Ferris State University softball head coach Keri Becker has announced the committments of two high school student-athletes, Brooke Lewis (Columbiaville/Lapeer) and Lynsay Weaver (Bay City/All Saints), to attend and play softball at FSU beginning with the 2007-08 academic year.

"My (coaching) staff and I are excited about this year's recruiting class," said Becker. "These two will add both speed and athletic ability to our lineup.

"I know these ladies share the vision of our program and their willingness to work hard toward helping the Bulldog softball team reach its goals for this upcoming season and in the years to come," added Becker, who will begin her 11th year at the helm in the 2008 season and is the program's all-time winningest coach.

Lewis, a 5-7 outfielder, received first-team all-region and all-distict honors as a senior at Lapeer (Mich.) High School under head coach Brad Walker. The team captain batted for a .422 average with 49 base hits in 116 at bats to go along with 25 runs scored. The All-Flint Metro League First-Team selection totaled four home runs and had 37 runs batted (RBI) in for the 2007 season.

As a junior in 2006, Lewis registered a .588 batting average en route to attaining first-team all-conference, first-team all-district, and all-region first-team accolades. The 2007 graduate was also involved in student council, peer resistance, and the OMNI Council. She has played club softball the past few summers for the Finesse Fastpitch team.

The daughter of Danny and Bernadette Lewis of Columbiaville, Mich., Brooke plans to major in finance at Ferris State.

A 5-8 catcher-infielder, Weaver earned all-state plaudits in her 2006 junior season at Bay City (Mich.) All Saints High School after helping lead head coach Brad Walraven's squad to a district championship title. She posted a .389 batting average with 25 hits, 32 runs scored, 35 RBI, and 11 stolen bases in as many attempts. Weaver, a two-time (2005 and 2006) Bay City Times Dream Team pick, also produced eight doubles, four triples, and five home runs while notching a .676 slugging percentage and a .569 on-base percentage. As a pitcher, the second-team all-conference performer went 8-3 with a 1.43 earned run average and 79 strikeouts in 68-plus innings.

Weaver was a first-team all-league honoree as a sophomore in 2005 as she batted .396 with 34 hits, which included 10 doubles, three triples, and six roundtrippers. She also tallied 19 runs and drove in 53 more while generating a .649 slugging percentage and a .497 on-base percentage. Weaver turned in a 27-7 pitching mark and had a 1.45 earned run average in 217-plus innings of work as the BCASHS captured a district title. She racked up 223 strikeouts and issued 144 walks while allowing 86 runs of which 45 were earned.

In her 2004 freshman year, Weaver claimed all-league second-team kudos by hitting .282 with 20 hits, 16 runs scored, 10 doubles, two triples, one home run, 24 RBI, and nine base thefts while guiding her team to both a conference and district championship crown. Weaver was also a member of the Bay City Blast, a summer club team which won the USSA World Series championship.

Along with softball, Weaver also competed four years apiece in both basketball and volleyball.

Lynsay, the daughter of Brian and Pahi Weaver of Bay City, is a 2007 graduate and received 11 varsity letters in her prep athletics career. She also traveled to New Orleans, La., in December 2006 to perform volunteer work following the Hurricane Katrina disaster.

The Bulldogs posted a 31-17 overall record for the 2007 season and were 14-6 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) regular-season play. Ferris State made its fifth NCAA Division II Regional Tournament appearance in the program's history this past spring and the second one in the last three years.
