The success achieved by the 2008 Ferris State University softball team continues to be recognized as the Bulldog coaching staff has been named the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA)/NCAA Division II Great Lakes Region Coaching Staff of the Year. The announcement was made Tuesday (June 24) by the NFCA.

Head coach Keri Becker along with assistant coaches Lesa Bickley and Chad Haberland were bestowed with the honor after directing Ferris State to a 35-18 overall record this season and a NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional Tournament championship. As a result, the Bulldogs earned a berth in the 2008 NCAA-II Softball Championships (May 14-17) at Houston, Texas, and concluded the national tournament tying for fifth place. The national tourney appearance represented Ferris State's first since the 1999 season and the third ever in the program's history.

Becker, who was voted the 2008 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference's (GLIAC) Coach of the Year, and her coaching staff guided the Bulldogs to a share of the 2008 GLIAC Regular-Season Championship crown as FSU registered a school-record single-season tying 16-4 conference mark. Following the season, Ferris State placed tied for fifth in the final NFCA Division II Top 25 Rankings Poll.

Ferris State's 35 victories in the 2008 campaign represented the program's highest single-season wins total since 1999 when the Bulldogs compiled a school-record 46-18 overall record. To date, FSU has won at least 30 games in a season eight times in the program's 36-year history.

NFCA Logo Becker completed her 11th year at Ferris State this spring and is the program's all-time winningest coach with a current 348-227-1 bench mark. Previous to the 2008 season, Becker has twice (1997 and 2003) been recognized as the GLIAC Softball Coach of the Year. The Bulldogs have achieved eight winning seasons under Becker's tutelage while claiming three NCAA-II regional titles and making five NCAA-II tournament appearances.

Bickley completed her fifth season in 2008 at Ferris State while Haberland wrapped up his sixth straight year and his eighth overall as a Bulldog regular assistant.

Humboldt State (Calif.), the 2008 NCAA-II National Champions, were selected as the NFCA/NCAA Division II National Coaching Staff of the Year.
