FERRIS STATE WOMEN’S SOCCER SIGNS ASHLEY BREWER
Dowagiac Union High School Product Added To Bulldogs’ 2004 Recruiting Class
The Ferris State University women’s soccer program has signed defender/midfielder Ashley Brewer (Dowagiac/Union) to a national letter-of-intent to attend and play women’s soccer at FSU, beginning in the 2004-05 academic year. The announcement was made by FSU head coach Melissa Eging, who guided the Bulldogs to a school-record 11-5-1 overall mark in her first season at the helm last fall.
“Ashley is a speedy player who will bring tremendous athleticism and explosion to our team,” Eging said. “She is a determined student-athlete who I expect will develop steadily throughout her career at Ferris State.”
The 5-2 Brewer attained team Most Valuable Player Award accolades for Dowagiac Union High School as a junior during the 2003 campaign after posting five goals along with three assists in a defensive stopper role. The two-time (2002 & 2003) all-district pick also received All-Southwestern Michigan Athletic Conference kudos after previously earning honorable mention all-conference laurels as a sophomore. A three-year letterwinner, Brewer garnered team Most Valuable Defensive Player Award recognition in 2001 and 2002 under head coach Michael Williams.
The Chieftains opened the 2004 campaign by claiming the first-ever Early Bird Tournament Championship last Saturday (March 27) at home. Brewer registered two goals in DUHS’ 5-0 opening-round win over Buchanan and recorded the game-winning assist versus Edwardsburg in the title contest.
“As with the other members of our incoming class, she has played in both attacking and defensive roles,” said Eging. “Hopefully, she will be able to use her versatility to an advantage by gaining additional experience at several positions.”
Brewer, who served as the Chieftains’ team captain last year, also participated and earned two letters apiece in both basketball and volleyball. She played two seasons of club soccer for Southwest Michigan Select before competing with the TKO Club Soccer Team during the 2003 campaign.
In addition to athletics, Brewer also has been active as the Student Senate’s Vice-President and President of the Varsity Club at Dowagiac. A member of the Army National Guard, Brewer also takes part in DUHS’ mentoring program. She is the daughter of Lisa Brewer and plans to major in pre-medicine at Ferris State.
Brewer joins defender Ashley Lukes (Kokomo, Ind./Western) and midfielder Andrea Palombi (Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario/St. Mary’s College) as members of FSU’s 2004 recruiting class.
In addition to posting the program's best performance in its five-year history last fall, the Bulldogs also placed fourth in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) with a 5-3 mark. Ferris won eight of its final 11 outings last season after beginning the year with a school-record three consecutive victories. FSU, which compiled a program-best 5-2-1 road mark in 2003, posted school single-season records for most goals (40), assists (36) and points (116) during the 2003 campaign.
