The nationally-ranked Ferris State University softball team has been selected to finish tied for third place in the 2008 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Softball Coaches Preseason Poll, which was released Thursday (Feb. 28) by the conference office.

The Bulldogs, who are ranked 25th in the 2008 National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division II Preseason Top 25 poll, received 79 points and one first-place vote. Ferris tied Gannon, which also picked up 79 points along with two first-place votes. Wayne State, the defending 2007 GLIAC co-champion, earned four of 10 possible first-place votes and garnered 94 points. The Warriors finished five points ahead of Grand Valley State, which recorded 89 points to go with four first-place votes. Ashland rounded out the top five in the 11-team poll with a 63-point total.

Each of the GLIAC's 11 head softball coaches ranked each of the conference teams, but weren't allowed to vote for their own squad. The first-place team on each ballot received 10 points while the second-place team earned nine points, etc.

The 2008 GLIAC Softball Tournament will be conducted May 2-4 at the Emerson Park Softball Complex in Midland, Mich., for the fourth consecutive year. The top eight teams with the best regular-season conference records qualify for the double-elimination league tourney.

Ferris State was picked fifth in the 2007 league poll with 67 points after attaining a second-place 88 points with three first-place votes in the 2006 poll.
