU then dropped to eighth place in the March 4 poll before garnering seventh-place honors in the proceeding two polls (March 11 and 18).
FSU, which visits Cornerstone this Thursday (March 26) in a non-conference doubleheader, will play its 2009 season home opener this Sunday (March 29) against archrival Grand Valley State in Big Rapids, Mich. The GLIAC season-opening twinbill will get underway at 12 p.m. (EDT) with game two to follow around 2 p.m. (EDT). Both contests will be held at the FSU Softball Field on the Ferris State campus.
