BULLDOGS OPEN SOFTBALL REGIONALS AGAINST SAGINAW VALLEY STATE
The Ferris State University softball team will take on a familiar opponent in its opening game of the 2008 NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional Tournament this Wednesday (May 7) morning as the Bulldogs square off against fellow Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) member Saginaw Valley State at the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville's Cougar Field in Edwardsville, Ill. The first pitch is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. (CDT).
|Junior catcher Krystle Bailey and her Ferris State teammates will face Saginaw Valley State in the first game of the 2008 Great Lakes Regional Tournament, which starts this Wednesday (May 7) in Edwardsville, Ill.
Ferris State, which has compiled a current 30-16 overall record this season, is making its sixth NCAA-II Regional Tournament appearance in the program's history and the team's third NCAA-II Tourney trip in the last four years. The Bulldogs are seeded sixth in the regional while the Cardinals are the third seed.
FSU, under 11th-year head coach and 2008 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Coach of the Year Keri Becker, were 2008 GLIAC Regular-Season Co-Champions and placed third at the 2008 GLIAC Softball Championships this past weekend (May 2-4) in Midland, Mich. Saginaw Valley State is directed by first-year head coach Everett Roper and the 34-15 Cardinals are making their first regional tourney appearance since the 2000 season. SVSU earned the GLIAC's automatic bid after capturing the 2008 GLIAC Championship Tourney title for the first time since 1990.
The Bulldogs are 35-45 in their all-time series versus Saginaw Valley State, which includes a 1-2 mark in this season's meetings. The two teams split a regular-season league doubleheader at University Center, Mich., on April 6 with the Cardinals winning the opening game, 3-2, before Ferris registered a 4-3 eight-inning decision in the nightcap. SVSU bested the Bulldogs by a 10-4 score in a conference tournament contest this last Saturday (May 3) in Midland.
The winner of the FSU-SVSU game will meet the winner of the Lewis-West Virginia Wesleyan contest this Thursday (May 8) at 2:30 p.m. (CDT). The loser of the FSU-SVSU matchup will take on the loser of the Lewis-West Virginia Wesleyan game Thursday (May 8) at 9:30 a.m. (CDT) in the double-elimination tournament.
